Mafia and Werewolf are basically the same thing, or so I've come to understand. The number and types of roles can vary, but there's pretty much always at least two wolves and at least one town-sided power role, usually the Seer. Plenty of games on this forum have had more roles, though, and some've had neutral parties. This game can get real complicated when somebody like 'Chesser or NTC takes the reins.

EDIT: The Town of Salem thing you just linked to seems to be trying to pretend they came up with the game we've been playing here for probably a year or so. :/

It's kind of a kick starter web game that a couple people came up with. That wiki is just describing the game town of Salem. It's not like they created The entire concept of mafia. I just find the roles in their in their alignments a lot easier, probably because I've been playing the game for the past couple of weeks. But just to be clear,Has there been traditionally been 2 werewolves and one person with a gun on one side?

Generally speaking, you usually have two wolves and one Seer (who targets one person each night and is told whether or not that person's a werewolf); in this particular thread, though, there are usually as many town-aligned power roles as there are w rewolves. One of the popular ones is the Hunter, who has one nightkill they can use during the game (hopefully on a wolf).

The wiki I linked to at the bottom of the last page has a list of many, many other roles and variations on the rules.

I guess you guys don't know me, I'm new to the forums, so hi there. I used to play Mafia all the time, but it's been a while so I'm a little rusty. You'll have to explain what roles you're using and whatever. Last game looked great though, looking forward to this.

Stuff is happening now!

For the last few weeks, visitors have been coming from all over Equestria in preparation for the much-awaited marriage of Princess Notevil Goodpony and her fiancee, Sir bRaHiAn1. Hotels throughout Canterlot have been packed with ponies from all over the country, but only the extended royal family and their very close friends have been allowed access into the great Canterlot Castle. However, there are rumors that a few ponies bearing certain "Elements of Harmony" have been invited into the castle as well. Some ponies have been worried about such a large event being invaded by mythological creatures, but the royal guard has assured everypony that the castle is same from any nefarious beasts. Nonetheless, wedding preparations have been hectic and stressful, and at this point everypony is just waiting for the wedding to be over with so they can return home.

It just so happens that just a few days before this fateful wedding, the extended royal family and their very close friends found a gruesome surprise awaiting them in the throne room where the wedding was to take place. Hanging from the ceiling of the room was a massive, green, gelatinous mass, almost like a cocoon. Suspended in this goo was the lifeless body of Sir bRaHiAn1, eyes wide with fear, his mouth open wide, as if his last moments had been spent desperately gasping for air.

Needless to say, the extended royal family and their very close friends were quite distraught at this sight, but as they began to turn tail and run, the massive throne room doors were slammed shut behind them.

"Let us out!" said somepony, slamming their hoof against the door. "You can't keep us in here!"

"Yes, we can," said a voice from the other side. "This was obviously the work of a Changeling, and you were the only ponies inside the building last night when this happened. We're not letting you out until the Changelings have been eradicated, or they've eradicated you."

"Changelings," muttered another pony. "Lovely. I didn't even want to go this stupid wedding..."

"How do we know you're not a changeling?!" demanded somepony else.

"Because," said the guard, "I'm just a nameless guard who looks exactly like all the other guards. Changelings only target important people, like you guys."

"Oh yeah, that makes sense," they agreed.

"So what are we going to do?" asked some other pony. "How do we know which one of us is a Changeling?"

"It's simple," spoke Princess Notevil Goodpony. "Most of us are unicorns here, right? You can shoot lasers from your face. Those of you without horns have some pretty strong hooves, perfect for beating things. Once a changeling dies, it should revert to its true form."

There was a short silence after this.

"Isn't that a bit... brutal?" asked a different pony. "What if they turn out not to be a changeling? We'll have killed an innocent."

Princess Notevil Goodpony merely shrugged and said, "Desperate times call for desperate measures."

Most of the ponies still didn't like this idea, but nopony had any better ones. Besides, she's an immortal alicorn princess, they thought. She probably knows what she's doing.

Sir bRaHiAn1, Equestrian, has found himself in a sticky situation.

Da Rules, in case you forgot them:

• The game has two phases: Night and Day. Each one lasts ~48 hours, and each has different actions pertaining to them, which shall be explained below.
• During the Day phase, players may vote on who they wish to face-laser and/or beat to death. The person with the most votes at the end of the Day is lynched. If a certain player gets at least half of the votes, the Day ends early and they die. In the event of a tie, a certain special tiebreaker shall be performed nah nobody dies. If no one is voted for, the Princess is killed.
• During the Night phase, the Changelings decide who to target next and PM me their target. There are also certain roles that have certain special powers: These powers are activated at Night, and they shall PM me their actions. If the Night ends before someone PM's me their action, then their character does nothing. If I receive PM's from everyone, the Night will end early, and then the cycle repeats itself.
• For some reason, Star Swirl the Bearded decided that this particular wedding should have ghosts in it, so you guys can still talk if you're dead, you just can't vote or do night actions.
• The game ends when all the Changelings are killed, or when there are the same amount of Changelings as there are ponies, in which case they kill all the others and make their own escape.
• PM'ing players about the game is cheating: You can still PM other players, but keep Werewolf/Mafia conversations out of it.
• Forum rules still apply in this game. Any breakage of the forum rules will result in a quick and painful death, along with whatever the mods feel like dishing out.
• Don't be a dick. That's just not cool yo.
• The Royal Sisters, Luna and Celestia, watch over the castle like godly eagles. If they catch you breaking any of the rules of this game, or the forum, you will either be burned in a pit of sunfire or be driven to moon madness and die from your brain exploding or something.

Am I forgetting something? Oh right, gotta introduce these roles, yo.

There are two factions: Changeling and pony.

Normally Changelings wouldn't kill ponies as they are their main food source, but for the sake of the game, they will be killing things. There are three types of Changelings, the most powerful of which is their Queen, who they are eternally loyal towards.

Now, that's not to say the ponies can't have any fun, either. Most ponies have certain magical capabilities, but there are a select few who represent the Elements of Harmony, which gives them special powers vastly different from those of other ponies.

Pony roles

• Equestrian: Your standard pony. Nothing special about these guys. Well, some of them can shoot lasers from their face.
• Element of Honesty: Due to their fine-tuned lie-detecting skills, this pony can tell when someone is telling the truth. Each night they may target one player and learn their role.
• Element of Kindness: While they spread kindness and love wherever they go, this little pony is not at all who they seem to be. Each night they may target one player and kill them.
• Element of Laughter: Everypony loves this pony's zany antics, and they know exactly how to use that to their advantage. Each night, they may target one player and distract them, preventing them from using their role.
• Element of Generosity: This pony loves helping others, and spreading gossip. In this case, their role includes both. Each night they may send me a PM, which I will then pass on to another player.
• Element of Loyalty: This pony never leaves a friend hanging, and will do anything to keep them safe. Each night, they may target one player. If that player is targeted that night, the action is used on them instead.
• Element of Magic: A jack-of-all-trades, this pony has a little bit of everything in their arsenal. Each night they can use the action of any other role; However, after they have used an action once, they cannot use that same one again. (also the color for this one is teal because there's no magenta)
• Immortal Alicorn Princess: Only Princess Notevil Goodpony has this role. It doesn't actually do anything.

Changeling roles

• Drone: Just another mindless member of the hive. Their job is to be a slave.
• Worker: A step above the mindless Drone. This Changeling has been observing ponies very closely and has learned exactly how they work. They share the abilities of one other power role.
•    Queen:    The undisputed ruler of the hive. They get a final say in nightkills, and also have temporal immunity, meaning the first time they are targeted by any specific role, it fails.

Heeeeey, I was planning to run a pony-based game! The premise was pretty similar, but I had the Mane Six roles arranged differently (for instance, I had Loyalty be the Hunter-equivalent and Laughter be the Jailer-equivalent), and instead of giving some Changelings special powers, I had neutrals and good ponies whose role abilities hampered them instead of helped them. Oh well, I guess it'll have to wait until I can rewrite it a bit.
