Let's see.

  • "Band Named After A Song" sounds like a viable trope.

  • "Band Named After Its Members" also sounds like a viable trope.

  • "Band name that has an umlaut" is already covered by the page on Heävy Mëtal Ümlaut.

  • The section on misspelled band titles is already covered by Myspeld Rökband

  • "Band name with a hard word and a soft word" could be a trope but I'm leaning towards this being pointless trivia.

  • "Band name that is a compound word" is People Sit On Chairs. Likewise, "band name that is Verb the Noun" and "band name that is a sentence" are PSOC.

Okay, this should be enough to call.

BTW, the lead option is how the show Unskippable does it.

I'm on the internet. My arguments are invalid.

[up] It was called a few days ago. We're discussing what to do with the examples that don't fit.

Any progress here?

One last try. Do we want to do something here?

I'd be willing to go ahead and cut all of the sections deemed People Sit On Chairs, but I'm not sure if that'd be okay.

Is it okay if I trim this to just the examples where a character actually says "X is a good name for a rock band"? Almost all the actual examples of band names seem to be People Sit On Chairs.

[up] That's what the crowner supports, so I'd say that would be fine.

[up]There's only one problem. There kinda aren't any actual examples of that listed on the trope page.

Also, the inbound links are nothing but work pages saying the name of said work is a good name for a rock band (e.g. the As I Lay Dying page says that As I Lay Dying is a good name for a rock band — As I Lay Dying, the work, doesn't contain an example of the trope).

None of the inbound links suggest that any work actually contains an example of the trope.

[up] Hum. That is a problem. Maybe throw a brief description and a link into YKTTW to see if examples can be collected?

Like the idea.

[up]So if this goes to YKTTW, does the current form get cut?

[up] I hadn't realized the current page was so... utterly different in description (that's what I get for posting suggestions in a TRS thread where I haven't looked at the page for a while). A full YKTTW for a new description and example list might be in order (would we have to have another crowner for that?).

But I wouldn't cutlist the page if we're going to be using the same name; cutting auto-locks it. The new version would replace the old content.

I'd have thought that "Band named after a song / song lyric" would be Literary Allusion Title. Sort of.

I'll have to disagree with "band name that is a sentence" being PSOC. Names aren't usually sentences. As a matter of fact, sentence as name sounds very peculiar and it sure does differ from the standards of naming. I'd say it's tropeable as long as there are enough examples.

Okay, so what do we do now? There was a consensus to limit it to in-universe examples, but as it stands, a.) the article has zero in-universe examples, b.) the wicks suggest that a near-total lack of in-universe examples, and c.) I couldn't find any in-universe examples on my own.

Can't really send it to YKTTW if you can't find any examples, now can you? I say we should call a new crowner for or against cutting it.

[up] did we crowner against a Just for Fun page already? If not, I suggest the next crowner is

I am not sure what is going on here. What's up on the page, for example?

Off the top of my head, Dave Barry and xkcd both used it in-universe. [1][2] YKTTW can probably find more examples. Run it through and see what comes out. I'm sure we'll find something. Because...

Can't really send it to YKTTW if you can't find any examples, now can you?

...finding examples is the main point of sending it to YKTTW, innit?

I am not positive on tying the fate of this thread to the fate of an YKTTW. They always seem to hold things up.

There are in-universe examples on the page too. I'm looking through it. I see The Dresden Files, Battlestar Galactica, Reduced Shakespeare Company, Kingdom Of Loathing, The Ricky Gervais Show, The Daily Show, and Homestar Runner, plus the other two makes a good nine examples. Not too shabby and a lot more than zero.

Well then, with that many legit examples we can vote between

  • vote up if split into trope and a JFF page, down if clean up the trope, no JFF page
  • vote up if rename trope for clarity, down if no rename
