So, I just started up a story I've been wanting to write for a while, and three chapters in, I realized the local "Asshole Noble Family" have a name suspiciously similar to the example in A Song of Ice and Fire, the Lannisters. Mine are the Lancasters.
I didn't do it intentionally, by any means, and only noticed it when I was describing the characters to a friend.
Is this something to worry about? Should I change the name, or just keep going with the current name?
"It's so hard to be humble, knowing how great I am."
I'm having the same problem: I came up with a name for my Mad Scientist school (the University of Cogsworth). Then half a month later, I realized that it sounds suspiciously like Hogswart from Harry Potter.
You too may have less of a problem then you think, considering that it's actually Hogwarts (and yes, the S does make a difference there).
If anything, the impression I get from Cogsworth is "Steampunk U".
I wouldn't be too worried There have been two Harry Potter's and another Wizard named Harry as well.
Why not two Lancasters.
I chose most of my protagonist first names based off other famous works, only because I feel that helps and single names usually can't be copy written.
