OK, I say 'Ambiguous Name', but really I just mean it's a bad one.

To quote the description itself, 'Please note that in Real Life the terms half-breed and half-caste are highly offensive.'

So why in the name of Odin is that our trope title?

Meh, that's how I generally read about the trope.

Main/HalfBreed found in: 145 articles, excluding discussions.

Since January 1, 2011 this article has brought 473 people to the wiki from non-search engine links.

These look like healthy usage stats to me. And the trope is about discrimination, so having a discrimination-implying name is sort of a given.

Is there any misuse going on?

[up]Which is why we have a trope called 'Bury Your Faggots', amirite?

A trope often being used in an offensive manner is not an excuse to be offensive ourselves. Besides, this trope is just about people with mixed ancestry, persecution optional. Tragic Mulatto is for when that mixed ancestry dooms you for life.

This trope refers to characters despised because of their status.

Offensive tropes with offensive titles exist. We have Where da White Women At? and Lolicon and we already hashed out that an offensive title is no reason to rename.

"Congratulations, you are now guaranteed to be despised by one or both sides of your family."

Yeah, it sounds like this is specifically about being people looked down upon because of their status.

I'm curious as to whether of not there has been any misuse of this for people that are of mixed background but are not despised because of that.

Still, I'm open to alternate suggestions. What do you think we should call this instead? Keep in mind the name should communicate the idea that the person is disliked because of their mixed background.

The name is fine. Political Correctness Gone Mad. We didn't rename Idiot Savant or Colon Cancer for that reason, and we changed the awful Black Guy With White Gal back to Where The White Women At for the same reason. Offensive tropes get offensive titles. No misuse has been proven or even suggested. I'm hollering to have this locked as per the new rules. There are plenty of other tropes actually in need of repair, this needs to go bye bye to clear space for legitimate issues.

Locking it up. The OP was basically "I don't like this name." No evidence that it's a bad name was offered.
