Starbound is a 2d, side scrolling, sci-fi adventure and exploration game being developed by Chucklefish. Chuckle Fish Web site here The games overall style is reminiscent of the look and style of Terraria but not in a copy cat manner but more as one of the inspirations for the games overall design. One of the team members is Tiy an artist who formerly did work for Terraria and who has also been very active in engaging the starbound community at large. The game is looking a lot like its own game so there is little to fear about it being a clone or copy cat of Terraria. The player is able to visit various worlds through a interface for navigation and exploration on their ship. The planets will have unique biomes and may contain natives of some variety or another. Most planets have some small unique feature and encounters on the surface. The planets are chiefly a single biome world that has a series of sub biomes. Dungeons, encounters, caches, and villages are likely to spawn on most planets. The storyline overall appears to have some variation according to what race the player selects to play but is still a work in progress. The origin stories for each race vary. Earth is destroyed or taken over by some malevolent force turning humans into a refugee population. The Avians have religious cast outs who defy the state religion. Schitzo Tech Glitch outcasts are fleeing execution as abominations for becoming aware they are advanced tech. Hylotl are trying to spread their philosophy. Apex are a race of Ape People with high intellegence. The Florans are a savage race that has a penchant for eating other races and are more akin a species of carniverous barbarians overrunning civilization. The game will feature side quests, main story line quests, and free roam. Currently only the free roam aspect is really in with story fluff able to be found throughout the game. The game will also feature cooperative game play with a plethora of options for servers. The limits of the hosting servers for mp will be based on the power and connection speed of the server. There may be plans for competitive multiplayer options like full out PvP servers to PvP specific zones or arenas. Other features include vehicles, procedurally generated weapons, enemies, equipment, armor and other unannounced elements. Survival elements such as a warmth and food meter are in along with cooking. The survival features will likely be optional in future updates. The game will have a strong element of exploration with players needing to find various raw materials for crafting, upgrading, and building. There will also be the ability to catalog findings of various items on the worlds. This data can possibly be shared amongst coop players or is stored in an electronic log book. There will also be an element of research involved for gear and weapons. Players will also need to find plans for crafting. The planets will be procedurally generated and have their own unique set of coordinates in the universe at large. Players will be able to claim whole worlds for themselves and alter them to suit their needs. The building and placement system is reminiscent of LittleBigPlanet being very visually oriented allowing others to see what your building. The idea being this makes cooperative construction more interesting and easier to coordinate. Also makes it easier to place items. The game is currently an open beta for those who pre-order for the full game. The preorders can be made through the games website. Support for future distribution via other platforms then steam is planned. The cost of the game is estimated to be between 15$ for the basic preorder. The devs are hoping to get the game launched via steam and desura. The current earliest release time frame is hopefully by the end of the year 2014 but is subject to change on an as needed basis. The Dev team has been releasing daily progress reports on features they are working on and general game progress as well as future patches.
