Don't think so, that's about as clear as the name is going to get without lumping everything into Manly Tears.
My webzone.I think the current name is okay, but there are only 41 wicks and 1 inbound so it's not as though renaming it would be very difficult.
If a proposed rename can be more clear than the dialogue, I advocate the change.
If not, this is a very, very good name.
Existing stock phrase titles should generally be grandfathered in unless there's evidence of an actual reason to rename. It's not healthy, but I don't know that the name is the problem.
i don't think F.E.'s own version gone far enough to troll him with malicious compliance.
...And even I make no pretense Of having more than common sense - R.W.WoodWeird thing is, this trope title is incredibly concise and well scoped (it doesn't refer to anything else that it isn't the trope). If it could be possible to reword it into an impersonal phrasing it would be great though.
I'm not sure if low imbounds for a trope like this would be evidence in favor or against a rename. I mean, who would want to link to it who knows about it? It's not like the Badass tropes or the character type tropes...
Fanfic Recs orwellianretcon'd: cutlocked for committee or for Google?Promising Myself Not To Cry would be neutral, but isn't as snappy; unless the original name is actually going to get misused, I'd be inclined to leave it alone.
Two inbounds. I mean, what does it take to convince people that Stock Phrases and dialog-like titles are not going to work?
Goal: Clear, Concise and Witty144 inbounds, actually. Look at the ptitle page
Are there other problems besides the dialog-like name?
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanStill not a good number
Goal: Clear, Concise and Witty41 wicks aren't impressing, but apart from pawsplay's suggestion I can't find a better title.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanI personally am not disputing a new name at all. I just wanted to either cut if this wasn't a valid trope, or rename if it turned out to be valid. As posters are not disputing the validity of this, then we need a new name.
As for a name, Failed To Hold Back The Tears?

I'm on the internet. My arguments are invalid.I like pawsplay's suggestion for making it impersonal, even if it isn't as snappy; hopefully someone can make it snappier. Since both the "promise" and the failure are components of the trope, what about Broken Promise Not To Cry? It is a fairly unwieldy though...
Fanfic Recs orwellianretcon'd: cutlocked for committee or for Google?Promised Not To Cry, then. Whether or not they actually cry isn't specified in the original description, and I don't see a fruitful avenue or discussion as to whether tearing up counts as bona fide crying or not.
41 wikilinks is not a large number. Let's review them, shall we?
Seems to focus on the Stock Phrase
- Big Time Rush
- Recap.Buffy The Vampire Slayer S 3 E 5 Homecoming
- I Promised Myself I Wouldn't Cry (okay, in context it's just a Title Drop)
- Little Women
- Sand In My Eyes
- Single Tear
- TheSimpsons A-L
- Unable to Cry
Zero Context Example
Not bothering to sort at this time
- (28 articles)
At any rate, the Self-Demonstrating Example as a Thesis needs to be nuked from this article at least. Shed no tears over that.

An Ear Worm is like a Rickroll: It is never going to give you up.Well let's also work on the parameters of this trope, because as it is, it's just dialog about someone insisting they didn't want to cry. Should this be expanded to generally trying and failing to hold back tears?
I'm on the internet. My arguments are invalid.Okay, I made a page action crowner, with three options so far. If someone can think of more, go ahead and add them.
But I think it's pretty clear that keeping the old name is off the table, for the reasons already stated on this thread.
I'm on the internet. My arguments are invalid.Bumping for more votes.
I'm on the internet. My arguments are invalid.Sorry for the quadruple posting, but does this have enough votes to call?
I'm on the internet. My arguments are invalid.Nope. That's just 10 votes for one option. Let's wait for 15.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanI should add that I have a good quote for this. It's from when Doug Walker did a review of Snow White (for his "Disneycember" videos), and he mentioned that as a kid he was trying to be tough when all the dwarfs were crying over Snow White, and then Grumpy started to tear up, and Doug couldn't take it anymore.
I'm on the internet. My arguments are invalid.Bumping for yet more votes.
I'm on the internet. My arguments are invalid. It's been one day, man...
Fanfic Recs orwellianretcon'd: cutlocked for committee or for Google? The last bump for votes was three days ago. And if you mean since the last post, it's that there were barely any added since then.
Plus the sooner we get enough votes, the sooner we can resolve this thread and free up some space.

I'm on the internet. My arguments are invalid.
Crown Description:
I Promised Myself I Wouldnt Cry has been voted to be about any time one is trying to hold back tears, whether successful or not. So it needs a new name.
Yes, it's largely about the dialog, but it's mainly about someone trying to avoid tears in an emotional situation, and not succeeding.
EDIT: Important question about the trope definition brought up in post #17.
