It was, and now it's the 240 if they've got one attached. Doctrine says 75% of a fireteam's firepower comes from the SAW, and 75% of a platoon's firepower comes from the weapon squad. Didn't stop them from trying to use the Colt HBAR, or just M 16 A 1's on full auto.
IIRC, the British L86 is getting a new lease on life as a Designated Marksman Rifle.

Anyway, there are two parts where Ricardo Tubbs (played by Jamie Foxx) is using a Heckler and Koch 69A1 grenade launcher as a shotgun, and I wanted figured out exactly how that would work.
Here's the link explaining the mechanism.
If you can't see the link, here's the relevant bit:
Kinda cool. I didn't know you could do that.

Nope, the L86 is on its way out. It's been replaced in the support weapon role by the Minimi and in the DMR role by the LM7.
"Yup. That tasted purple."The military made the M576 as a purpose made round to give grenadiers a CQC round without having the need to carry a second weapon. To top it off the flechettes had poor performance because of excessive tumbling and being easily deflected by under brush and vegetation. Which is why they used buckshot instead.
Who watches the watchmen? But isn't that kind of redundant with the advent of the M203?
"Yup. That tasted purple."Not really. The round is still good for room clearing and other CQC scenarios. It can also cover a wider area then rifle in a single shot.
They are not all that common as far as I know though.
Who watches the watchmen? The buckshot round is one of those legends, like you know it exists but you'll probably never see it. I've found more D Sh K's and thermite grenades than buckshot 40mm rounds.

Beretta USA said the U.S. Army has rejected the gun-maker’s request that the service reconsider its M 9 A 3 pistol as an alternative to the Modular Handgun System (MHS) program.
Beretta officials sent the Jan. 30 request in response to the Army’s formal rejection of the M 9 A 3 Engineering Change Proposal to the current M9 contract.
“Needless to say, we are disappointed,” Gabriele de Plano, vice president of Beretta Defense Technologies (BDT) Marketing Operations, said in March 2 email.

That's got to be a way to get a stomach full of cordite or some other chemical nasty.
Schild und Schwert der ParteiI don't know what the going rate for .223 is at the minute but I'm pretty sure that it'd just be cheaper to buy a gas cylinder for the barbecue.
"Yup. That tasted purple."That reminds me. Haven't we phased out cordite? It was my understanding that cordite has just about been replaced by WC844 ball propellant and some other designs.

You might find it in older cartridges and maybe from those who do handloading.
In general no there really isn't cordite in modern ammos anymore. See here I don't think even anything but older artillery rounds use it either.

Who watches the watchmen?Deadbeat, it's not about cost. It's AMERICA, FUCK YEAH! and America doesn't give a shit about cost.
(See the F-35, or more topical to this thread the AICW. )
All your safe space are belong to TrumpIronically enough, despise all the cost scandals, at the current production rates the F-35 is already cheaper than the French Rafaele and slightly more expensive than 4.5 gen fighters like the Eurofighter.
Inter arma enim silent legesDoesn't mean it's GOOD.
I'm baaaaaaackBut unfortunately, it's the only game in town.
Keep Rolling On
Doesn't mean it is bad either, the Airforce pilots who flew the thing said they loved it and it was much better than the planes they were replacing, mostly due to sensor fusion and digitalized displays.
Inter arma enim silent legesSo I think I've found an ideal gun to take vampire hunting. >.>
Ohhhhh...
I'm baaaaaaackBalls made of garlic-covered, blessed yew and that thing would be the end of your typical vampy problem, yes...
How about wooden stakes seasoned with holy water and garlic?

I'm pretty sure at that point the bulk of the squad's automatic firepower was the M60.
