As the world gradually took form under the hands of his fellow Gods, Codex was pleased. He took a glance at a barren strip of land near Malnuall's Mountains That Also Happened To Be On Fire. The organization of the desert's sand still intrigued him, though he was still perturbed by its inability to sustain life. Still, that could be worked around...

West of the Mountains That Also Happened To Be On Fire, Codex willed into being a desert lining the frozen coastline. Then, from A Mountain Adjacent To the Mountains That Also Happened To Be On Fire, Codex made a river flow down from the slopes of the mountain. Along the banks of the river fertile grounds sprung up, a cradle for plant life in the midst of the desert. He made the mountain providing the source of the river snow for one quarter of the year and remain dry for the rest, so that the floods of the river would be predictable.

But something still nagged at the back of Codex's mind, like a hook. Plants and animals were elegant, yes, and they served a purpose, yes, but they could only serve whatever purpose was assigned to them. They were tied to the earth, and all of its trappings and transience.

A plot began forming in Codex's mind. With a wave of his hand, he expanded the mountains along the northern part of the continent.

"Oh thanks man." said Malunall. "I was gonna do that mountain extension myself, but obviously you got that for me."

He eyed the island west of the Mountains That Also Happened To Be On Fire. "Yeah, we're running out of room, I see. Well, I dig those tundras you set up, and it's already extended via a bridge of ice... okay, may as well build up a little extra power this turn."

Malunall took another swig of the horsemilk then nodded to the land. The island froze over, creating a nice little tundra island. "Cool. Heh."

Some confusion over a little corner where I meant to put tundra but Luthen filled it in as Arctic. Let's just slide over that one, since it's in the same area as another Arctic place and I already transformed it, so yeah.

Arane cheerfully gives some fermented milk to Cwper and surveys the land that she had dominated. The south seems to be completely shaped. They'll be coming here next. What are they planning?

"Let's defy more laws of science!"

Snow covers more land by the mountains. A bizarre forest springs up: a mix of evergreens and deciduous trees and other plants adding color to the landscape. To her, this is far more beautiful than a sea of green.

"The snow lasts year round and the trees will continue to live," Arane says proudly. "And the leaves will turn color, wither and fall, and grow back as they would elsewhere."

"None of our handiwork is worth much if there's no one to appreciate it." Morality said. "And I don't think any of us truly appreciate what we're creating. It's time to change that."

Morality focused the sun down upon a singular point on the world, one that to the eyes of all present seemed hardly larger than a dot, located somewhere near the lake that stood out amongst the range of stone pillars he had created early on. And as the sun shown down, he topped it off with a lightning bolt, then let the sun resume its normal schedule. When the smoke had cleared from the point upon which the lightning had struck, up rose a being, Morality's own answer to the living elemental structures that the others being had created thus far.

It was a woman - a maiden so fair her skin shined with radiance, and would have been even greater had the clothing she wore not held much of the light back. And on her back, a grand pair of wings allowed her to move about without ever having to step foot on the ground. And thus she was dubbed "Celestia".

"Through you shall this planet finally be populated by lifeforms capable of recognizing the wonder of what is going on around them." Morality said to her.

The maiden nodded, and she rose up a people not all that unlike herself - an upright walking folk, fair-skinned, with sharp-tipped ears and wings on their backs, granting them flight as well.

"And so you shall be called the 'Avians'." The Maiden Celestia said. "The Sky Folk."

The First People.

Present that they could watch and be amazed as the world continued to come into being. They would be there to record the earliest history of the world. They would be there waiting for the other races that would join them, that they could welcome them into the world and share what they knew. And they would be there to help educate those people in the ways of friendship and community, and to help protect them and guide them in times of misfortune.

"And it shall be through you," Celestia said, addressing the new Avians. "That this world shall be a prosperous place or all who come after us."

And in doing so, she took the final step of instilling in them a basic sense of goodness and...morality. The basic knowledge as a people as to what was right.

And so it was that the Avians were there to watch as the vegetation on their island home continued to spread, and transitioned from grassland to plains as it spread out further and further away from the fresh water that had kick-started the islands plantlife.

"There!" Morality said. "Now there's someone around to appreciate all that is being done."

He looked at the one last empty spot on the island he had worked so hard on, figuring that it could probably use one more spot of plains before focusing on truly getting the new Avian race ready for the world that awaited them.

Codex studied the creation of the new race intently. They had been created with a skillful hand, yes. They thought both about the world around them and about their own thoughts; they could reason just as well as any God.

But what could either he or they accomplish that the other could not? And what could he accomplish that was nothing but a parlor trick, a showy demonstration of divine might? What could the Avians, or any mortals, accomplish that was not bound by the confines of flesh and Earth? Codex descended to the Earth and sat beside Hammurabi. With the manifestation of his will maintaining a silent, watchful vigil, Codex began to meditate.

He, though almighty, was impotent. He could paint over the surface of the world but could not shake the firmament. He, though omniscient, was blind and ignorant. Though he knew that there was a structure to the universe he did not know what it was like. And just as he knew that there was something that lay beyond mere consciousness, the trivialities of want that plagued any thinking mind, he did not know what that greater state was like. He couldn't possibly conceive of it, he just knew that it was there, taunting him.

Cwper took a swig of the offered drink. Paused. Then spluttered and gagged.

"Oh, Us, that's horrible."

The woodwind goddess was distracted from any further disgust by Morality's avatar and her creations. They were beautiful, and winged just as she had been planning for her people. Maybe Morality would share? For now she would just appreciate.

"Thank you Morality, they're magnificent."

Cwper took a deep breath and began on the last phase of her floating islands. They were held in the sky by her power, so why couldn't they travel under it to? She imbued a jet stream leading through the strait between Morality's island and the southern continent, then west along the gulf. She had to raise the stream where it crossed her forests, but managed.

The goddess was a little light headed by the time she was finished, though the job wasn't. But Cwper hadn't expected to complete the circuit. The islands weren't subject to any divine push yet, so they hung patiently.

"Go ahead," Cwper waved at Besak, panting. "I'll just catch my breath before finishing it."

Morality nodded, graciously accepting Cwper's praise.

"Likewise, your efforts on your floating islands are something to behold." Morality said, figuring that the woman deserved a complement of her own. Besides, the islands were rather magnificent, both in their creation and their execution. It was exactly the kind of thing that the Avians were there to appreciate.

It was curious, as the being thought about it. Between the inspiration that Morality had taken from Cwper's work, and the inspiration that she had in turn taken from Morality's, and now the way in which Morality had seen to the creation of a race that seemed to capture Cwper's imagination as if she herself would have created them if Celestia hadn't done it first, there almost seemed as if there was some unknown force drawing the two together.

It was even more curious considering that based on any initial assessment that the being could have made, Morality would have expected that the being known as Codex as someone whom Morality would find to be a reliable ally. The two certainly seemed to have far closer philosophies on how to tend to the world, at least that's the way it appeared to Morality.

And yet, thus far the two were essentially operating without much care for one another's work, content to sit off in their own corners of the world and not bother one another. Perhaps it would be wise for Morality to re-consider the work done thus far and who might truly be worth keeping a close eye on.

"Tell me." Morality said to Cwper, hoping to get a better understanding of the woman that seemed to have thus far seemed to have been the best source of interaction the being had had. "What is it that you hope for this world? The work you've done here thus far intrigues me."

Shaken a bit by the forces of wills suddenly shown - Morality's focusing of the sun to create, indirectly, the good Sky Folk; Cwper's creation of the jet stream that would move her islands around the lower continent; Arane's near complete control of the northern continent - Besak found himself relatively exhausted and went to the sea that held his reef between mountains.

With a touch to the water's surface, a chilled fog rose up and onto the nearby mountain ranges before spreading to the forest in the west. Besak sat in the fog, considering the most recent actions and thinking on the future.

Codex rose from his meditation. It was time to act.

The northern continent remained relatively untouched. He would not interfere with the development of any burgeoning species here.

On the eastern cost Codex shaped a mountain range out of the earth, capping the tops with snow as the others had done. Then, he felt inside the bowels of the earth. He had done so before; when he first made the mountain to stop the desert's advance, he had sensed the minerals and metals that the Earth could yield, which had prompted him to expand Malnuall's own mountains. But he knew that there was something else under the mountains, hidden within the Earth—fire. Codex coaxed that fire from underneath the mountain, guiding it to the surface and letting it spill down the mountain's sides.

To the mountain's north, Codex took a patch of ground and, with a mighty rumbling noise, sunk it far into the Earth's depths. The lava flowed into the pit, filling it halfway to the top.

Malunall watched with interest as the land started to fill out. "Cool. There's only, like, 5 patches of earth left, and 5 of us, so I'll just fill in that last bit of land here with islands."

Malunall grabbed the land and pinched it upwards, turning it into a final filling of the mountain range.

"Oh, hey, Jeff." he said while he was down there, "I really just wanted you to be sentient fire so you wouldn't feel lonely, but considering you're a shapeshifter, it's time for you to do something for me. Go turn into one of those Avians, fly over there, and just start shit. You know, turn into a guy's spouse to make him think he's cheating on him, maybe fake an assassination attempt and become a one-man terrorist organization who possesses so many faces that you may as well be hundreds strong."

Jeff nodded, having actually gained a neck in his transformation. "Cool dude."

They fist bumped before Jeff flew off to go influence the Avians. From there, he inserted himself into their mobile flock, and showed the Avians discontent and sadness, sowing discord across their lives. Jeff and Malunall both saw this as being pretty sweet, since this was basically just showing them how awesome happiness is by contrast. Can't have peaks without valleys and all that.

"You shouldn't have done that." Morality warned. "I was content to let you go about shaping the world as you pleased so long as you let me and my works be, but you've just made a grave mistake."

His act had simply confirmed what Morality feared - that Malunall was a psychoitc being that would have to be dealt with, one way or the other. His actions, though minor now, would only be a precursor to greater threats that would come later. Sooner or later, justice would have to be dealt out, lest they let chaos and disharmony reign across the world.

Morality would likely require allies against Malunall at some point. Especially since he already appeared to be allied with Arane. Morality hoped that eventually, the beings known as Codex and Cwper could be counted on for aid. Morality didn't know enough yet about Besak to know whether he would be a potential ally as well, but hoped that the seeming order that Besak aimed for would help provide another counter against Malunall's madness.

Arane is slightly alarmed by Morality's threat, but she is mostly concerned with the abominable lava pit that Codex put next to her creations. But she might as well make the most of it, since undoing his work would likely incur his wrath. She covers the rest of the land with snow.

"What did you expect, really?" she asks Morality. "It would have happened on its own, someday."

She checks on her avatar's mood. The flames are smaller, barely covering the ice.

"Feel like talking yet?" she asks.

"Yeah."

She blinks in surprise at the response. The fact that the voice is male was also unexpected. "What's your name?"

"Might have to get back to you on that one, ma'am. Didn't seem too important. I sense that there's shit you want me to do."

"Yes." She points at Jeff. "Playing with mortals is all well and good, but try to make him back off and make things a bit better. Those mortals are not ours to play with."

She glances at Morality, as if sizing her up for a fight, and adds "Yet," under her breath.

Some of the fire detaches itself and forms the shape of a fox, which slinks over to the Avians and tries to set things right, whispering in their ears to forgive their neighbors and helping resolve disputes. Arane notes his diplomatic skills. That will be very useful later on.

Codex looked upon the scheming and plotting that took place between his fellow Gods, the prelude, he thought, to incoming events. Recent developments made his own preparations all the more necessary.

Once more, Codex found himself on the island with his avatar, his son, Hammurabi. They were joined yet simultaneously separate, two facets of the same being. Codex, the mind, and Hammurabi, the will.

As the world was shaped around him, Codex closed his eyes and began to search for enlightenment. In his mind he gathered all he had seen in the world that was beautiful. He pondered the restrictions of the mind and how they might be overcome.

For a moment, Morality considered smiting Jeff, removing him from the world entirely and severely blunting Malunall's ability to cast his vile influence upon the Avian race.

"You should not discredit the people so easily." Morality said to Arane. "But for now, you have my thanks."

But in the end, Morality refrained from the act. The decision by Arane to have her own avatar undo Jeff's damage quickly tempered Morality's anger, and also forced the being to re-assess whether Arane was truly allied with with the psychotic Malunall, or if there might be hope yet that Arane would be a being of reason.

In either case, there were better things to do now, and there would be far better opportunities to exact justice upon Malunall in the future, assuming he didn't shape up his act.

Through the guidance of Morality, Celestia gathered together the Avians, the Sky Folk, and inspired them to construct a city - a permanent home, and a grand step up from their current living conditions. Under the Radiant Maidens guidance and leadership, the Avians began construction on what would become a marvelous city, one built adjacent to and overlooking the waterfall that erupted from the islands central lake. As the city came together, it soon gained a name - Perelandra.

And so the first people begat the first city. And the Avians were no longer just Avians, the Sky Folk, but they were also Perelandrans as well. It was through this additional sense of fellowship and community, brought about by the construction of their great city, that the effects of Jeff's influence were waved off, further increasing their sense of goodness.

Content with the Avians work, Morality went about seeing to it that the plains expanded to cover the final pieces of his island.

But while Morality was pleased that his work with the island was now more or less finished, the knowledge that more could be done yet remained.

"Celestia, I am pleased with your work." Morality said, addressing his avatar. "And for what you have done, I shall reward you."

Out of the ocean, Morality pulled up a section of land, and planted it in the sky, just off the coastline of the island that such pains had been taken to craft. It was much like Cwper's own sky islands, but larger. And soon, the island became far more majestic as well. Out of it came a single, massive mountain. Around the mountain, a mix of plantlife sprouted up, and they were soon followed by a forest which stretched around the boarder of the island and part-way up the island. Then, finally, to complete the island, a lake was formed in the midst of the mountain, one that flowed out in a waterfall, ran straight out towards the edge of the island, and then finally fell off in another waterfall, allowing the the waters of the floating island to return to the ocean.

"I give to you this island as a gift." Morality said to Celestia. "As both a place of safe haven, and as a retreat so that you may have it to call upon in difficult times. I trust it to you to tend to as you please."

The maiden Celestia was most pleased by the gift, and was quick to establish it as her home. From here, she would be able to watch over and give guidance to the Avian people while still giving them space to be a race of their own. And the Avians, in turn, would be able to use the gift of flight that had been given to them to travel to the Maiden Celestia's Island in the sky if they ever needed to seek out her wisdom.

And so established was the unity between the city of Perelandra and the Maiden Celestia of the Island in the Sky.

Morality was pleased by this turn of events. Though there was brief consideration of taking a moment to lend aid to one of the other beings, it was not to be. While Morality could have aided Arane as a thank you for her own aid, there was a lack of certainty as to how to do it. Morality certainly didn't want to undo the pit of lava that Codex had created, for risk of turning a potential ally into a potential enemy. And Morality certainly didn't want to risk stepping on Arane's toes and making things worse.

Likewise, there was the consideration of helping Cwper with her stream of wind, but with as delicate a task as it was, Morality did not want to risk ruining what plans the woman might have had.

So instead, Morality decided to wait, let his work sit, and pay close attention to see if an opportunity to thank Arane for her aid would come up or if the chance to provide assistance to one of the other beings that hadn't yet committed an act of aggression against what had been done on the Avian's island.

"I have a name now," he says. "I am Hex."

"Is that short for Hexagon?"

"Very funny. It's not."

She gives Morality a sullen glare and stares at the lava. She wonders if Codex put it there to annoy her. She'll spite him, then, by finding a use for it. But what?

No messing with other gods' races. Even though none of them have any sense of fun. She'll have to make her own soon. Arane looks to the snow and to the lava again. A idea is beginning to take root.

Cwper had watched nervously as the Malanull and Arane meddled with the Sky Folk. She was almost spent and didn't think she could act before things came to a head. Fortunately the two seemed to cancel each other out. She also saw the city they made and itched to move onto races and civilisations but she had unfinished business.

She untied the knotted wind she had left, and finished the circle. The jet stream was only a light prevailing wind to most, but her floating islands would be merrily pushed along by it. Cwper thought they should make it round in a year.

Cwper looked down, the world was almost done. Just a couple of spots waiting for attention. She didn't want to step on anyone's toes, so just spread the mangrove forest. She included a natural harbour so that future people would travel there.

Refreshed by the rest in the fog, Besak looks around to see what had changed while he rested. A lake of lava in the middle of the ice. Arane and Malunall's avatars fought through the Sky Folk who founded a city. The fact that they came to a draw was disappointing.

Still, it gave a thought. And so the Lord of the Sun Besak made his way to the city of the Avians, Perelandra, and began to speak of its history with the force that only the God of Truth could put forth.

"And the Sun was drawn towards the land, and prepared the land for the creation of your Maiden, Celestia. And so the Maiden formed your people, the Avians."

As Besak finished speaking and left the city, a number of the Sky Folk gave praise to their grandmother Sun and began to follow the Lord of the Sun.

While Codex meditated, deep in thought, his mind abandoned the material world and dreamed of the incomprehensible and the beautiful. Everything that he had seen so far had been only superficially substantial. Codex could optimize the physical structure of a crystal but could not optimize the workings of the inner mind; he could not free it from doubt; he could not unlock its mysteries; he could not reduce it to a mere pattern or an application of physical law. Though divine, he was not enlightened.

For decades on end, Codex meditated while frogs croaked in the mangroove swamps and the Sky Folk flourished on Morality's island. While lava poured into his pit and the floating islands completed their cycles, he meditated, searching for the optimum state of enlightenment.

One day, he dreamed of a sea, infinite in depth and area. There were disturbances on the face of the deep, tiny ripples that incessantly collided with one another, sending yet more waves throughout the sea.

As he drew nearer to the ocean, Codex heard a lone voice. It sang a song the likes of which Codex had never heard before, not by the birds that had taken up residence in his lands, not anywhere else in the universe. It was soon joined by countless others, until a choir surrounded Codex with its music.

And for the briefest of instants, the secrets of the world were made known to Codex, every constraint barring his mind from enlightenment was removed, and every glory of the metaphysical universe was revealed.

For the first time in decades, Codex's eyes opened.

As a God, fundamentally removed from the physical universe, Codex knew that enlightenment, the mind's optimization, had been easier for him. But he also knew that there were no fundamental distinctions between his mind and that of a mortal's, and that a mortal too could attain enlightenment.

Codex put his plans into action.

He drew minerals and metals from the mountains standing tall upon all three continents of the world. Gathering them into one mass, Codex descended upon the pit of lava that he had placed in the middle of the arctic wastelands. There, in the bowels of the earth, he made the pit his forge, purifying the metals that he had collected, heating them until they could be molded, and then using the mighty hammer of his will to shape its form. As he worked, the divine nature of the lava pit and the influence of Codex's presence imbued the metal with strange and mysterious properties.

After one year, he was done, and the bodies of the R'lek, ten thousand in number, had been made. Codex, with his new creations, returned home to his island from the forge in the north.

The R'lek stood seven feet tall, their backs hunched and their heads bowed. The metal that comprised their bodies glistened purple-silver in the sunlight. Draped around their shoulders, covering and integrated with the entirety of the R'leks' bodies, was a cloak of armored scales that terminated in a hood obscuring their faces.

Codex placed them on the great plains to his island's south. He told Hammurabi, "Teach them to seek and never be satisfied. Teach them to discover the most efficient way to build a building and teach them to unlock the laws of the natural world such that they may consistently repeat the same marvels again and again. Teach them to sing, write, and paint beautiful songs, poems, and paintings. Most importantly, teach them that the path to enlightenment is that of discipline. Every soul that follows the path that you have seen me take will be a soul ascended to glory."

"Your will be done, Father."

As his last act of grace to his creations, Codex buried several deposits of the strange metal he had created along the coastline of the R'lek's lands. Then, he breathed life into the R'lek as he had once done so long ago to his son.

For almost a year, the R'lek wandered their plains, until a group of them made a raft and found Hammurabi's island. There, Codex whispered the words that needed to be spoken into Hammurabi's ear:

"Go make yourselves a city so that you may know what it means to accomplish great feats."

And so, through many years of labor, the R'lek made a city by the deposits of the strange metal. The wisest R'leks named the city Primus. Hammurabi's words guided them down to the deposits that shone with the same light as their own bodies, and there, they uncovered the metal's secrets—how it was supple, and could bend easily, yet in defiance of natural law could cut through any other metal and withstand great blows. The metal, Godsteel, was soon forged into weapons and tools.

"Ah, cool. Race of robots. They, uh... huh. Sorta overpowered there too. But, ah, now we're in the next age, I'll go and make me some people too. Check these guys out." Malunall flipped open a Dungeons And Dragons Monster Manual, then tossed the page on Azers to him. Then Malunall motioned Jeff over. "Okay, bud, I'm gonna need you to found the city of these new guys, uh, over by the Mountains That Are Also On Fire. They'll look like dwarves, but made of metal and also on fire."

And then Jeff flew back to the Mountains, just as Malunall was finished making his race of Fire Dwarves, the Azers, all muscle and bronze skin and bronzier fire cloaking their shoulders, dressed in MANLY AS HELL KILTS. Jeff shifted to appear as a regal version of their race, burning blue instead of orange.

"Sup." he said, waving casually. "Name's Jeff. Uh, Malunall, the guy that created you, sent me over here to help you guys out. And I just thought I'd be upfront here, I'm a shapeshifter. I'm not really an Azer or anything, just a powerful shapeshifter, and I prolly won't stick around much after the city's done. Uh, by the way, you got a... name? Like, for this place?"

And a single Azer did step forward, shovel in hand—the shovel was also made of fire—and said "WELCOME TO INCENDIA MOTHERFUCKERS!! STRIKE THE EARTH!!"

The Azers went to it with gusto, carving a city into the mountain in a matter of days, a great glorious blazing city, where the streets were paved in obsidian, and the curtains were made of malleable fire.

Oh wait. Malunall checked out those R'Lek. They might be a little threatening, so he decided to give the Azers a bit of an advancement too.

"Hey, check this out, dude." he said into the mind of one of his pr—wait, no, not priests, they're just Bros. "Okay, so the Mountains That Are Also On Fire are pretty hot, but otherwise you're a fairly cool race, it's like 90 degrees out but that's livable. Uh, anyway, I was just going to show you something here: if you were to combine some of the plants that grow on the Mountains and heat them with all that spare hotness you have, you can actually make this thing called an Alembic, boil the plants, and make all kinds of medicines and poisons! Nothing that dishonorable of using poison or medicine, after all."
