I'd go with one of the two from the Summer Sun Celebration, either one looks good to me, both for differnt reasons

@Awe: I also like that one. smile

And if someone else who would support Gandalf the White might find and link some pics, we would have a nice collection for the voting. smile

@L Mage: A valid point, but that's exactly what Cosmos is for me - first, a Big Good. This is in part because...

...well, there's a section of the wiki called the Trope Pantheons, in which the tropers have basically assigned a "deity" in the form of a real or fictional character to most of the wiki's tropes (and a few non-tropes, I think)*

. Cosmos has the actual title God of Big Goods in it.

I was not aware of that, she could make a good image for the page, but I'm not convinced the one put forth know is the best (either of her or for the page).

Also, is it Fanart? I thought there was some kind of taboo on using fanart of page images?

Not that I was aware of, although that is official artwork*

so it doesn't matter.

(In fact, no, there can't be. I should know; I composed the image for Memetic Bystander.)

kk NVM. Anyways, if you could get that picture croped and higher quality it might be able to work, but I would still go for Celestia.

Cropped to where, out of curiosity?

To where those floating creepy chicks are out of the way. They ruin any image of a Big Good.

EDIT: http://browse.deviantart.com/?qh=§ion=&global=1&q=Princess+Celestia#/d3iztps This seems to the best so far.

Something like this, then?

Well, she certainly has the big part down...

(never mind the fact that Terra is the only other female protagonist in the cast of DFF)

I have to say, I preferred the bigger version, where she dwarfs the others. "Big" Good, it kinda fit better.

So do I, actually. It just doesn't feel right without the others. I guess it's just Mage taking issue with Amano's art style.

(That said, seeing Nomura's character designs in Amano's style made me giggle.)

But with the others....Idk, it comes off as creepy. Would a person whose never played Final Fantasy be able to look at it as say "OMG there s a Big Good!".

I feel like the others ruin the image. It's much better without them.

[up]Speaking personally? Yes. I don't see why the "floating chicks" are particularly creepy at all, and the cropped version certainly doesn't work.

I'm all for pony page pictures, but none of the current suggestions here look fitting. Though the Cosmos picture looks even worse.

I like the full version of Cosmos in my last post, it is the only one that really looks the trope really.

I like the creepy chick when zoomed out best, the one where she appears big. But nothing really convinced me so far.

Few points to throw out:

  1. Laconic is "Leader of the good guys."
  2. Big Good is the complement of Big Bad.
  3. Images that play with the "large" meaning of "big" are funny.

Just want to throw something out there.

Light Is Not Good. There's nothing about the pictures suggested so far that show that Celestia is the trope. What is she doing that's good? Where is the evil in contrast?

Yes, she does have a regal and commanding presence about her (especially the pic where her guards are standing next to her) but that doesn't show leadership or good.

It's a bit harder to picture than Big Bad because while Big Good's existence (CMIIW) depends on Big Bad's, while Big Bad can exist independently. The implication is, for Big Bad we only need to show a reasonably ominous, authoritative, and ominously authoritative figure; for Big Good, we need to show that s/he's a noble leader opposing a Big Bad—looking "big" and "good" may not be enough.

I don't think that's true. Big Good can exist independently; it's the leader of the heroes in the same way that Big Bad is the leader of the villains. The keys are not "big" and "good", but "leader" and "good", I think.

You might be right, but the article is written in such a way that at least the most common incarnation of the trope needs a Big Bad to contrast it with.

Still, it's not necessary to the extent that we need to include one in the image.

By the way, several people mentioned last page that Gandalf the White might provide some good screencaps - any suggestions there? I'm not in favor, but it would be nice to increase our options.

Except for the part where Gandalf has other tropers he imbodies besides Big Good.

The Big Good image should be of a character that is very clearly, Big Good, first and foremost.

Except that's not a requirement for the image at all. It doesn't matter whether Gandalf is associated with other tropes as long as we can find an image that shows him as this. The "if" being the catch - I'm not sure if what Catelogue's talking about would be enough.
