Yeah but it's one seat, it's not like we're seeing the formation of a block here, it's one sodding seat.
"And the Bunny nails it!" ~ Gabrael "If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we." ~ CyranI don't think either Argentina or even Venezuela have a great deal of interest in developing a bloc. Argentina's foreign policy is pretty normal for a country in its position. Venezuela is simply opportunistic: they need a market for their one non-tanked industry.
Venezuela's UNSC seat is of little real consequence. It could be, if a more competent ambassador was there, and if Venezuela had anything to contribute to global security, but neither is the case.
Schild und Schwert der ParteiDoes this news story hold any bit of truth to it? I would have thought that censoring a public speech on an international forum would be one of the stupidest ideas to be ever done in the Information Age.

Schild und Schwert der ParteiArgentina Buying Gripens? Brits Say 'No Way'
But Rossi’s request appeared to ignore a likely insurmountable hurdle to the sale: Britain, its longtime foe, has a near veto on the export of the combat jet as a result of the substantial number of UK systems in the jet. More than 30 percent of the new version of the Gripen being developed by Saab is supplied by British industry.
Selex ES’ key active electronically scanned array radar, landing gear, ejection seat, electronic system and other sub-systems would all be hit by a British block on military exports to Argentina.
British business secretary Vince Cable invoked the ban on the sale of all military and dual-use technology for use by Argentina in 2012. That export license is still in place and will likely remain given the impasse between the two nations over resolving the sovereignty of the Falkland Islands.
“We are determined to ensure that no British-licensable exports or trade have the potential to be used by Argentina to impose an economic blockade on the Falkland Islanders or inhibit their legitimate rights to develop their own economy,” said a spokesperson for the UK Department of Business, Innovation and Skills.
The Argentinean defense minister made the purchase of the aircraft dependent on his country participating in the Gripen E program signed by Saab and the Brazilian government, which will see South America’s biggest nation buy at least 36 fighters.
The UK could sell them a monkey model, surely?
Schild und Schwert der ParteiIt's a Swedish plane it just uses British parts.
I'm baaaaaaackIe, so sell them Gripens with downgraded British parts.
Schild und Schwert der ParteiDoes Argentina even have the money to afford this?
Or did the Evil Colonial Imperialists™ take it all for their vulture funds?
"Yup. That tasted purple."That's still selling them modern fighter planes, which Britain won't do at all.
I'm baaaaaaackIf there's no UK parts in it, they don't get a say in the matter.
I haven't followed that aircraft's development, but going by the quoted news article, some stuff might be replaceable with parts from elsewhere, but not important gear that makes the design combat-effective (the radar in particular).

All your safe space are belong to TrumpFrom a security perspective the sale doesn't pose any kind of real risk, nobody is going to start actually worrying until Argentina tries to modernise its navy.
Still I doubt it will go though, if the Swedes have to chose between British involvement or Argentine involvement they're likely to go British, push come to shove our tech is already on the plane.
Now if the Brazilian government went to bat for Argentina I could see it happening, but why would they?
"And the Bunny nails it!" ~ Gabrael "If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we." ~ CyranBoth the Summary he posted and the article itself details the components which are british, which includes the Radar.
I'm baaaaaaackFalkland Islands are Argentine signs 'regrettable' Putting those signs everywhere just seems childish of Argentina.
I Bring Doom, and a bit of gloom, but mostly gloom.I found this report interesting while seeing how Argentina was getting on: Is Argentina's Falklands secretary the ultimate minister without portfolio?
Apparently he refuses to actually go to Las Malvinas despite other Argentines going on over for holidays etc. and the Falklands government saying they'd be pleased for him to come. 's funny that Mr. Filmus says the locals would be very happy under Argentine rule yet never attempts to go there and talk to them about it...

...I guess he knows the reaction he'll get?
Keep Rolling OnDouble Post: Top Gear: Argentina makes formal complaint to the BBC
Keep Rolling OnI can't wait for the actual episode.
They do have medals for almost, and they're called silver!Read: They didn't publicly issue Clarkson with his P45 and make a grovelling unreserved apology for being an imperialist mouthpiece.
"Yup. That tasted purple."That's an "What are ethics?" Express exclusive, so I'd be careful with it.
Plus there's no real worry of anything being possible to happen unless Argentina rearms its navy, military planners will be focusing on that not the air force.
"And the Bunny nails it!" ~ Gabrael "If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we." ~ CyranThe Argentine Navy and Air Force have both been allowed to wither on the vine in the absence of conventional threats, and both are unlikely to be able to attack the Falkland Islands any time soon. The FAA in particular has still not, over thirty years later, replenished its losses from the 1982 conflict.
Can we discuss something else?
Schild und Schwert der ParteiSure, got a suggestion?

Yes, which in a sense is a perfect result for Buenos Aires - come to end of term, pass seat to ally.
