I honestly wouldn't call Suite one of the weaker series. While I haven't watched them I'd apply that description to the first two seasons more since I've heard from multiple places that Splash Star takes everything about them and does it better.

Splash Star was actually the weakest of all Precure series, lowest ratings and lowest toy sales of the entire franchise. No one really liked it due to the fact the M Cs were just 2.0 versions of Futari Wa's characters and how the combat was nerfed to Non Contact Combat.

The only really popular element to it were the first Dark Magical Girls of the franchise Michiru and Kaoru.

I personally share those opinions.

Splash Star is kind of like Futari wa except worse in every way except a couple of the villains and the finale. I guess it's better than Max Heart, but that's not a bar you want to limbo with.

So long as it's not as dumb as "We need to find a secret base! Let's go to a hidden place that only the five of us know about to find this secret base!", I don't mind.

Is it true that episode 6 of Smile PreCure had a "deciding the team name" plot that Glitter Force left out due to its own early precognition plot?

Oh yeah that.

I dont think any other series gets THAT dumb. Unless you count the occasional team relationship fights where things are kinda petty, misunderstandings and/or overblown but those are normal for team based shows.

EDIT I thought the trope for that was Just Make Up Already but no, .

You're not supposed to take that seriously. Like, it's fine if you're not enjoying it, but that is the weirdest thing to drop a show over.

But anyway, the only rankings you'll ever need.

  1. Heartcatch
  2. Yes 5
  3. Fresh
  4. Go Princess
  5. Happiness Charge
  6. Futari wa
  7. Smile
  8. Yes 5 Gogo (Yes 5 sequel)
  9. Splash Star
  10. Suite
  11. DokiDoki
  12. Max Heart (Futari wa sequel)

Well I don't expect most people to rate Yes 5 as high as I do. That's how it works.

Oh we are ranking them now?

  • Heartcatch
  • Futari wa
  • Suite
  • Fresh
  • Go Princess
  • Yes 5
  • Happiness Charge
  • Smile
  • Yes 5 Gogo
  • Max Heart
  • Doki Doki
  • Splash Star

I actually like Slice of Life elements of stuff like Fresh and Smile though.

Yeah, I wouldn't mind a misunderstandings fueled plot over a Wizard of Oz style We Could Have Avoided This Plot.

Smile has like half a dozen or more episodes where something wacky happens because a magical thing was tossed out of the bad guy's lair for dumb reasons, and the Cures and/or Candy activate them for no real reason.

Those were the good times. Nothing has really matched Happy Robo ever since.

You have to understand that Smile is a comedy first and foremost. All the other series have their funny moments of course, but Smile's primary focus is laughs, which is why it has a lot of characters making weird decisions and wacky magic plots.

I was surprised how many people rated Fresh so high when the only opinion I had seen was this one, but maybe the later series are just that much worse...?

I can't rank the series because I'm too indecisive. All I know is that the first two are at the very bottom because I've never seen them and nor do I intend to ever see them.

Aw, you don't like Black and White? I guess it's possible to get annoyed by how much Natalie stresses out over everything, but I thought that set up all the fun action that followed!

(As I'm skimming through that rpg.net topic again, I see that episode 6 of Smile was supposed to be about coming up with a team catchphrase. It was also interesting to see dkellis's opinions on the flaws of Heartcatch and how irritating Cure Moonlight was. I haven't seen that series, but I did watch an All Stars movie just to see more of the Glitter Force, and when the Heartcatch team came out, I was like, "Now those are some very cute kids—whoa, who is that sophisticated grown-up? That's a pretty nice anthropomorphisized Princess Luna you got there!"[lol])

Moonlight irritating? Wait WTF? She is probably the least irritating Sixth Ranger out of all of them.

Moonlight is great, she is like Grizzled Veteran of Magical Girl who has become a Broken Bird because of the crap that has happened to her. It helps that she is voiced by the same person who does Sailor Mercury.

As I recall they didn't like Yuri because she wasn't very nice to the girls for most of the show. I can see why they'd be irritated by her.

Heh, I've been associating Cure Beauty with Sailor Mercury due to the English dub.

Cure Moonlight is exactly like Sailor Mercury, shy nerdy Cute Bookworm and such with the same voice. But if her father goes missing and declared dead and her Mentor Mascot is killed right before her eyes depowering her. And that's just in the first episode.

After that she has to watch as her only friend's sister becomes part of the next generation of cure.

Of course she is going to be standoffish but she was never irritating. She helps out as much as she can without getting too close to them.

dkellis was the one I mentioned above on not liking Moonlight (remember that one, Aegis? I think I called him similar to Sterok, then you kind of flipped at me... We patched up though). It's his opinion, let him have it.

Me? Well let it be known that Moonlight caused my views of Heartcatch shift into "Come for a Magical Girl Show Starring Nana Mizuki, Stay For The Badass More Mature Magical Girl Played By Aya Hisakawa" In other words, very positive.

And... well, sadly I think he stopped doing such Let's Watch midway to Dokidoki. Dunno why, interests shifted or Dokidoki made him lose faith... It's a pity, I'd like to see him go through Go Princess.

Heartcatch and Moonlight are a bit unusual in the sense that Moonlight is simply superior to Blossom and her first buddies. Blossom has no secret power or weapon to bust out when the going gets tough, and Moonlight is consistently the strongest. It's ultimately about building up and breaking down Yuri, the one who doesn't play well with others in a show about friendship. I like it, but I can see how some have issues.

I actually can't think of another magical girl show where it's happened. Usually the main character is just the strongest (Sailor Moon, Madoka, Heart essentially), is the best fighter (Nanoha), has the most willpower (Yuki Yuna, arguably Peach), or is just treated by the narrative as the most important because reasons (Mew Ichigo, Precure leads in general). Heartcatch has Tsubomi as the emotional center, but that's about it.

Sailor Moon isn't really the strongest, except in very specific circumstances.

Looks like the latest and next episode is/will be about world building, which is nice.

Episode 2:

It turns out, that the Legendary Magicians "Precure" are really legendary in this series as in "What, you come back and say you got your ass kicked by some kind of legend? Get real, man!".

So, in this episode Mirai learns, that Riko actually isn't that good with magic and she was searching for the Magic Stones to make the cut. Also, we learn that magicians are chosen by some kind of magic tree and that this tree also can use the mascot to transfer energy to our heroines.

The finisher is quite big for the start, considering that it involves capturing the Monster of the Week into a juwel and shooting it to the stars!

The Prinicipal seems to be a cool guy and he has such a fancy hat, he isn't even wearing it!

I made translated subtitles for episode 2: http://pastebin.com/YpVhAG5b

Based on Japanese subtitles I found, which appears to be subtitles for the hearing-impaired. I kinda kept a bunch of the non-word stuff in there, although I also took a bunch out. Until I figure out something better, "Yokubaaru" remains in in its original Japanese.

Edit: The subs don't work properly if the raw has sponsor message... Media Player Classic can off-set the subs though, which would fix it. If those exist, it's +14500ms offset(press F2 a whole bunch of times) after the opening.

Edit 2: To use the subs, save the text into a file with .srt at the end, then, for Media Player Classic, open it up using Load Subtitles while you have the raw video open.

Spoilers, a picture of a bunch of the Linklestones(I think these all technically appear in the opening): http://i.imgur.com/MiEQBj9.png

Taken from here(contains a bunch of spoilers: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W9yvwt6SxlI

Other spoiler-y things to note: One of the toys is a Linkle Smartphone, which is where the fairy thingy resides(not Mofurun). It seems like the the fairy grows up in there.

This is all from an intro to Maho Girls Precure DVD, it seems, so it's not really super-spoily.
