Budget Supercommittee fails

I guess that the Supercomittee thingy was pulled off to prevent people from complaining about their representatives/senators cutting spenings/raising taxes, which would have ditched the entire effort. Because, you know, the reason why governments are mire-deep in debt is because voters and lobbies don't want to pay taxes but want to get money.

  • The NO NEW TAXES pledge? Well, glad again that I am Swiss. This adds a whole new meaning to the phrase "you fail economics forever".

I imagine the Swiss are interested in preserving the state for the common good of all. We Americans generally dislike the government at best or pray for its dissolution.

Well, Switzerland has referendums nationwide, so it can't make reckless decisions.

Lawmaking in United States is very fractured and compartmentalized. If only the states would mobilize...

Now using Trivialis handle.

This is really pedantic, but Switzerland has nationwide referendums about national matters. And it is a federal state, so lawmaking can be very fractured even here.

  • [up]Also, I think that having more than two parties makes a difference. In other words, there are more than two policy choices to make, not only "making debt with tax-cuts" or "making debt with spending hikes".
EDIT: Removed off-topic stuff.

[up] Tell that to my Govt's face.

This is why I encourage violent revolution and starting over fresh with people as young/smart as us in charge everyday!

We're just waiting for a 2nd Great Depression to happen now and it gets blamed on the people instead of those responsible in Congress, and the rich/corporates who need to be taxed and fined to death just for breathing!!!

with people as young/smart as us

I hate to shatter your ego but most folks under the age of 30 are idiots when it comes to the political ways of the world.

[up] I don't give a fuck - they're much smarter than the old greedy fucks ruining my country.

There shouldn't even be SO MANY OLD PEOPLE in office. Most old people are worthless and don't care about the future or the young they're fucking over by being in Congress!!

Easy there kiddo, greed and self-interest are not age-dependent. There are plenty of cool old guys who'd make great leaders if the system wasn't aimed at weeding them out of the running. Look at Bernie Sanders for example.

I Said SO MANY. Not all. But yeah, you're right about that.

But that requires us getting off our asses and helping out first, either way.

And I welcome causing a few ass kickings myself...

@Major Tom: On the contrary, it's folks over the age of 30 who cause the entirety of liberty restrictions and puritanical bans. They're also the ones that choose to squander the people's money on pigs and prisons.

A shift in power towards the younger generation would reduce both authoritarianism and overspending.

I disagree. You don't have to be old to be a greedy control freak. Don't let the demographics fool you.

That's true — see Class Representative or Student Council President here. It's got nothing to do with age, and everything to do with personality...

Isn't Switzerland borderline bewtween a federal state and a [[confederation]]?

Switzerland, officially known as the Swiss Confederation,[7][8][9] is a notable example of a modern country that refers to itself as confederation. It should be noted, however, that Switzerland is a confederation only in name, as after the civil war of 1847, when some of the Catholic cantons tried to set up a separate alliance (the Sonderbundskrieg), the resulting political system acquired all the characteristics of a federation.[10] It had been a confederacy since its inception in 1291 as the Old Swiss Confederacy, originally created as an alliance among the valley communities of the central Alps, and retains the confederal name to the present day. The confederacy facilitated management of common interests (free trade) and ensured peace on the important mountain trade.

Heh. Older activists have a hard time of it, because they're "aging hippies" and thus on par with Communist hanger-ons.
