It's one of my favorite comedies, but I tend to prefer its more toned down female characters (like Kaga, Fujiyoshi and Komori) over the more over the top ones (like Kimura, Kafuka and Chiri. I find Chiri to be particularly odious and annoying).
I on the other hand like Chiri, Kafuka and Jun (the one guy).
This show has a good recipie foe comedy, but the fanservice is a little high at times.
I've been meaning to get into the manga after finishing the anime, but there's so many chapters.
I really like the series. Haven't watched it in a while though. I liked the manga well enough, but I think the anime is definitely much better- I've read up to volume 10 of the manga and am not sure I'm interested enough to continue.
I'm a bit ambivalent about Chiri and Kafuka. Kafuka is annoying, but I think she's supposed to be. Chiri's more hit or miss. Her psychopathy is sometimes pretty funny, although it can get old. As the series itself has lampshaded, it uses Chiri Does Something Violent. I do find it amusing that everyone knows she's a serial killer and they don't really care.
HodorI read the first two volumes or so.
Shit was good until I realized how long I would have to research Japanese culture just to understand the jokes.
I swear, the anime dub would have to have footnotes in every scene.
ohai
szs pretty much made me a studio shaft fanboy
and franz kafka, chiri kitsu, and matoi are my favorite characters along with Itoshiki-sensei himself
It's a pity that there is little chance SZS getting a fourth season.
I agree. I don't really see how can someone dislike Chiri, she's made of pure win.
I got hooked through scanlations, and started keeping up with the official printing...the latest volume is on my "waiting to be read" shelf. I really need to make time to watch an episode or two and see what it's like.
the shaft adaptation is fantastic
the work fits well with shaft's surreality and signature moves
I think the thing that's kept me from watching any of the anime is that I fear trying to keep up with the subtitles would make me miss too much of the other stuff going on, since SZS is so freakin' dense with in-jokes and satire literally happening all over the place.
Incidentally, how close are we in the States to an official release of the anime?
Media Blasters has had it for a while now. When they'll actually get to releasing it, we'll never know.
Don't mind me. I'm just a creepy little lurker. It seems like the manga is ending this month, which is truly sad... Now I kind of want to make an effort of reading the whole thing.
I vastly prefer the anime. SHAFT is really good at animating the crazy stuff.
I follow Kafuka's principle of relentless, somewhat sociopathic optimism.
Hah!
She is somehow almost inspiring though.

Negima, Air Gear, and this one; is something happening with the magazine?
I'm a (socialist) professional writer serializing a WWII alternate history webnovel.I love this show, my mum greatly dislikes the show xDDDD she doesn't get the black humour... She watched the first episode of it and said that (in her own words the main character was like all "grim and depressing" with the first hanging incident and that the "students in his class class were... (eyerolls)"
However I sympathize with Sensei Zetsubou somewhat...

In an anime, I'll be the Tsundere Dark Magical Girl who likes purple MY own profile is actually HERE!Quite a few manga are ending right now - on the K On thread, someone mentioned that this might have to do with a change in copyright law that will come in effect soon.
So, does anyone know how it ended? I sort of lost interest in the series, but was curious. Guessing Chiri and/or Kafuka killed the rest of the cast and/or Nozomu finally successfully hanged himself.

HodorThere are scanlations out... it's got a rather unique plot twist, and that's all I'll say.
AND there's a extra chapter. Which was... odd. Very odd.
Ah, Sayonara, Zetsubou Sensei. It and the ef animes made me a fan of Shaft.
When you get to the end of the manga, almost all those trippy OPs and EDs make sense.
Fantastic Supreme Überkaiser Emperor Folt of The Infinity and Beyond" ... "The First"!I would like to come out and say that the last few chapters of Sayonara, Zetsubou Sensei are non-canon.
I refuse to accept the ending of this show.
If you want any of my avatars, just Pm me I'd truly appreciate any avatar of a reptile sleeping in a Nice Hat Read Elmer Kelton booksThat sounds severe.
What happened?
I loved the ending. It was everything that was creepy, wrong and disturbing about the series taken to its ultimate consequences. And it was glorious.
Reading it right after my other then-current favorite manga's (Negima's) horrible ending, it was a godsend.
@Jordan: Well, I only read the final two chapters and none of the lead-up, but it would appear Kafuka dies in an accident that results in all the surviving girls needing organ/blood transfusions from her. They inherit her positivity as a result. Nozomu feels responsible, and marries all the remaining girls. He insists that he only has one wife: Kafuka. He married her eyes, organs, blood, etc separately.
Brilliant.
Loves feel-good animation a whole lot.
So, does anyone else like this awesome series?
