Especially since Folt posted something relevant(about Nintendo's stocks going up), which should be the current conversation.

I was surprised at the stocks reaction myself, but after talking to some folks on another board, one of the posters made the rather valuable point that it's likely people grabbing Nintendo stocks when they're lower and expecting the 3DS to do well.

Honestly, both Microsoft and Sony have recorded annual losses more than once in the past 30 years (the less said about Capcom etc. the better) and nobody screamed about it (even to say that their reign of tyranny was coming to an end, for those so inclined). Why is it such a big deal for Nintendo?

[up] Doesn't help that major gaming sites likes to hush up when Sony and Microsoft lose more money than Nintendo. I suspect they are doing so to to make them seem more like the "Angel" to Nintendo's "Devil"... Well, that and Nintendo doom and gloom stories are all the rage for them.

I guess fans of other consoles, so-called "hardcore"-gamers, the Fan Dumb, or the Hate Dumb just want to see them go 3rd party. Pretty sad to watch if you ask me...

Jesus, 30 years? That means their last loss was before the NES existed.

Besides the region locking hate I have, to me its more I want to see Nintendo be a bit more balanced again.

I want the race to be close. Not "Xbox and PS 3 fight for 2nd place, Nintendo releases a good first party game every few months, and coasts off Wii Sports.

You realize that something like that can only happen if Sony or Microsoft pulls out several series at Mario or Pokemon popularity level, right?

As things stand, Nintendo owns the top 3 franchises, next down are Tetris and The Sims*

, and then you start hitting stuff that won't be either Nintendo-exclusive or available to all systems* . And, even then, the 360 and PS 3 libraries are nearly identical, with the 360 having a few exclusives and the PS 3 having a bunch of 'em with a lot getting ported to 360 for the import. This means that they end up splitting the remaining market share while Nintendo has a lot more freedom.

Unless the dynamics of what I just pointed out change, Microsoft and Sony will continue to play second-fiddle for all eternity. They each need something exclusive that sells at the level of the Wii series at minimum. But that means that they must improve, not that Nintendo must fall. Mario and Pokemon pretty much cannot vanish anymore, so hoping they fall to a level where they're even is too much wishful thinking.

You know, it feels strange that they barely even react to Microsoft and Sony posting a loss(and even then they recover.) What makes Nintendo any different? Oh right, it's "cool" to hate on Nintendo.

It sure does seem like that at times. Eh, I guess that's the price to pay for being popular and successful.

[up][up][up]

Mario and pokemon and zelda are fine and all but when an entire brand relies on just using the same franchise over and over, it begins to feel a little stale.

[up][up]

Its more "Nintendo has been basically printing money until now, so people find it interesting to see they aren't now"

If Sony or Microsoft was in such a dominating lead like Nintendo was, and then started stumbling a little, people would be doing the same reaction.

[up]Precisely. It's exactly for this kind of situation. Keep in mind that Microsoft and Sony have other parts to mitigate the losses, but Nintendo doesn't really have such a luxury.

All the cash saved up is for this kind of situation - and they intend to invest to make sure that everything goes as planned.

Don't worry too much about everything, all right?

Also, when stocks go down, the opportunists buy it up. May be a reason why the stocks went up, people were buying them!

EDIT: Iwata speaks about this mess. Apparently, he considers the dismal 3DS launch His Greatest Failure. Well, at least he's doing something about it.

This is a problem and will definitely spook investors. However they evidently realize their mistake and are making plans to correct it. They'll suffer for a year, two at most, and then get right back to printing money once the 3DS becomes awesome and Wii U launches.

Lets not forget the big scare in 2003 when Nintendo reported a fiscal loss and discontinued the Game Cube's for a while,...look how that turned out overall

And by the next part of the year, things came back up.

And that's not even accounting for how the Fan Dumb and Hate Dumb react when they actually release a new title for a new franchise. They'll just bitch and complain about where the next Mario/Zelda/Pokémon is. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

On another note, I must say that I have never felt either Mario, Zelda, or Pokémon becoming truly stale. They just hit a low point (for them, almost none of the games I've played in either franchise has been truly devoid of any quality or fun) then spring back up again to top quality as always.

[up] Also, whenever those series release a new game or group of games they generally try to change things a bit from previous games.

Also, I don't think Nintendo's region locking is contributing very much to lack of sales. While some people refuse to buy the 3DS because of it, the main result of it is that gamers have to wait until the game comes out in their country, since almost none of the 3DS games are exclusives.

Most of them are relatively minor niche series when it comes to the big picture.

Uh, guys? Those of you wondering about the media reaction to the other guys' losses?

Do I live in an alternate universe where the first six months of this year were not devoted to Sony being the devil and how right it was that they got hacked and how they needed to immediately cancel all PS 3 production, etc, etc?

[up] That's not really comparable in my eyes.

Sony really fucked up there by potentially putting all their customers personal info at risk. Nintendo isn't dragging it's customers down with it.
