So, which series or show has the best art? Recently I've been drooling over Five Centimeters Per Second? What else is out there of comparable or even better quality?

Hmm... I'm thinking a good answer to this one will be hard to pin down. Most animation studios have completely different styles, after all. At some point, it'll get to apples and oranges.

That said, most anime I watch are for the story/because I read the manga and want to see it animated. For some reason, this ends up with the art for most anime I've seen that come to mind to be either bad or so-so, so I can't even personally answer the question.

For manga, Negima, due to the detail.

Red Line's art is undeniably high quality and one of the most unique I've seen in recent years.

Gankutsuou and Mononoke for their vibrant, intricate textures, colors, and animation techniques. And seriously, who can forget Haydee's CG dress? It's the only work in which the word "heavenly" truly applies to the description of a piece of clothing.

I remember watching an Appleseed film once (I think it was the second one) and being extremely impressed with the quality of the art.

As for manga, I think Vinland Saga is definitely up there amongst the best, especially after the Art Evolution occurs. Blade Of The Immortal has a sketchy, wild feel to its lines that I think creates a really... fitting atmosphere, shall we say, for the story. And of course, we have gorgeous artwork from CLAMP - with huge range of works and artstyles they've produced, chances are that you'll find at least one of their manga utterly sublime. For me, I highly enjoy the minimalist look of xxxHolic, the delicate lines of Tsubasa, the overblown shoujo glory of their early works like Magic Knight Rayearth and X, the cute, warm, mellow, rounded look of Angelic Layer and CCS.

One Piece, Akumetsu, Blade Of The Immortal. Even though I know it's not really good I love the art in Yu Yu Hakusho.
