Silverchair has 2 songs that qualify as hits: Frogstomp and Freak Show. Which song where you thinking of?

Wow, talk about Chart Displacement. Must be the whole "lack of a single release" thing, like most 90's hits.

Hilariously, the song that I most know by/associate Silverchair with is Straight Lines

I just find this song really bland. Like, what differences are there between it and Empowerment Anthem #3578?

If there really is an absolute need for more "body image" songs on the charts—and I can't believe I'm saying this—I'd much rather have more Meghan Trainor. At least her songs are upbeat and fun, and they leave some kind of impression.

Call me Willy Whistle 'cause I can't speak, baby. Something in TV Tropes really drove me crazy.

Well I found it elsewhere, oh she's the one who did "Wild Things". Anyways I did just kind of assumed it was about self harm yeah, like the plastic surgery thing didn't even occur to me until Todd said it.

All "Scars to Your Beautiful" makes me think is how I could be listening to White Lung's "Below" again instead.

Just had a thought for an episode of One-Hit Wonderland Todd could do: You're Gonna Miss Me by The 13th Floor Elevators. Admittedly, the song wasn't a huge hit (it charted at #55 on the Billboard charts), but it's one of those big garage rock songs that was placed on the famed Nuggets compilation.

Have you any dreams you'd like to sell?

I wonder if he'll re-vamp the show though.

"Look, when I started this show, I had this solid idea for the structure based on what I thought was the career path of the one-hit wonder. And more and more, I'm finding it not useful. Failed follow-up. Muse has never had a pop hit. No one goes, "man, those Muse guys are huge failures!" This is a stupid structure. Stupid, stupid, I need to revamp this show entirely."

I'm sure he probably has an idea.

Though, to be honest, I feel like the structure has served him well for most of the acts he's covered. Like, obviously he's not going to cover a band like Muse on it because no one in their right mind would consider them a one-hit wonder except maybe in the most technical sense (and even then, I think they might have actually had two pop hits), same for acts like Jimi Hendrix.

Still, it's his show, so it's his prerogative to switch it up, and I look forward to whatever he does to do that.

It might be kinda cool for him to interview some of the acts he's covered that have seen his reviews of their stuff.

I think a few of the artists have seen the episodes on them. Anyway, thanks for reminding me of these:

    The Jimi Hendrix Clause

"Sure, they only had one song that cracked the Hot 100, but by the same metric, Jimi Hendrix or Frank Zappa would be one-hit wonders. And usually, the term signifies not just limited chart success, but also relevance and influence; and Modest Mouse are indie rock legends with tons of fans and critical acclaim up the yin-yang, not to mention several other songs that made it onto the Alternative charts." - "Float On" Review

  • Jimi Hendrix, of course
  • Frank Zappa
  • Modest Mouse
  • Blink-182
  • Kraftwerk
  • Patti Smith
  • Seether
  • System of a Down
  • Ted Nugent
  • Radiohead
  • Korn
  • Norah Jones
  • Incubus
  • Faith No More
  • Gorillaz
  • The Prodigy
  • Daft Punk (and their one hit was too recent anyway!)
  • Breaking Benjamin
  • The White Stripes
  • Beck
  • Janis Joplin
  • AFI
  • De La Soul
  • Rush
  • Shinedown
  • Oasis
  • Grateful Dead
  • Muse
  • Nirvana
  • Butthole Surfers
  • Van Morrison
  • Blur
  • Franz Ferdinand
  • Disturbed
  • Blue Oyster Cult
  • Barenaked Ladies
  • Weezer
  • Los Lobos
  • Dream Theater
  • Faith No More
  • Warren Zevon
  • Love?
  • Jane's Addiction
  • Buffalo Springfield
  • Roxy Music
  • T. Rex
  • Warren Zevon

    The Rick Astley Clause
"You know, some acts, they get labeled as one-hit wonders even though they had plenty of successful songs, because they only had one that people really remember. I don't think that counts. I get a lot of requests for Rick Astley for this show, and it will never happen." -"Hooled On A Feeling" Review

  • Rick Astley, of course
  • The Turtles
  • Van Morrison (Yes, he's in both somehow.)
  • MC Hammer
  • Survivor
  • Rupert Holmes
  • Don Mclean
  • The Guess Who
  • Stevie B
  • Spandau Ballet
  • Harry Chapin
  • Gene Chandler
  • Wang Chung
  • Coolio
  • Ray Parker Jr.
  • Cutting Crew
  • Rick Springfield
  • .38 Special
  • Percy Sledge
  • Color Me Badd
  • Fine Young Cannibals
  • Hanson (Though Todd did an episode on them anyway, thanks to a very persistent fan)
  • Men at Work
  • PSY
  • Tommy James
  • Extreme
  • Vanilla Ice
  • Blue Swede (Though Todd didn't do his research, so he ended up doing an episode on them anyway)
  • Smash Mouth
  • The Knack
  • Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark

I would love for Todd to do an episode of Dream Theater but I know it will never happen.

Mostly because their one hit is an eight minute prog metal epic about Hamlet.

Daft Punk (and their one hit was too recent anyway!)
I'm still baffled by "One More Time" not having been a top 40 hit, considering how much I've heard it on the radio for most of my life after 2001. And I feel like with their production credits and featured credits the past year or two, they aren't really "one hit wonders" anymore.

[up]I think he only covers songs in the Hot 100 pop chart, not on the others (since that song was only a hit on the rock chart).

Actually, when it comes to his normal reviews, i'd like to see him not just limit himself to the Top 100, but also do songs that were big hits on the rock charts, the rap charts, country, etc. It seems he only covers those genres when they cross over (and since most rap already crosses over anyway,,).

...how in the world is Tommy James on the Rick Astley clause list?

I can think of six of his top 10 hits off the top of my head, and that's not counting ones I only heard for the first time recently like "Mirage". Covers of two of them were #1 hits consecutively in 1987! "I Think We're Alone Now"? "Mony Mony"? Yeah, those. "My baby does the hanky panky"? That was him. "Crystal Blue Persuasion"? "Sweet Cherry Wine"? Also him.

If anyone genuinely thinks "Crimson and Clover" was the only hit for him and the Shondells, then the problem is that person, not our modern society as a whole. And unfortunately, that's a big problem with the entire idea of the Rick Astley clause: that people are called one-hit wonders not because their music is forgotten, but because people who are too young to remember them don't really care enough to listen to them unless they're a meme.

I'd rather blur the lines of one-hit wonders with examples like "pretty famous German musician who had one song become a major hit in the US, with a lesser hit that hasn't been remembered well in the meantime, but also recorded a song that was translated into English by another band who also became a one-hit wonder with it". Because Todd's dropping his Falco review sometime tonight! Yay!

To be fair, I Think We're Alone Now and Mony Mony became associated with Tiffany and Billy Idol in the 80's in an egregious case of Covered Up. Though I have admittedly heard the originals played on the local classic hits radio quite often. Draggin' the Line gets played quite a bit too, but that's Tommy James solo. I'm surprised they haven't played Hanky Panky, though, that one is not only a number one record, it's certified Gold by the RIAA.

Also, where did Todd say the new One-Hit Wonderland was being posted tonight? Is this a Patreon Patrons first release or is it going on You Tube?

Speaking of songs translated from one language into English to be that band's one hit wonder hit in the US. I found out that "Around the World (La La La La La)" was actually a translation of a Russian song called "Pesenka".
