Use sugar.

Of course Spongebob is evil. Kids should not be exposed to the entity of pure evil and terror that is Mr. Krabs.

Why else would people keep adding him to the Complete Monster page?

Actually I just read the article (not the one linked here) about it. So apparently they believe that Spongebob Squarepants gives kids information overload, causing them to have attention deficit for some time afterward because their brain is busy processing all the data. I think that's a little different from "OMG NUKES YOUR BRAIN" that everyone seems to label the study results as.

Presumably the nine minutes of Spongebob were commercial-free, as from a tape, not broadcast. If they weren't, then the study was deeply flawed from the get-go.

Spongebob is one of the most annoying cartoons to ever be invented, and I keep hoping its popularity dies. I can see how it would kill brain cells.

That said, I have to wonder why they targeted this show specifically. Did they try out other shows with similar levels of activity to Spongebob and Caillou?

It doesn't sound like it. And it sounds like they weren't targeting Spongebob particularly, but rather that they were looking for a consistently frentically-paced cartoon.

I wonder how this generation of nine-year olds would react to Ren & Stimpy.

Oh Lord, let's not expose them to that. I think I got sick watching that when I was little.

Their little brains would probably say, "To hell with this," unscrew their owners' craniums and storm off, the pussies.

Anyways, the "slower paced cartoon", according to the version I read in my newspaper, was PBS's Caillou, which, since it is a PBS show, does not have commercials. Not a really fair study, I guess.

Well, there you have it. The kids did better on the tests because doing tests is significantly more interesting than watching Caillou, even for a small child.

Well, You can Go Mad from the Revelation if they revealed too many things fast enough. Maybe this is it's milder, or weaker, form?

Our generations 9 yeard olds would not like Ren and Stimpy. It would be too slow for them.

If you want to see what has happened to cartoons just take a look at the simpsons... It went from shere brilliance to being a fast paced no sensical slap stick humour of the lowest quality most of the time.

I am 100% sure that this new generations will be less able to concentrate. And not just because Sponge Bob (And I love Spongebob by the way)

My genreations 9 year olds didn't like ren and stimpy. It was about as funny as cot death.

And tbh? Have your kids do other things instead, play chess or watch something like "play bus", which I loved, instead of just plonking them down in front of the TV.

I think it doesn't matter what your kids are watching, if you just plop them in front of the TV and don't make them do anything else then of course their attention spans will be shot. And who relies on Sponge Bob to educate their children??

@ Baff - Too slow for them? I watched Spongebob when I was nine and I recall it having a bit of a lax nature compared to Ren & Stimpy. Spongebob is like an energetic They Might Be Giants song while Ren & Stimpy is free jazz played by rabid squirrels.

The problem is not that Spongebob is making kids dumber, but that its frenetic, fast-paced movement and fantastical nature makes 4 year old children (the ones used in the study) use up more of their attention spans and proper cognitive functioning trying to make sense of so much information. As a result, kids are alot less focused when doing certain tasks immediately afterwards. Slower paced shows like Caillou (which was used for the experiment) on the other hand, allow kids the opportunity to process information in a realistic, down to earth environment which the show takes place in. Also Spongebob is meant for older audiences around the age of 11, so these studies might not have much validity. I do think that just watching Spongebob all day with no other alternative channel can cause difficulties trying in paying attention and cognitive tasks.

They had the kids watch a whopping 9 minutes of the show. What happens if they watch the whole thing? The study was also admittedly small. I have my doubts about the study.

Who watches the watchmen?
