This has a few examples that seem to be "wearing fur is okay, as long as you explicitly mention it's fake"*, either In-Universe or Word of God.

This seems to be a variation of Pretty in Mink but to avert Fur and Loathing (as in the glamor of Pretty in Mink, but without the guilt). Do you think that would be enough for its own trope? There do seem to be enough examples.

* Not mentioning it could just be Pretty in Mink, but they didn't have the budget to use real fur.

If there's more than three, I support a split. It's a trope of its own.

A recent episode of White Collar mentioned that furs being bought were fake.

Although Veronica of Archie Comics wears fur a lot, often when she says what fur it is, it's fake.

In Something So Right, the husband's ex wife shows up wearing a fur coat, and the first time she says "Don't worry. It's fake fur." Her ex referred to her clothing and figure, saying "I don't think anyone's staring at the fur."

During a Comic Relief special, Fran Drescher showed up with a rack of furs. She held a black one, saying "It's fake, but you wouldn't believe what I had to fake to get it."

I know there isn't much interest, but the faster this gets resolved, the sooner we have another thread cleared from the backlog.

I can see the split. Fake Fur Is Fine?

Dont Worry Its Fake, As Long As Its Fake or something? Seems to be the default phrase around the topic. But Fake Fur Is Fine is more on-the-nose.

That and it would avoid seeming like a stock phrase.

Needs to make clear it's about fur. Dont Worry Its Fake or As Long As Its Fake sound much broader.

That's another reason I'm supporting Mad's suggestion.

Hmm, it could be interpreted three different ways:

  • fake fur is excellent (wow, that's really fine!)
  • fake fur is acceptable (meh, I suppose it's fine, if it's all you've got)
  • fake fur is not coarse

Not sure anyone is likely to misinterpret it, but I did have a moment of uncertainty on seeing it.

It's supposed to be "If animals didn't have to die for it, then it's okay." So if you didn't get that from the title, we might need to tweak this.

I am not seeing the possible interpretations Xtifr suggests. Sure, the phrase could perfectly well mean those things in English, but none are the interpretation that comes first to mind ("real fur is bad, but fake fur is OK").

I feel like it should sound like a reassurance to the audience - the show wants to use fur as a shorthand for luxury, style, wealth, etc, but has to throw it out there that the fur is fake so that the audience isn't offended or upset.

Fake Fur Is Acceptable may be slightly clearer though it does lack the alliteration of Fake Fur Is Fine.

I agree that "fine" is probably, erm, fine. I just wanted to toss out the notion of potential ambiguity for people to chew on. We could simply go with Fake Fur Is Okay, though. Nice, clear, short and simple. (Saves six letters over Fake Fur Is Acceptable, fwiw.)

Well the key in this trope is that it has to be directly stated In-Universe that it's fake, so as to avoid upsetting the audience. I mean, the live action films of One Hundred And One Dalmatians use fake fur, but still acts like it's real, and bad.

So the name should best reflect that, or else it would get misused for any time someone wore fake fur.
