They can do that? Disregarding that it's the name of a real thing, nobody else has that trademarked already? With how much people use that star for stuff?
Also, can Proxima Centauri get some love one of these days?

"The difference between reality and fiction is that fiction has to make sense." - Tom Clancy, paraphrasing Mark Twain. It's cool, I wanted another reason to stop buying EA games anyway.
Furthermore, I think Guantanamo must be destroyed. If you read the article, it says that they renewed the trademark, albeit two years late.
I put on my robe and tinfoil hat...The trademark probably just applies for video games. If Paramount for example wanted to make an unrelated Alpha Centauri movie, EA might try to fight it, but they would probably have their hands tied.
Not Three Laws compliant.Does it matter if it only applies to a given industry? I mean, you might as well trademark the dang sun.
Furthermore, I think Guantanamo must be destroyed.Considering there is a company called Luna Publishing? I think ye might be overreacting a tad.
All this means is that no one else can make a game called "Alpha Centauri." As far as I know it doesn't apply to any other industry. And I bet that people can still set games in Alpha Centauri, as long as they aren't named "Alpha Centauri".
"The fact that your food can be made into makeshift bombs alarms the Hell out of me, Scrye." - CharlatanI call dibs on Sirius.
"Steel wins battles. Gold wins wars."I am Sirius. And don't call me Shirley.
Jonah FalconWasn't/Isn't there an asteroid named "Apophis"?
"Hipsters: the most dangerous gang in the US." - Pacific MackerelOh great, calling it now: it's a dumbed down "re-imagining" of the original game, if it's even a TBS still.

More like a hack 'n slash or cover based shooter remake that "innovates" the game into the mainstream market.
Thank god EA can't touch System Shock.
Or better yet: an RTS that has no base-building whatsoever!
Anyways, note how Sid Meier's name isn't there. They're probably pulling a Shift 2.

"Hipsters: the most dangerous gang in the US." - Pacific MackerelNo, with history as it is, it's realism.
Oh wait! I got it! It's going to be a Facebook game!

It might be a competitor to the FB Civ game. *Shudders*, that would be ironic though.
Dutch Lesbianx6 Or it's a cover-based Hack N' Slash RPG with base-building that innovates the... wait, what the fuck?
"Sarchasm: The gulf between the author of sarcastic wit and the person that doesn't get it."I seem to be the only troper who looks at this as good news. Alpha Centauri 2! Yay!
After all, Civ 5 was perfectly fine.
...Or was the original not made by someone owned by EA?

Civilization 5 was published by 2K Games, the owners of Firaxis.

'twas brillig.Ah. Then this means neither the Civ5 team nor the SMAC team will be doing SMAC 2 anytime soon? Yeah, this is probably bad.
It would probably change from being "Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri" to "Will Wright's Alpha Centauri".
If that was the case, it would probably end up better than an FPS or dumbed-down RTS based on it, but still probably won't be as good as the original.
But the more likely reason is that they want to block any sequels to Alpha Centauri from being made in the first place. Not that Take 2 had any plans to do that, or they would have trademarked it otherwise.

My standard Anime Theme song game variant rules: [Censored by ACTA]If we're lucky, maybe they'll go "Screw you EA" and release Sid Meier's Proxima Centauri.
A remake of Sid Meier's game or something else?
