I just got into the epic sounding music from movie trailers. I think they actually categorize it as Epic Music. What got me into is "Heart of Courage," by Two Steps from Hell. Here's the song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LRLdhFVzqt4. I remember the song, but I forgot which trailer I heard it in. I also like "ASAP" among other songs, but thumbing around youtube, I also found music by Audio Machine that I liked. Not sure how long the music's been around but I love it. Anyone into it as well, and does anyone have any recommendations?

Close enough?

I think the term you're looking for is "film score".

lol oh all right, so it's just called a film score? That's the genre of music it would belong to? I just wanted to clarify before I embarrassed myself any further on the subject. Again, I'm fairly new to it, just wanted to find out what other artists are out there. And thanks for the suggestion, it was pretty good. Kind of got the adrenaline flowing a little.

Film score is just what it sounds like- the scores used in films. Just to get you started, some well-known modern film-score composers include John Williams, Hans Zimmer, and Clint Mansell. The link I posted is actually Symphonic Metal, which is a mix of heavy metal and film score- that particular song leans more towards the score side.

X-Ray Dog is very much up this sort of alley, if you haven't already listened to them.

Of course, film scores borrow a lot from Classical Music; I think the Baroque and Romantic eras would be more likely to have pieces that would be considered "epic".

oh ok, yea, I've listened to film scores in the past. I particular liked the score for Braveheart, I think by James Horner. I like John William's work for sure, the Star Wars films and did he compose Indiana Jones. Liked the Dark Knight and Last Samurai scores from Hans Zimmer. However I dont know who Clint Mansell is. Which films did he compose scores for?

Thanks for the suggestion Sunshinewerewolf. I'll definitely check out x-ray dogs on youtube. the werewolf, x-ray dog theme, is that coincidental?

And yea, film scores and trailer music may have borrowed alot from the Classical music, but as a casual listener, I don't mind. If I listen to it and I like it, that's all that matters to me. And I figure composers today are just trying to adapt to today's times, whatever gets them paid.

But I think while some trailers might use actual pieces from film scores, I don't think the music itself can be categorized as film scores, because they weren't composed with a particular film in mind. I could be wrong, I probably am, but is there anyone with knowledge on this subject matter that can clarify things?

2 Steps From Hell isn't really soundtrack/score music, I think it's mostly trailer music. Groove Addicts and ES Posthumous are similar.

Yeah, it's coincidental, my username comes from this:

Doesn't this count as epic music?

I'm not really sure whether this fits the style you're talking about here, but it's certainly epic. Highly recommended.

I have a firm belief that epic music is only valuable when it's rare. If music is food for the soul, an epic big piece bill be akin to a feast You cannot have feasts every day.

Having said that, have some epic garden music.

If you are still following this thread, there are some youtube channels that are EXCELLENT sources for discovering new Epic music.

https://www.youtube.com/user/DragonstarDT https://www.youtube.com/user/ThePrimeCronus https://www.youtube.com/user/epicmusicvn https://www.youtube.com/user/RogueOfAvatar/videos

Check the descriptions, especially in those 1 hour plus mixes and above - they usually have a list of songs, and the name of the artist that produced the song.

If you want an introduction into Epic Video Game Music, the London Symphonic Orchestra released an album called the Greatest Video Game Music - you should be able to find it on Youtube or Spotify or Deezer. Distant Worlds is another recommendation.

If you are really feeling adventurous, and need even more Epic music, Anime is the home of incredible volumes of amazing soundtracks, and I do not just mean Anime Openings or Endings.

Here are just two examples of what I mean: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WoHsBoYLnWc (Ready? - From the Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t2tGEiYU9KU (Madder Sky- Kotaro Nakagawa, From Code Geass) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kHt0VDZSQ7I (Carnage - Shirou Sagisu, From Rebuild of Evangelion 2.0) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DTgYbT2cGm4&list=PLC6lcrVIGg6r1umW9w1qvsLtTyZTKXoNw&index=29 ( Surgam Identidem - Yuki Kaijura, from Madoka Magica)
