On the plus side, I do find Shu quite interesting, mostly because I think I get his characterisation. Doormat in a repressive society finally gets a chance to do something extraordinary and leaps at the chance without considering the rights, the wrongs, and whether it's even a remotely good idea, promptly gets in way over his head, and tries to shut it out like he always has. So far, he makes sense to me and feels like a proper person, more so than, say, Lelouch Lamperouge. Also, the mecha here have a pretty cool concept to them.

On the minus side, lolevil foreign devils humiliating and infantilising Glorious Nippon, as others have mentioned.

On the immature sniggering side, I notice that this series appears to have inherited Code Geass's gratuitous ass shots along with everything else. Currently waiting for the BDSM fetishism to start creeping in again.

I don't see anything special about these mecha in particular.

This is starting to look like the anime version of James Cameron's Avatar mixed with Eureka Seven. From what I've heard though, the next episodes will focus on character development, so hopefully, I'll have a reason to care about these characters soon.

Edit: Also, I don't get how people think this series is a ripoff or similar to Code Geass. They couldn't be more different from each other. The only thing they share are superficial stuff and the same writing team (no, I don't consider this a good reason to compare the two works).

Yes, Your Majesty- I mean, Commander.

Am I the only one who was really impressed by Gai this episode? I mean, a random middle schooler out of nowhere steals the awesome power that was meant for him, and instead of being resentful/throwing a fit like any reasonable person would, he simply moves on and incorporates the change into his plan, and actually treats Shu decently. That's really good leadership right there.

Though I went WTF when they started the plan AFTER the hostages were killed. What the hell was up with that?!

Ah, you see, we wouldn't know they were really the bad guys unless we saw them kill the hostages. It's for the audience's convenience so we know for sure who are the good guys and the bad guys. Thus, we know they're the good guys because they let the hostages die.

Wait. Assholes.

Gai seemed calm to you when he told Shu about the situation? He seemed pretty pissed to me. "Oh god damn it you little idiot, you screwed the plan up. Well, I'm going to make you help us out in return."

After the thing was over he handled it well, but as you can see by the end of the episode he's not letting Shu go that easily.

Gai was pretty freakin' awesome this episode, just sayin'. But yeah, he did get quite angry, he just didn't let it mess with his head.

As for how it's similar to Code Geass, well... how should I put this...

I do agree that he got angry, at least when he was first confronting Inori, but the way he handled his emotions was very responsible of him as a leader, I feel. It's like, "this sucks big time, but I'm going to proceed anyway despite the Spanner in the Works, and it's not his fault anyway so I should be civil to him I guess". But yeah, you're right that he's pressing Shu into service against his will. Then again, I find that a reasonable, even the right thing to do. Since he DOES have the power that will give them an advantage over the enemy after all. It would be irresponsible of him to not try and recruit that power.

Also, maybe I'm just dense on something, but how did Gai know that the blonde crazy guy had that specific weapon in him? Is there like a list of people and what weapons are inside them or something?

The show isn't big on explaining things at the moment. Maybe we'll find out later when the story feels like laying out the plot.

I've heard (so this is second hand or third hand information) that how Gai knew what Daryl's void was going to be will be explained next episode. Have to admit that I like Gai a little more after this episode, having that many guns/missiles/what-have-you trained on you and once and just not caring it rather badass. Also rather impressed at the sword Shu pulled out of Inori, it cuts, it blocks missiles, let's him jump high and seems to mess with the mecha's cameras since they didn't have any good images of Shuu, now that's an all in one weapon.

If it has a plot then I have something to say about it!

I would be willing to bet that the "messes with cameras" part has more to do with the general energy he his putting out when using his ability than the sword (aka: it does not matter which weapon he has, cameras near him will not be able to record him.

By the way, "My Dearest" makes the best OP ever.

Though, to be fair, the only reason that it's #1 and not #2, is that the last time when Ryo's music blew my mind was technically an ED, ot an OP.

Daryl's void? Where did that crop up?

As for why they moved in after the first set of hostages died... well, it honestly didn't look like they could have saved them in time (the plan seemed to take some time to get going), there were plenty more lined up to be executed, and the enemy appeared to be distracted. Not the nicest decision, but an understandable one when nice didn't appear to be an option.

Ha, trying to outrun a Mech in a Jeep! That's pretty funny. And those are some really slow lasers.

How evil do you have to be to watch people you just grabbed off the street executed on camera? You'd have to be sick to set up something like that. The bad guys are too telegraphed as evil though.

In fact, the whole show is too telegraphed. Who didn't see the "New transfer student" thing coming?

It's amusing that while this show is not really like Code Geass in a lot of ways, it's like they've decided they're still using random notes from the Code Geass production.

For example, the the vortex when connecting to mechas looks awfully familiar, and I still laugh that they're calling the ability the "King's Power" or something like that. Meanwhile mysterious waif follows the protagonist around while he tries to keep up his ordinary school life.

Wasn't there an image released before the show even aired that suggested that?

Was there really? Nonetheless.

I also wonder what's up with the robots that they need people to completely mentally immerse themselves in them to control them. Who designed that? Why are the operators risking their lives?

Accoring to the OP, there will be at least 5 high scholl-based characters. That's interesting, I love it when there is a good school life/secret life dichotomy in a story.

Also, LOL at the scene where Tsugumi does the Minority Report thing with her butt.

It's a lot less risky than being inside the mech, especially since they've got a foolproof, push-of-a-button ejection system. It also has the advantage that you don't have to build your mech around a bulky crew compartment, enabling far greater design flexibility.

Not to mention that it allows people with harmed limbs to serve a purpose in fighting (note that the Rebel Ace Pilot is in a wheelchair when not controlling a mech/mechs)
