I always thought more info was revealed in the Wonderswan games or supplemental materials for the original series, but apparently info about it was released only very recently, in the Xros Wars manga.
I get the feeling that the writers had no idea what they were doing with some plot points.

Some kind of magical fairy Kari meets in episode 45. It sort of comes out of nowhere, gives a lot of exposition, and....disappears.

It's not just Xros Wars, the Digimon Adventure novels originally named it and provided some of the information that the Xros Wars manga uses. But those didn't have an official localisation and are still in the process of being fan translated.

Kari's Crest of Light has also been treated very differently from the other crests, and it's implied to have a much deeper connection to the Digital World than the others somehow.

All the other's are concepts, but Light seems to be more of a representation of Holy power in the digital world.
I didn't explain that well, but it's clearly something distinct from the other crests.

That is something that may serve as a start point for the possible deconstruction that is to come: now that TK and Kari have grown up, the power they can give to their partners has dwindled.
Considering that the power to digievolve comes from the emotions of the partner, another point would be the chosen children being forced to access to ALL of their potential: their light and their darkness.
Instead of focusing on relatives that divide us, we should find the absolutes that tie us.
I don't think Kari is at any risk of losing her strength because she is aging, after all she is the franchise's greatest example of Incorruptible Pure Pureness, to the point of even glowing once in a while. TK on the other hand, has issues.

She had issues in 02 specifically because of that. She broke down and said she couldn't handle being a Messianic Archetype. I think, it's been a while.

I've heard otherwise, that she along with Daisuke and Iori are "Dull and Boring".
I have always liked her, but its truly mindmelting to see how much people hate 02. Seriously, I always thought what I read from here was a bit whiny but other places seem to believe 02 is VIIIIIIIIIIIIIIILE.

What is anime? Anime is...only a weeaboo way of saying animation, really.
While 02 is not exactly my favorite season even I admit it has its good points and it is not something bad in any way. Maybe it is because I've grown up and started to understand more about the characters like Iori's tendency to see the world in shades of black and white. It is a season where not fully comprehending the characterization of some of the kids can diminish the appeal of the show. It is a fairly good season, just not something outstanding.
And by the way, Savers is the best the anime franchise has to offer in my eyes. I will have to disagree with the reviewer there.
