Bah. I can't post my story or the stories I'm recommending. Fiddlesticks. Well, anyway, I'll just post without linking to them, then!
(For the record, these are stories on FF.net.)
Fox Sannin's "Who Dares, Wins" is a pretty damn good fanfiction involving a female, red-haired "Naruko" who lived her life as a self-taught street urchin before being tracked down by the Third Hokage and recruited as a member of Team Guy (who, prior to her arrival, were having serious troubles with giggle, ditzy, non-ninja-like kunoichi who kept screwing up so badly that Guy was constantly dropping and replacing them). It's a surprisingly dark and realistic take on the ninja world, and even when it crosses back into canon territory with the Chunin Exams, it mixes things up so that you're getting something new out of it (the "Ten Questions" test is nowhere to be seen; its stand-in is actually a good deal more interesting).
While my initial impression was to expect "Naruko" to go into Mary Sue territory at some point, she's actually earned a place as one of my favorite fanfiction characters ever in the history of fanfiction characters. Mind, that isn't saying much, but trust me, she's worth reading about.
Another one I like is chancewriter's "The Way of the Geisha," in which Hinata was kidnapped by Kumo and lost at the age of three, re-appearing years later as a blind geisha whom Naruto encounters by chance during his journey with Jiraiya. This is a really good story, although the drama between Naruto and Hinata during the last couple of chapters seems a little over-the-top and forced.
I'm also interested in seeing what people think of my own fanfiction, so I guess I'll post it here. If any of you have feedback of a constructive nature, that'd be incredibly sexy. Most of what I get on FF.net are "cool keep going" reviews, which, while nice to have, don't exactly tell me much about how I can make my work better.
The story—"The Whims of Fate"—which I am writing under the handle of "Not Quite a Drifter"—is a standard "Alternate Naruto" storyline.
Note: Contrary to what half of the "oh my god your Naruto is so much better/funnier/cooler than canon!" reviewers seem to think, he's not better than canon Naruto, nor was that my intention. Actually I just wanted an excuse to practice characterizing something that was mostly my own creation, even if the basis for it is the backstory of the canonical Naruto. But anyway, I'm astounded by how many people in the Naruto section seem to dislike Naruto. It's sort of ironic, isn't it?
I also started a story called "It's Like Deja Vu All Over Again," but haven't found the motivation to update it past the first rather short chapter yet. It's another overdone idea on FF.net—involving "the character dies and gets to re-live their life again"—but I figured I'd play around with the idea and make it Sakura who gets a second chance... with a series of conflicting memories she can't make sense of. The idea of the story is more to provide a character study of Sakura herself than a story of Sakura going back and fixing her mistakes—a very glorified "Sakura looks back and wonders what she did wrong" kind of story. I'm not sure where I want it to go, which is why I haven't written anything else for it yet... but if y'all'd like to check it out and tell me whether or not you think the idea holds promise, that'd be great.
Does anyone know a good Sasuke-centric one in which he's portrayed as a totally broken and sad person (so pretty much an Uke) which is not Yaoi?
No, not really. I don't ay attention to Sasuke centric stories much, though.
Watch SymphogearI saw this fic recently Hakumei, it's a For Want of A Nail fic where Danzo kills the 3rd Hokage before the start of the series and Naruto is forced to flee Konoha along with Sasuke, Sakura, Sai, Neji and Hinata because they saw Danzo kill the 3rd. And later Gaara, Haku and Kimimaro join up with them. giving them a total of nine members and their group becomes known as Hakumei which means twilight.
It's pretty good, especially the character development, it starts off realistically and everyone's basically the same as in canon but with a few changes. And their life on the run is actually presented as pretty harsh.

The Newest Challenger by Kenchi618 seems good.
Maybe he'll add in a certain Guile Meme for humor.

Watch SymphogearJust read the available chapter of that. Seems enjoyable, though I know nothing about Street Fighter.
Shinigan (Naruto fanfic)The Whims of Fate is one of the better "Naruto gets a decent start" A Us, although it still suffers from everything going slightly too smoothly for him most of the time.
Ch 2 of The Newest Challenger just came out.
Along with some Rival Schools characters and Dan Hibiki. Now we just need Final Fight characters...

Watch SymphogearI recently started writing a Naruto crossover fic, in it Nagato ends up in the wonderful world of Puella Magi Madoka Magica.
If you're interested in reading it you can find it here.
...Naruto isn't a young girl. This completely defeats the point.

I was making a joke. Also, I apparently cannot read names.
It was never specified that only girls and women could become Puella Magi, you know.
Watch SymphogearWouldn't you assume that "Magical Girls" are, in fact, girls?
Currently taking a break from the site. See my user page for more information.{reads the Naruto entry in The Stations of the Canon}
Note to self, if I ever write a Naruto Fan-Fiction, I will have to include this line.
Naruto: On second thought, let's not go to the Land of Waves, it is a silly place.

Uh, speaking of things everyone days, took me ages to come up with a way of mostly avoiding the Chunin exams.
Yeah...I wrote one Wave arc, and then promptly started thinking of other things to do in my other planned fanfics. It's kind of boring as hell to write, given that nothing different ever happens. A Wave arc with some actual differences, as for instance in Better Left Unsaid by Kenchi618, is a rare and glorious thing.
Shinigan (Naruto fanfic)I got to skip Wave arc altogether, because my AU focuses on Squad Eight. That was nice.
The Ghost and the Darkness is a good non-yaoi Naruto/Sasuke fic. Plays with the idea of Kyuubi making young Naruto paranoid and insane. As in, scratch-head-till-it-bleeds insane. Young Sasuke notices him and things progress from there. It's a GEN fic, so no pairings. I suggest you give it a try. Kept me up for a few hours.
I did naht.White Rain just updated.
Holy flaming Juubi's balls, someone needs to write a trope page for this story.
Neither goony beard-men nor rainbow-haired she-twinks will stand in the way of my dreams!Kenchi618 is now doing Naruto/ Pokemon Crossover. No, seriously.
Watch SymphogearDude, pokemon is easily one of the least implausible series that can be crossed.
I'm a (socialist) professional writer serializing a WWII alternate history webnovel.
I will always have a huge affection for Genin due to each character having an awesome personal theme, the cool fights, inventive jutsu and the way it handled the Sasuke Naruto Sakura revenge dynamic. Granted it was originally made sometime in 2003 near the end of the Sasuke rescue ark way before the timeskip. Some idiot in the review section was bitching that Sasuke was OOC compared to how he was at the start of the timeskip even though the author mentioned how old the fic is. Addressing the post at the start of the thread about a Naruto RPG, I suggest checking out Narutod20 which has been going on since 04.
