Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

To keep the neighborhood "orderly" or some such.
And if you don't follow the rules it's possible you can ultimately be evicted.
Oh really when? What’s the status of paul’s Amendment getting passed? Will they do it to get his vote?
The discussion of neighborhood associations is probably better for the US Cultural Thread than the politics thread, but tldr, they're there to manage the neighborhoods' collective resources. For gated communities, this includes things like landscaping, pools, etc. For condos, it includes the building itself and things like parking garages, gyms, whatever.
When you buy a house/unit there, you also sign a contract saying that you'll abide by the homeowner's association rules and all that. If you refuse to sign, they'll refuse to sell. I'm not aware of the legality of this being challenged one way or another, but given that they're still around and pretty damn common in some parts of the country, I doubt they've been found to be unenforceable.
Really from Jupiter, but not an alien. Also forgot to mention this, as an aside for the survey, as I'm doing it right now. Since a good chunk of the lurkers here and regular posters identified as white, straight, and male, those who have the time: I'd like a Private Message of how you came to identify as liberal, and, more specifically to the point, "woke" on racial issues. I know I'm making a sweeping generalization, but there doesn't seem to be much pushback from white users on this site when race issues are called out, Trump and Trump voters racism, white privilege, etc. To me that's a good sign, that I'm confident in saying most of you are "woke" more than the average white male you'd meet out in public.
I'd like to ask you how you came to these views, what you think of your own privilege, was it hard to accept, did you tell others? Call out friends and families when they were being low-key racist?
Since this can get personal, I'll just keep it to P Ms, so that way I can read everyone's story individually, and then I can write an essay myself about how Tropers became aware of race and privilege, which I'll either post here, or on Medium.com, I haven't decided which yet.. The essay will be extremely general, of decent length and I will NOT name names, at all. I may say a specific story from one Troper to get a point across, but only that Troper, and myself will know that the story came from them.
If any minority tropers want to PM their own story of becoming aware of racial issues, you're more than welcome to PM me, but I'll write a separate essay for that.
Just please when you PM, make explicitly clear your Ethnicity, Gender, sexuality, and region you live in.
Would appreciate any all submissions.
New Survey coming this weekend! What are these associations even for?

"For all those whose cares have been our concern, the work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives, and the dream shall never die."@Fox: Does that include outside-the-US tropers?
"All you Fascists bound to lose."(Wonders about the same thing)
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanYes your included too
New Survey coming this weekend!I might send something, when do you want it by?
Also, Trump's approval rating is up to 40%, largely buoyed by his hurricane response (so, a temporary thing, especially if the long term response gets botched) and possibly North Korea.
http://www.cnn.com/2017/09/21/politics/trump-approval-40-percent-hurricanes-north-korea/index.html
A rather minor boost, and 40% is of course still atrocious for a president in his 1st year.
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.Speaking of hurricanes, assuming that none of them catches my attention tomorrow I may write such a PM as Tactical Fox 88 asked for.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanHopefully its just a disaster boost, and Trump the Russian investigation mostly staying behind the scenes.
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.I thought that his approval rating may get a boost.
I liked it better when Questionable Casting was called WTH Casting AgencyGiven that botching the disaster relief means thousands will suffer, I'm not hoping that happen just so Trump gets a popularity drop. The botching is also more likely to happen in the territorial islands, where the citizens don't get to vote on president because hello, archaic laws AND lack of push for statehood.
I'll just post here for my personal story. Strait, White, British, male. Fox you can PM me if you want more info.
Honestly racial issue in the UK are very different to in the US, they certainly exist but a lot of racism that I've seen in my time is focused on other white people, specifically Eastern European immigrants. Now racism against South Asian people is certainly a thing in the UK (alongside racism against black people, racism against Eastern Europeans, etc...) but honestly I grew up pretty isolated from it. I grew up in a little English village and then went to boarding school outside a small English town.
But my school was an international school, with around a third of the kids being East Asian, the only incident of racism I can remember was a joke being made that a new polish kid was going to steal the job of one of the teachers.
Since then... my social circle isn't that large and has basically always been of mixed nationalities, at college it was mixed antionalities, at uni it was mixed nationalities (and basically consisted of the LGBT society) and I currently work in the London bar trade, which is made up largely of mixed nationalities from across Europe.
I couldn't say when I woke to race as a political issue, I learnt about it as a political issue the same way I learnt about every political issue, by being actively engaged in politics since age 14 (age 10 if you couldn't my school being a democratic school as political engagement).

“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ Cyran@rationalinsanity at anytime where you have time to write anything lengthy. The essay won't be written until November as I have to shift through a lot of data and pick up key words and patterns among others.
And thanks Silaw appreciate the story. Will file it with the others
New Survey coming this weekend!Dunno if the original story about this was ever brought up but:
A Trump Supporter at Transylvania University apparently started a campaign to get a DACA student at the school deported, with posts on Facebook like "Everyone go report this illegal at my school." He has since been expelled himself.
Also, for Tactical, I myself didn't start paying much attention to politics until my early 20s (currently 34). My first experience was the California gubernatorial recall election that saw Schwarzenegger become governor. At the time I lived with my girlfriend and her family, a conservative Mormon household. They had one family friend in particular who was so any liberal I can quote her as saying even moderates are cowards.
The sheer lack of thought that went into that mindset got to me, and still does today. The same thing applies to my brother, a man I otherwise highly respect. A result is I would up playing Devil's Advocate because, to me, someone had to. Over time, watching the Republican party descend into that same "DEMOCRATS BAD!" mindset keep me firmly liberal as I regard them as the reasonable/competent side of the aisle.
Liberal beliefs tend to appeal to me more in a lot of ways. Though I typically value competence above all else. I don't have to agree with the President, but I'd like to at least know they know what in the hell they're doing.

From today's WTFJHT feed:
What’s the status on the aca repeal efforts? Last I heard they were trying to get either murkowski or Collins on board
That's already the case. They weren't in the agreement before because they felt it didn't do enough. The US officially became the least climate-conscious country in the world when Trump decided to back out.

It's things like this that make me ashamed to be an american.
@fruitpork There's this story from yesterday i saw and hadn't seen mentioned
Insurers Come Out Swinging Against New Republican Health Care Bill
https://mobile.nytimes.com/2017/09/20/us/politics/insurers-oppose-obamacare-repeal.html
x4 I saw a Yahoo Video that had an interview with her, and she basically said she was 'leaning no'. Considering she hasn't voted yes once, however, I think it's safe to say she will not vote yes for this.
