There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Trump's aides are continuously telling reporters about Trump's poor handling of embarassments

I have disagreed with her a lot, but comparing her to republicans and propagandists of dictatorships is really low. - An idiot

The Badlands National Park Service is apparently openly defying the gag order and tweeting about climate change.

First of all, fucking A, good for them. Second of all, watch that space. It's unfortunately safe to say that repercussions will be coming.

[up][up][up] That might be why he wants to shut up several organizations both from the Press and from Congress: They'll talk about how insane and easily angered Trump and his Cronies are.

[up][up] Good for them. If I had any money, I'd donate to them simply to show my support.

@Badlands National Park Service MOA (and like hell it's not a MOA!): If/When we survive this hopefully brief period of insanity and disaster, the next POTUS had better give these guys the most prestigious medals and honors applicable to their actions. STICK IT TO THE WHITE TYRANTS, PEOPLE! If you're going down, then better go down fighting and flipping the bird as hard as you can!

[up] Definitely. If we make it through all this, we're sure as shit going to remember who was one whose side. We're going to remember what the GOP turned themselves into, and hold them accountable. We're going to remember the spineless Democrats who did nothing, and hold them accountable. And we're going to remember the people on both sides who look up, saw what was happening, went "OH SHIT" and rushed to lead La Résistance. And we're going to elect them and pin medals on their goddamn chests.

@Krieger
I doubt that many leftists were reading smears against Hillary "copied verbatim from Breitbart", especially considering that most of the criticisms of her on the left are completely different from those on the right.

@henry42: Not copied verbatim from Breitbart — rather, copied from the mainstream media, which chewed on every little tidbit coming out of Wikileaks and everything that "leaked" from the Congressional and FBI investigations into all of Clinton's faux-scandals, which were themselves prompted by information from Breitbart and Infowars.

CNN devoted more than three times the coverage to all of the scandals than it did to matters of actual policy substance, treating Clinton's emails like some breathlessly important controversy whilst at the same time talking about Trump's quite genuine misbehavior as if it was a bunch of locker room pranks. In all the election coverage by the major networks, zero time was given to climate change. Zero.

Hmh. It's easy to forget that Google took over the world a few years ago. And Trump wishes he could be in anywhere near as good a position to control information as they are.

Donald Trump's aides are talking about how he can't handle embarrassing stories.

And we're gonna get more.

The president is a 70-year-old child whose TV time must be closely monitored — because any news story that upsets his ego will trigger a temper tantrum followed by irrational demands that his indulgent, overwhelmed guardians will be helpless to refuse.

Or so Donald Trump’s aides keep confiding to the nearest available reporter.

On Sunday, one of the president’s confidantes told Politico that his staffers have to “control information that may infuriate him,” a task made difficult by the fact that the leader of the free world “gets bored and likes to watch TV.”

Nearly a dozen of Trump’s closest confidantes helped plant an embarrassing news story about how their boss can’t handle embarrassing news stories. Which is to say: A president who prizes loyalty in his subordinates has already been betrayed by a huge swath of his inner circle.

But we aren’t in the late days of a losing campaign, when it’s normal for advisers to start leaking dirt on the boss to save their reputations. We’re less than four full days into the Trump presidency, with (barring death, impeachment, resignation, or coup) at least 1,461 to go.

Fun! Check the article for more juicy details, along with links to other articles with even more!

Then the 11th hour "MORE EMAILS" from comey, breaking all kinds of procedure. So the "Both Sides Are Just As Bad" was definitely reinforced by the whole "Welcome to CNN, for the next half hour we're not gonna shut up about emails and the stupid thing trump said today"

[up][up][up][up] Wow, full-on Bad Boss to his own minions already.

... I know we're not supposed to trope real life, but I really could use a list of tropes for a fictional version of Trump since he's already proven himself as fully intent on being President Evil within less than a week of his inauguration. I fully expect a steady trend of fanfics over the next few years that will spare no expense at inserting Take Thats against him and the GOP, even if the USA is neither the setting of the fic nor of much if any importance to the plot.

So it looks like Trump's gonna be escalating this feud with the Media. That's a battle neither side can afford to lose- because the only way Trump can lose it is if the people around him decide to stop indulging him. And when nobody in the White House takes the President seriously, well, that's basically a failed term.

But I feel like the Media hasn't quite realized that the White House is now their enemy yet, and that's dangerous.

@henry42: You're way too innocent for this sinful earth, you know. There was little or no factual substance to any of the investigations into Clinton that occurred during Obama's administration, and even the most fanatical digging by Congress and the FBI couldn't come up with the slightest culpable act. So where did the information come from?

It's one of the oldest tricks in the propaganda warfare book: plant ideas in the public consciousness that they then run with as their own, utterly unconscious of the source. But we have actual evidence — Rachel Maddow dug up the book, and there were documented statements from FBI insiders that it was used as the basis for recommending investigations.

It's the same with Wikileaks: we know that the Russians conducted hacks on both the Republican and Democratic campaigns, but the only information released was harmful to Democrats. Despite this tactic, obvious to anyone who's seen a movie or read a book more complicated than Care Bears, the MSM and the left eagerly ate up every new manufactured scandal.

None of this would have been possible without the left wing so anxiously hoping for anyone but Hillary to run even before she announced her candidacy, as if a person who's devoted forty years to public service and has more qualifications than anybody for the office is somehow not good enough.

Y'know, Eliezer Yudkowsky is wrong, and Michael Bay is right. People don't expect fictional characters to be smart, because they themselves are not smart. It is only a small subset of the public that has enough awareness to notice blatant plot holes.

I mean, I'm not sure what's gonna happen. I just know the situation described in that article is not a stable one. Will the media buckle under pressure from Trump? Will Trump start firing people at random, resulting in a public meltdown? Will the GOP get sick of him, or rally behind him?

[up]Yes, it's a meaningless insult if used in the way they use it, and an inaccurate one if used literally.
