Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Some people just don't get the concept of parody it seems
Well you weren't seriously expecting them to buy those dirty foreign-made planes, were you?
"Yup. That tasted purple."Besides, EADS had withdrawn because they were afraid of technology transfer.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanAnd that the aircraft had to built in the USA — it's not worth it for Airbus to transfer A380 production there, especially for a small number for airframes. So Airbus refused to bid.

Keep Rolling OnBreaking news from CNN (no link yet): Mitt Romney won't be pursuing a third Presidential run in 2016.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"http://abc13.com/politics/former-gop-nominee-romney-will-not-run-for-president-in-16/497620/
"We're all paper, we're all scissors, we're all fightin' with our mirrors, scared we'll never find somebody to love."Could be strategic. He'd split the bill with Bush and possibly let one of the more extreme candidates clean through. It's more likely personal, his family did not like the last campaign.
So Romney divorced one of his many wives?
It has always been the prerogative of children and half-wits to point out that the emperor has no clothesx6 Did I just hear a couple conspiracy theories take flight?
Eating a Vanilluxe will give you frostbite.we do have a conspiracy theories thread, ask if they find anything

Bumbleby is best ship. busy spending time on r/RWBY and r/anime. Unapologetic Socialist
I'm calling at least one "Mark of the Beast" theory, and a handful of New World Order theories in response to that idea.
"Why would I inflict myself on somebody else?"Regarding the Hitler Rants: There's a time and a place to showcase satire, or share a joke you think is funny. At a town meeting that gets broadcast online does not seem to be the place or the time.
It just goes into the "just because you can't doesn't mean you should" box. And politicians at all levels really ought to be aware of that.
Law question: If an arms company was selling to civilians by pushing New World Order & related conspiracy theories, what grounds would the FBI (or some other agency?) have to investigate them?
Direct all enquiries to Jamie B GoodLike they were using fear of the UN seizing their guns as a marketing tool?
Don't people already do that?
Oh really when?Conspiracy theories are protected by the First Amendment.
(This is for a story, if you didn't figure it out)
The government has evidence that the company is linked to a terrorist group that espoused a similar ideology.
EDIT: Also, assuming they have a mechanism for doing so, the FBI is keeping the investigation under wraps.

Direct all enquiries to Jamie B GoodIf they have evidence then that's ground right there to have some guys go in and start putting bullets in heads and kidnapping people.
Oh really when?Oh, and did I mention that both the arms company & the terrorist group are part of a conspiracy to destroy the US government and establish a One Nation Under Copyright?
Direct all enquiries to Jamie B GoodWell really none of the 3 letter organizations need any real reason to do anything. They do what they want and legality means nothing to them. If they need justification they'll fabricate it. Look at the CIA reports that came out recently.
If the FBI wants to investigate these people they'll do it, if the NSA to tap all their communications they'll just go right ahead and if the CIA wants to start kidnapping and interrogating people they need no real excuse.
There's a lot of ways companies can do really shady shit legally through loopholes in country but hiding from 3 letter groups is not one of them. Nobody can do that.

Oh really when?I imagine that such a conspiracy would have moles in various parts of the government and especially the three-letter agencies, as by my reckoning they would pose the greatest threat to their plans.
Direct all enquiries to Jamie B GoodHow would they get them in there in the first place though? And how would the CIA and the NSA not immediately know and not put a bullet in their head?
See the big problem with a lot of these kind of stories is that frankly terrorists don't have the resources or connections to do most of the things they do in fiction.
The only people with the kind of power to put moles in the US government would be groups like GRU and the KGB and they're not stupid enough to do anything besides quietly listen and take notes to send back home.

Oh really when?To be fair, this is a pretty big conspiracy, more like something out of Deus Ex than just a bunch of people in a basement.
Direct all enquiries to Jamie B GoodKGB acquired several sources within the U.S. government. Joe McCarthy's problem were his methods, not, in fact, his overall accusation (though he was aiming a bit higher than the actual level of penetration the Soviets had). Trouble is that such recruitment is difficult.
A Galveston City Council member is under fire for showing a Hitler Rant at a recent meeting in order to make light of the government's bureaucracy.
