The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

You know, over here, getting caught plagiarizing is usually followed by loosing the position/stepping down...

Gotta be some kind of pork barrel spending idea in here somewhere.

Why would you need a lobbyist specifically for bacon? That's just one of the weirdest job descriptions I have ever heard.

...what I don't get is wht he thought he could bring a gun into a congressional office building. That seems like a sure recipe to get shot, arrested, or shot then arrested.

Because 2nd Amendment rights? The state has no right to infringe on his right to bear arms? Etc etc etc.

IT'S A CONGRESSIONAL OFFICE BUILDING. Why the heck would he think anyone but the security personnel would be allowed to be armed? Second Amendment has nothing to do with this...

And a Democrat will take 49 states (maybe Utah or Alabama or Mississippi will say otherwise) at the least, maybe outdo Reagan and Nixon and take the whole country.

Actually, it's BECAUSE it's a congressional building he's allowed to have his guns.

Although, if congressional buildings are privatized-that is, rented from private individuals-then he'd have less of a leg to stand on.

Not because he blew it off with a shotgun either.

Nah, I bet the poor idiot forgot he had it on his person or something.

Nobody is stupid enough to try and smuggle guns into D.C.

In the last 24 hours I have found there is a 'Sandy Hook' conspiracy movement- it was all staged to get gun control. I am incredibly angry, and disgusted by these nasty little wankers - and I British, so it doesn't materially affect me.

Yeah, I found out about that almost right away and was filled with the same sort of fury. Personal info time: I live in upstate NY right by the NY-CT border, and was working in Sandy Hook when it happened. It was a temp job at a call center in a former watermill that had been converted into a 3 or 4 floor office space building. I remember going into town that down, and wondering in frustration how a 1 stop light podubnk town could always have as much traffic as they always seemed to... and then I heard the helicopters and looked up and knew something bad had happened, although I didn't hear about it until I talked with a customer during the course of call and he told me about a shooting in an elementary school around 60 miles north of NYC, and I knew it had to be there and felt like I'd just been kicked in the gut.

I was at that job for another month and a half before leaving, during which time I saw the memorials sites on the streets, the people walking around in shock, the local shops closed out of grief, etc. Sandy Hook conspiracy theorists, like most conspiracy theorists, need to pull their heads out of their own asses. And if they're unable to do so, they're more then welcome to kiss mine.

It's really time to dump Cuomo.

When he was up for election, I was one of the NY liberals thinking to myself "Anyone but Cuomo, please, anyone but Cuomo." When he got the Democratic nomination, I intended to sit out the election, except that his opponent was a Tea Party asshole, so I felt compelled to hold my nose and vote for Cuomo, even though I didn't think he was in any danger of losing. The first year or two I thought I'd been too hard on him, but he's worked overtime ever since then to convince me that my early thoughts about him were right.

@Ace Of Spades: Bacon is an industry. Industries have lobbyists.

(The cheese lobby is even bigger, though, because it's actually being funded by the USDA with taxpayer dollars.)

Is bacon really a seperate industry, though? I mean, is there any company that manufactures just bacon, not any other meat products?

I find myself in the same position as Ricks although I started more to the right than he says he did. IMHGO it's not so much that I've moved to the left in economic matters (I was never a right winger on social matters) although I have but more that the conservative movement has gone batshit insane. It started in the 90s when Clinton won a second term and has progressively gotten worse since then. IMHGO I didn't leave conservatism, it left me.

One thing that's been bothering me are these people claiming that the FAA's flight embargo to Israel is somehow political, given what JUST HAPPENED in Ukraine.

[up][up][up]A quote attributed to him, although I've heard it attributed to others was "I didn't leave the Democratic Party it left me." because he felt it had gone too far to the left. My statement was a deliberate reversal.

Scott Walker refused to accept federally funded highspeed rail, causes the state to be on the line for hundreds of millions of dollars.

“Walker claimed that he opposed the 100% federally funded train because of the annual operating costs to the state, which amounted to around $7 million. But now the state is on the line for as much as $118 million, for which it will have received nothing at all. In other words, for the dollars the governor has put at risk, the state could have funded the new train operation for about a decade and a half.”
