Definitely - that is an ill-looking trope if I ever clapped eyes on one, poor lambkin. It needs putting out of its misery, and merging with Arthur. True, its an Arthur wearing un-Arthur-like jade shades, so maybe its an Only Sane that's got lost, rather.

Please note: one reason why Only Sane is often not a Dent... is 'cos s/he may think s/he is the brightest bulb in the room, and, therefore, specially entitled to snipe. Dents are usually too occupied and/or nice to snipe. And have way too much common sense to think they're the resident genius.

Moving on: maybe Sanity Anchor Man is too close to Only Sane for comfort, now that I think about it. Sanist Common Denominator? Captain Common Sense? Actually... come to think... Sanest Uncommon Denominator might be closer, if too long. tongue Yup, playing with words: my default setting.

PS: couldn't drift off, for some reason. grin

Can I put "Merge with Fantastically Indifferent" on the crowner? I mean, I know its not a page action crowner, but still.

Man, there's so much to be sorted with this trope. I'm getting the feeling that the two should be merged no matter what; maybe the rename crowner should be switched out for a page action one so we can get some other stuff figured out first.

Yup - good thread, in short. If what you started opens a can of worms, it needed pointing out in the first place. wink

Both names using it are pretty bad anyway. Also, just edit it to sanest instead of complaining about it.

So. Like, Staunchly Normal. We're not worried about people listing, like, the Dursleys from Harry Potter, right?

Rhymes with "Protracted."

I agree its a concern. I'd also say that having sanity or common sense in there is misleading as well. A sane man, confronted with the supernatural, would freak out. The defining.feature of this trope (if nothing other than Fantastically Indifferent ), Is that they don't freak out because of weird things.

I went over the examples in The Everyman, and I'm liking the idea of shoving them all into subtropes, and moving the Normal People index onto it instead. Should we deal with that before or after the rename to this trope?

Uh - dunno. Perhaps standing back and letting voting go on here is a good idea, while we try to clean the definitions up in another thread is a good thing...

For reference on the 10/25 crowner:

11 potential renames, 51 votes. So less than 5 votes per name. Could use a few more opinions.

I think Unfazed Normal has been added, but Crowner appears stable.

The page is written well enough to convey what it actually means, regardless of what the trope is named. Stumbling upon this for the first time on a tropes list will make you go what, but upon reading the page it should clear it up almost instantly from the first line.

Empirical evidence has repeatedly proven that a large number of editors do not read the page, only the title.

Seriously, I find myself saying this so much that I'm start to think it should be added to Predefined Messages. The title is overwhelmingly the most critical part of a trope in determining whether it's misused or not, and the most clear definition possible will not save a trope with a bad name.

So, I believe the order of work we have is the following:

  • create Unfazed Everyman and move the trope there.
  • holler for a mod to move subpages. (Discussion could be deleted)
  • transfer wicks and check them for accuracy.
  • make The Arthur Dent a redirect and holler for a mod to shift this thread's link to Unfazed Everyman.
  • discuss the description and possibility of merging Fantastically Indifferent and possibly making a linked trs thread for that that one.
  • lock this thread and start a new one for The Everyman

Do I have it right?

Almost, mods move the discussion. All the other subpages anyone can move.

Ahhh, I had checked the discussion and it was a to-do note, so I figured it could be deleted. But we can move all the other subpages?

I did the first two, except for the discussion.

(just as a note, due to The Arthur Dent and Arthur Dent being linked to, there are over 600 wicks to clean)

I'd be happy to clean the wicks. I really dislike the old name.
