SOE just finally released planetside 2 info!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XBCp_rgAkfc Trailer here.

Apparently, according to the guy at the SOE fanfair, instead of just bases being contested, so will land, which can be used to earn resources over time, which lets you purchase upgrades.

They want to focus more on sandbox, and even allow outfits maybe the ability to make their own bases!

It will use something similar to Eve Online's EXP system, I'm not sure of the details.

Class based system that anyone can switch at will, with certificate trees. Need more details.

I wont lie, I am hyped as hell. Not a fan of the iron sights or sprinting, but otherwise it looks fantastic.

On the Class System The skill tree and classes go hand in hand, you can switch between roles as often as you want depending what is needed at the time. Things like weapon attachments will be based on the skill tree. Also you will be able to queue up 24 hours of skills to train so you can train your characters offline. However there will still be battle rank involved which will prevent you from training all skills unless you advance in battle rank. Skill training will also occur quicker when you are online.

On Resource Collection On a continent you will have multiple regions that can be captured that have specific resources tied to them. Some areas may be more rich in rare resources some in common materials. Auraxium will be one of the rare resources that can be obtained. You will be able to unlock secondary weapons such as mortar cannons and AA guns on tanks. You will do this based on resources collected by your empire or outfit. Resources will make gameplay more strategic, for example denying resources to empires to gain an advantage.

On Outfit Customization Outfits will have skill trees also that will be customizable. Outfits can spec specifically to increase certain aspects such as focusing on being an air cavalry outfit, or infiltry and max outfits.

On long term plans. There will be a three year plan for Planet Side 2 for all of the players to review and and provide feedback. Based on feedback the plan could be changed or moved around.

On Game Focus It's about giving back to the players, SOE wants to make Planet Side 2 for the players who have stuck to the game for years, and the hardcore players who participate day in and day out.

On the scale of gameplay There will be multiple continents in the game just as with the original Planet Side. Down the road there will even be multiple worlds.

On gameplay systems There will be an extensive mission system in Planet Side 2 to assist in coordinating Planet Side 2 combat on a much larger scale than seen in Planet Side 1.

On the Territorial Control Systems Due to the structure of the systems there will be a large variety of heavily contested areas such as large forests. Large and open areas could be conquered entirely with vehicles, this goes for air and ground vehicles. Much of the territorial control system will be based similarly on bases where if you capture a base or structure you own the territory. There will be bonuses to capturing territories that are connected. It will also add more vertical gameplay to the game.

On the pace of Gameplay Moment to moment pacing for Planet Side 2 is much faster than Planet S Ide 1.

On external access to data Most data will be accessible from outside so webapps can b built on top of the game. Services such as signature generators and statistic pages could be built around the data feeds.

On urban combat. There will be "Urban Like" combat in Planet Side 2.

On the Flight Model They want skill based vehicle driving to play a much larger role in Planet Side 2. There will be much more advanced flight mechanics with barrel roles and flips. Real skill will be required to fly vehicles so quality pilots will be in demand

That. Sounds. AWESOME!!!

Hope combat isn't too fast and frenetic. Don't want this turning into fucking Unreal Tournament or Counter-Strike style bunny hopping bullshit combat.

I dont think we have to worry about that. They said it WILL be faster paced though.

Also saddened by the lack of responses. I thought Planetside would be a bit more popular.

Yay for more Planetside! The most awesome MMOFPS ever.

I have fond memories of the first one, even though I absolutely sucked

Seriously can't believe this isn't a bigger thread.

Stop playing pokemon/touhou you drones!

Sounds pretty amazing, really. Ironsights/sprinting just seems to be the natural evolution for FPS's these days, can't really fight it, might as well go with it.

I think I'll be playing this every single day after its release.

This is how an MMO should be, not just running around by yourself murdering boars.

I get all tingly just thinking about dropping in with hundreds of other infantry from troop carriers. Keeping an eye on this. Should definitely try and get some Tropers together, that's if anyone here actually plays it.

This game sounds really awesome! I never played the first one, but I love the concept, and I hope that this game won't be too unforgiving to newbies.

When this comes out, us Tropers ought to get as many people on these forums to sign up as we can and form our own platoon.

Also, there's an ongoing Q and A series where Matt Higby answers the Planetside Universe forums community's questions. They're recorded in this google doc which is updated as he replies. It provides some interesting answers.

Being a veteran of the first Planetside AND a long-time fan, I've got opinions of my own.

Played Planetside since the Alpha, very excited for PS 2.

I hope that as someone who's still subscribed, that'll get me into beta. I'm probably one of the only TR with almost a decade of service ribbons.. Just a little bit more..

Speaking of which, I wish I could keep that ribbon and let the years keep counting. Maybe based on the fact that most of the media that's been released is of TR, there's more devs out there favoring us as a faction, perhaps we can better compete with the noobhammer and the lagsher now...

I had several TR toons, was with Jerriths Roughnecks in Alpha and Beta, and skipped around a few different outfits during retail, was on Markov before the merge. Probably the most noteworthy was Mercenaries.

Edit: I'm sort of concerned about if adding more complex hitboxes, the physx engine, and more wreckage will overburden the engine too much. I guess that's what testing will be for, but it's a concern I have.

Yes, yes, enjoy your noobhammer. We'll get by just fine with our much more awesome sounding and much less overpowered MCG.

Realistically, at least they aren't the Vanu. Aside from the Magrider(The main gun on that bitch is awesome for accurate long distance fire.. Even against aircraft..) I never found the VS to have any redeeming qualities. I mean NC armor looks lame, but at least you guys have some cool guns. I used to loathe the Phoenix if I was defending a base surrounded by hills.

The Vanguard was pretty cool, although the Prowler was versatile as hell.

My personal favorite were always the TR Max's though, I had the record for the most flakmax kills for such a long time. Anchored Burster AA MAX on base defense = awesome. I always thought it was so stupid that they kept switching between the Pounder and Dual Cycler MAX's from being Anti Infantry and Anti Armor, the Pounder used to be so OP for tower battles when it had an actual AOE on the grenades and then they went and got rid of the splash almost completely and made it anti-vehicle..

Coolest vehicle imho, Marauder.

I did have an NC toon on Emerald for when I felt like playing the game on easy.

Bah, you caveman TR and NC. Mags were the best, and our AA was perfect for MAX sniping. Your deployed TR MA Xs were like free kills! [lol]

Anyway, I kinda hope beta is also about being someone who played for a long time. I dont play anymore because neither does my guild, and I cant afford the monthly fee right now, but I've played for like 6 years.

That has to mean SOMETHING, right?

Donno how they are going to figure out who to add, but I hope they keep the ribbons and let some of them flow over.

I want my One Decade ribbon for TR :P

I wasn't really planning on checking this game out, having assumed that it would be using a subscription service, but now that it may be free to play, my interest in it has grown.

Free to play?

Uh oh...

Somehow I dont think SOE is as awesome as Arenanet in their No Monthly Fee model.

I'd rather pay monthly for Planetside anyway and just have all the features.

Honestly, I got more enjoyment out of that game than any other in my two decades of computer gaming.

I've been hearing about this recently... seems pretty good, and they look to be going with having a lot of the paid stuff be armor customization and such, which is nice. No weapons or anything being sold in the store.

Heard about Planetside after it was dead, sadly, but it sounded like a game I really wanted to play. Hoping Planetside 2 is good.

Bumped because I too only learned of Planetside after its collapse, and I'd love to see this concept do well, whether I decide to pay for it or not.

God damn it, of all the times to not bother remembering my SOE Station account info...

To make matters worse, when I attempted to reset my password, the new password didn't seem to work. Worst of all, I have to wait 24 hours for another attempt.

Before you ask "Why not just make a new account?", it's because there's apparently benefits to those who sign up for beta using an account that has Planet Side.

EDIT: Okay, figured out the problem I had this whole time, made obvious when I couldn't even log into my temporary account! SOE Station accounts have a 15-character maximum...but there is nothing stopping you from entering a longer password both in the account creation and login screens.

On account creation, it just truncates the extra characters. On login, it gets rejected.

Said 15-character limit wasn't even obvious until after I looked at the Planet Side 1 new account screen and saw that bit under the password field.

All of that said, I've finally signed up for the beta. It's a closed beta under NDA, though, so don't expect me to talk about it too much in here.

Posting this because we got some shiney new news.

Planetside Universe has been awesome for following info on this game, I'd recommend it if you want to keep updated. It's pretty much the official unofficial community site. It has a wiki, but last I checked it wasn't in that good of shape yet.

I don't know if I mentioned this, but I'm definitely going Terran Republic. Hope to see ye guys on there, either as allies or enemies!

Edit: Made it readable

BETA KEY!

PC Gamer is giving out a free priority access beta key for Planetside 2 in their April issue. This puts you in the same line as vets and Fan Faire attendees, apparently, so if you're really excited, never played Planetside and can't go to Fan Faire (like me), pick up a copy of PC Gamer.

This is for physical copies, to be exact. Newsstand and people who get it in the mail. Goes on the stands Feb 28. And now I sound like an advertisement.

(story found on Planetside Universe)
