Critics seem to like this game. In fact, they like it A LOT more than 8.

So I've noticed. Looks like Mario Party 9 is definitely a return to form!

Classic Mode is confirmed to be NOT in this game. Sorry!

=( Still looks worthwhile to play through though. Playing with the CP Us might actually be fun now.

Luck based minigames are GONE.

I am in favor of no more luck based mini-games. Though it does sadden me in a fashion, because it means my mom has less chance of winning. Yes, I root for my mom and have a tendency to go soft on her. What can I say?

Also, playable Kamek? That is weird. But no playable Shy Guy in Story Mode makes me =(. Shy Guy was the character I was most looking forward to playing as, though I would probably stick with my "mains" (some form of Toad or, if Toad[ette] isn't available, Yoshi) most of the time.

I want some footage of more of the mini-games, though. I still can't sell myself on the new board concept, but I do want to see those games...

Is there a playable Donkey Kong or is he still relegated to NPC status?

You guys want gameplay footage? How about the first 10 minutes of the game? This should really give you a feel of what the game's gonna be like.

Hmm, the free-for-all minigames play a lot more like Battle Minigames now, what with the minigame still going on even if there is a clearly defined "winner." And the reason Shy Guy and Kamek aren't playable is because they're acting as the mole in Story Mode. They seem to have the most aggressive AI, which makes sense since they're the bad guys. I have no idea what happens if the others get the most mini-stars. Presumably something else happens since they only mentioned that you lose if Kamek or Shy Guy gets the most mini-stars. Minigames don't happen every 4 turns, but it seems like they happen enough that it's not going to be long stretches of nothing.

Hmm, pokecapn did an hilarious LP of the 8 Mario Party games. I wonder what an LP of Mario Party 9 would be like since they would have to work together.

THOUGHT-TYPE THINGS:

  • Shy Guy! <3 Also, is that the yellow Toad from NSMB Wii?
  • I am fine with the idea of condensing stars and coins into one "resource." Although it does make me slightly wary, because it seems like upsets would be a bit too, well, upsetting since you're losing everything at once, but it also doesn't look like that happens to much here.
  • I am good with the idea of averting Second Place Is for Losers in the mini-games. I like the idea that you still win stuff for second place.
  • I'm ambivalent leaning toward good at the idea that you can choose the mini-game while landing on a space. I like it because it sucks getting nothing but games you're bad at, and because it also sucks playing the same game three or more times in one game. But on the downside, you could get people continuously spamming games they know they can win. I mean, if they let me do that in other Mario Party games, we'd probably play nothing but Dizzy Dancing (because that's probably the one mini-game in all of Mario Partydom at which I am the undisputed master).
  • In the previews I'd seen, there were a lot of mini-games that looked really fun, but the ones in this preview here seem kind of run-of-the-mill. Maybe luck of the draw didn't favor them and they just got stuck with the bleh games, but I'm wondering where the cool-looking games went.
  • I still can't get into the board design at all. Sure, the luck-based minigames are gone, but the board seems even more luck-based than ever. Plus, the fact that there are potentially long droughts without a mini-game makes me kind of wary and a little disappointed.

Overall, I think I'm kind of feeling toward it the way I feel towards Mario Party 4: The mini-games look good (I think), but no love for the board design at all. I'll probably rent it, but I don't know if it's a buy.

Incidentally, there are special dice blocks. Some net you super high numbers. (8-9-10) While others can prevent you from moving a single space at all. (0-1) Really useful if you're gonna get a lot of mini-ztars or if you don't want to land on certain spaces, like an unlucky space.

Playable Kamek = Instant Buy for me.

Kamek has always been my favorite Mario character, and I've never been quite sure why...

You know the Mario Party 2 costumes? I kinda associated every character with a board based on their respective costumes in official art (Mario = Western Land, Luigi = Space Land, Peach = Mystery Land, Yoshi = Pirate Land, Wario = Space Land, DK = Horror Land).

Now that years have passed, I tend to associate the characters with a different board in Mario Party 2 (Mario = Space Land, Luigi = Horror Land, Peach = None so she get's Western Land, Yoshi = Pirate Land though you could make a case for Space Land, Wario = Pirate Land, DK = Mystery Land).

And Bowser was truly a dick in the first one!

^ I do that too! Thank you, costumes!

As for me, I always associate Mario with Bowser Land (because let's face it, Mario and Bowser do go together), Luigi with Mystery Land, Peach with Horror Land, Yoshi with Pirate Land, DK with Space Land, and... I don't really associate Wario with Western Land, to be honest, but he can have it if he wants it. I actually associate Yoshi with Western Land more.

Also, I love Bowser's antics. In my family, we generally try to land on Bowser's space if we have no coins, because we know we have good chances of coming out OK. If he doesn't leave you alone, a good-case scenario is him giving you coins. Best-case scenario, you get Bowser Revolution.

Well, yeah. That's why they had to resort to hasty replacements in the US, such as Luigi sorta screaming in pain and Wario's German voice. (The "So ein Mist" vs. "DOH, I MISSED" debate should have been settled long ago, but I admit the latter is funnier.)

[up] Foreign Swear Word will let you get away with a lot. I imagine that got in for the same reasons a lot of English-language productions get away with using the word "merde."

So here's a hypothetical for y'all! Suppose that, somehow, there was a Mario Party game where all of the mini-games were mini-games you love from all across the series. The categories are 4-player, 2 vs. 2, 1 vs. 3, Battle, and Special. Optionally, you may pick Duel mini-games as well. However, Mario Party DS showed that 4-player or 2-on-2 mini-games can easily be adapted to a duel setup, so you can do that as well. Similarly, you can adapt Duel mini-games to be 4-on-4 or even 2-on-2 if you so choose. As for Special mini-games, they can be any classic Special/Rare mini-game in the series, or other mini-games changed to be "special" in some fashion. (For example, one of the rare mini-games in Mario Party 3 was a special single-player version of Mario's Puzzle Party.)

We're dreaming here, so the only limitation is your imagination!

4-player

  1. Face Lift (MP 1)
  2. Bumper Balls (MP 1)
  3. Mushroom Mix-Up (MP 1, technically it was in MP 2 as well, but I like the mushroom-themed version better than the lava-and-machinery-themed verison)
  4. Shell Shocked (MP 2)
  5. Honeycomb Havoc (MP 2)
  6. Mushroom Brew (MP 2, adapted for 4 players)
  7. Messy Memory (MP 3)
  8. M.P.I.Q. (MP 3)
  9. Booksquirm (MP 4)
  10. Stamp Out (MP 4)
  11. Coney Island (MP 5)
  12. Trap Ease Artist (MP 6)
  13. Catch You Letter (MP 6)
  14. Mowtown (MP 6)
  15. Big Popper (MPA, adapted for 4)
  16. Sort Stack (MPA, adapted for 4)
  17. Camera Shy (MPDS)
  18. Boo Tag (MPDS)
  19. [[color:yellow:Cast Aways]] (MP 1)

2 vs. 2

  1. Bobsled Run (MP 1 and 2)
  2. Toad Bandstand (MP 2)
  3. Etch 'n' Catch (MP 3)
  4. Order Up! (MP 4)
  5. Panic Pinball (MP 5)
  6. Boonanza! (MP 6, originally a Duel minigame)
  7. World Piece (MP 7)
  8. Sugar Rush (MP 8)
  9. Koopa Kurl (MPA, adapted for 2-on-2)
  10. Memory Mash (MPDS)
  11. [[color:yellow:Cashapult]] (MP 6)

1 vs. 3

  1. Blame it on the Crane (MP 4)
  2. Mario Mechs (MP 5)
  3. Dust til Dawn (MP 6)
  4. Ball Dozens (MP 6)
  5. Mush Rush (MPA, adapted for 1-on-3)
  6. Fast Food Frenzy (MPDS, adapted to use standard controls)
  7. [[color:yellow:Quicksand Cache]] (MP 4)

Battle

  1. Crazy Cutter (MP 1 and 2)
  2. Rakin' 'Em In (MP 2)
  3. Grab Bag (MP 1 and 2)
  4. Trace Race (MP 4)
  5. Mass A-Peal (MP 5, originally a DK minigame)
  6. Pier Factor (MP 6, originally a DK Minigame)
  7. Globe Gunners (MPDS)

Special:

  • Bob-omb Breakers (MP 4 and DS): A puzzle version of MP 4's Bob-omb Breakers, like the one found in MPDS. There are a lot of Mario puzzle games, but this is probably my favorite. In addition to a single-player mode, there's a competitive mode for up to 4 players.
  • Super Camera Shy (MPDS): A "super" version of MPDS's Camera Shy game. Unlike the normal game, which only has one maze and ends when you take everyone's picture once, this has a few options to it. You can pick multiple mazes, and there are a number of objectives, such as "elimination" (get a certain number of pictures taken of you, and lose) and "first to x." Also adds a few "instant flash recharge" and "cloaking device" items.
  • Challenge Face Lift: A one-player version of the classic Face Lift. There's a "challenge" mode, where you try to meet a number of points across a number of challenges. There's also a "free-play" mode, where you can just stretch the face of any character you like just for fun.
  • Dunk Bros (MP 6): A plain and simple port of MP 6's Dunk Bros., but probably with slightly improved controls.
  • The Gaddget Collection (MPA): A collection of some of the Gaddgets from Mario Party Advance. Contains all the "game" Gaddgets, as well as a good number of the "toy" ones, like Cake Maker and Bead Machine. However, non-interactive ones, and ones that wouldn't translate well to a console format (such as Lip Sync) and the non-interactive ones (like the fan) are omitted.

...Hmm... I may have spent too much time thinking about this.

As well as others on your list. D: I went to look up an actual list of all the mini-games for this, over on Mariowiki.com, but I still feel like I missed a bunch. Bwah!

I'd buy a Mario Party Fun Pack. 5-disc special edition! X)

Well, Mario Party 9's close to release. And MAN do I have a TON of videos to dump on you guys! And Mario Party 9 website's up. And here are the final 2 boards.

Here's the commercial.

Another trailer, showing off some of the boss battles.

20 minutes of Mario Party. Shows off a Bowser Jr. Minigame and a Boss Battle. (Not in English though) Yellow Toad is indeed our host for this game. Unfortunately, the video has horrible interlacing. Towards the end, there's a board event that shows off the working together aspect of the game.

A how to play video. Note that only two players are on this board. Duel mode, perhaps?

A minigame showcase. They don't show the rules though, so I have no idea what's really going on in the 1st minigame. The others are self explanatory.

Minigame showcase #2.

More Toad Road Gameplay. Looks like they're putting a lot of work into the board events. Also, video has really good framerate.

The French trailer for this game. Contains some new footage.

First 15 minutes of Boo's Horror Castle.

Gameplay of the DK board. This is the only board that has the DK space. Which means the Red Space is the only old space not in this game.

AND EVEN MORE VIDEOS BECAUSE WE TOTALLY DON'T HAVE ENOUGH MARIO PARTY 9 VIDEOS. Also, that King Bob-omb boss minigame is really gonna require some cooperation. Just watch the videos to see what I mean.

I'd list my favorite minigames, but this post is long enough already.

Maybe not the controller spinning ones, unless it's on a less hard stick, like a Gamecube control stick. XD

Also, those videos rock!

(The only thing I didn't like about Mario Party 3 was that you never fought Bowser. : ( Waluigi's Island was nifty, though—my favorite place was the Random Island, where every turn, every space was something different. Sometimes I got Chance Time!)

Also, Waluigi stole his island from Luigi. D:

Holy cow, I just noticed something. One of the Bowser events inverts the rules of the minigame. In other words, you have to lose as fast as possible! Dang, talk about mixing things up. And will probably lead to Damn You, Muscle Memory!.

Lose as fast as possible? Now that sounds fun.

Yeah, it does. Obviously not all minigames apply for that, but still sounds like a fun twist. Shame they only have a chance of happening on Bowser spaces, which are rare anyway. Really sounds like a fun way to mix things up. I wonder if the minigame modes include this option.

Unfortunately, some racing minigames apply. (Races in which you automatically go forward obviously.) Meaning that while you have fast minigames to lose; racing, ironically, will become the minigames that take the longest to lose.

Oddly enough, the Bowser Spaces don't serve as an automatic Whammy anymore. Some of the events will actually help you, instead of hindering you. (No catch either. i.e. one of the random events is him giving you 10 mini-stars for free.)
