It's not about a deadly stare, or one that turns you to stone. It's from a quote from a scene that showed the trope.

Yeah, the name taken literally means something completely different, which is never a good thing. This definitely needs a rename.

There is now a single proposition rename crowner here.

I agree that this trope needs a rename since its current name is commonly used to refer to something else entirely.

I voted up. I still occasionally get it confused with Taken for Granite.

22-1 after two months counts as consensus, I think.

Name ideas?

[up][up]Same. I think we should make the current title a redirect to that trope after renaming.

Given the support for a rename, there is now an alternative titles crowner here. I added some names, but I do not think any of them are really that good so feel free to add others as you see fit.

"the captain of the Cool Ship shows off the fantastic power source of the vessel to others, usually hapless passengers (and of course us, the audience,) to impress them with just how powerful indeed the ship is. Included will be dialogue of how dangerous it is to be exposed to such terrible energies, and that were it not for the radiation suits/visor/lead glass that were provided to gaze through, it would have otherwise been certain death to merely look on such elemental fury. Mmph. Looking at the options here, I have to say that, while they're all a vast improvement on the current name, none of them is actually very good. "Perilous Power Source" sounds like it could be referring to anything from the one ring to Mako generators, or even to some flavors of Load-Bearing Boss.

This trope is both fairly common and rather specific. I think the name may have to be a little more specific. It should probably include the word "ship", or "vessel" something like that. At the same time, it has to be clear that the danger comes from the power source, not just the ship's guns or something. Maybe something like Vessel Powered By Danger?

Other suggestion more than welcomed!

But the trope is the showing off of the dangerous power source. Not just that there is one. The leading candidate may not be clever or short but it's about as clear and concise as we're going to get.

"Display" would be more concise than "Showing Off".

Rhymes with "Protracted."

Again, those are all highly misleading and/or far too broad. None them suggest that this is about a ship of some sort. Without that, this can be mistaken for all sorts of things!

There are too many required elements in this trope too make a really short name possible, I suspect. But "ship" or "vessel" seems like one of the most important elements; one we cannot afford to omit from the name.

Showing The Ships Scary Something Source would be good if I could think of a word for power that starts with "S". Showing The Ships Scary Power Source might be good enough, though.

[down] those work too.

[up]Wow, I don't even begin to see how that is supposed to suggest the trope! Are you sure you're looking at the right trope here?

edit: if you really did mean this trope, and you're not satisfied with the current suggestions, it might help to explain why. Then maybe someone can come up with a suggestion that resolves your complaint. But Shielded Reactor Shot makes think of the opening sequence from The Simpsons.
