Actually, pretty much yes. But a more evil version of Saika.

... And Saika wasn't evil enough? It's a cursed sword that possesses people and feeds off love!

I like the school-life segments a lot (Saya is really cute for some reason; if I remember correctly she wasn't this adorable in other incarnations) but I want more of the cool fight scenes.

Just watched the first two episodes. I guess I wasn't expecting such a loose adaptation, so the new plot feels pretty weird, and I miss the old characters. And yeah, Saya is way too fond of her father. Hopefully the story will take a darker turn soon. I'm also hoping Haji shows up in this version.

As for Saya's character design...she's a bit too moe for my taste, but giving her glasses was an inspired decision. They can signify her being a cute, clumsy Meganekko one moment and a Bad Ass schoolgirl with Stoic Spectacles the next. And the battle scenes are awesome. Keep smoking that Sheen, CLAMP.

I think Episode 3 shot down the Truman Show theory.

Also, wow was this episode exactly the same as the last two.

Well, judging by the closing narration, and the fact that Trainthulhu actually got some Famous Last Words, we may be seeing some actual plot emerge soon. Also, this totally supports my Red Eyes = Possession By Sword theory.

From the sound of that closing narration the past three episodes have just been a prologue and the plot will start properly in the next episodes (hopefully). When the train turned up originally I did think we were going to get a reference to the opening of Blood The Last Vampire but no such luck.

It does now look like almost everyone in town has dissapeared and been eaten.

Melting faces, tentacled trains and buxom lesbian schoolteachers. Now we're talkin'.

Also, it's the cafe's owner who's been doing the narration, right? Wonder what he's hiding.

Be a shame if he turns out to be evil. I think he's cool.

His banter with Saya's dad is amusing. Anyway, given that he's got a past with Saya's dad, he probably knows something about...whatever the hell's going on. My vote: not evil, just more than he appears.

I just returned from watching the latest episode, and I must say, the ending did get me a bit more intrigued by the series. I was just sort of watching it because it's from CLAMP, but maybe I could start enjoying the plot soon. Also, ah, CLAMP and their unexpected pairings...

Of course we lied about the cookies. We're the DARK SIDE, remember?

For me, this series hasn't departed entirely from Blood Plus. A few of the supporting character types are the same: The Stoic Tokizane instead of Haji, Cannot Spit It Out friend Tomofusa instead of Kai, caring Hot Scientist Kanako instead of Julia. Fumito reminds me of Solomon but we will see how similar they are.

Theories:

wild mass guessFumito is slipping something into Saya's coffeewild mass guess Because of the "your coffee is different from your father's coffee" comment

wild mass guessThe dog is some sort of spiritwild mass guess Yeah, those markings are very strange. And it would be nice if the dog weren't purely for the sake of moe.

Also, whose voice is the narrator in those scenes with the capsules of blood?

I think it's Fumito, actually. Which lends more weight to the theory that there's more to the owner of Cafe Guimauve than meets the eye.

[up][up] Good points; there definitely are parallels between characters in Blood-C and Blood Plus (I don't know about Blood The Last Vampire; haven't seen it myself). Kanako is like a more fun Julia, and Tokizane seems similar to both Haji and Kai. I'm also wondering if Saya's father here is based at all on her adoptive father George from Blood Plus. Maybe (hopefully) he's not her actual dad.

I'd chalked Fumito's comment up to just saying simple things in a mysterious way. Who knows, though, might be foreshadowing. On a lighter note, Saya and the dog remind me of Sakaki.

Episode 4 from the Niconico simulcast.

All I'll say is that the "red eyes" powerup (whatever it actually is) really came off as a deus ex machina in this most recent episode. Before, she couldn't even touch the main monster of the week, but after she just chops it up like it was nothing? Aside from that, I liked this episode more than the others so far.

Sorry if that spoiled anything. Not sure if I said anything that needed spoiling.

[up] Maybe the terrifying monsters devouring the townspeople at night are the price for having an unnaturally peaceful and happy town?

Saya's cute little song is starting to sound very hollow.

The 'end on a rising tone which is suddenly cut off' bit at the end reminded me of Lost. Seriously, I think it's the exact same sound.

Anyway, thoughts:

  • Is it just me, or are the Guimauves getting bigger? The ones in ep4 are, like, twice the size of the ones we saw first.
  • Pretty obvious that Fumito is the guy with the room full of blood-globule-vial-things. And he may, to my dismay, turn out to be evil. Oh well.
  • I'm now absolutely certain that the 'red-eyes' powerup is Saya being possessed by the sword. Or should that be <<Sword>>? Especially with the 'light' turning out to be a katana.
  • That dog may or may not be imaginary. Seems that only Saya can see it, and generally speaking real dogs can't climb trees.
  • Never before has someone saying "It's a nice day out" sounded so ominous. Taking bets on whether Kanako's previous 'research' job had something to do with the Elder Bairns.
  • We saw a girl, in a sword-induced flashback, for a fraction of a second with (a) two hair braids, similar to Saya and (b) wearing an old-style sailor fuku. My theory is that it's her mother. Genetic Memory, perhaps?

[up]It has been a while since I watched it but I am around 98% certain that at least some of those flashes that Saya had were taken directly from the original Blood The Last Vampire and the sailor fuku is suspiciously like the one Saya wore in that so it could be that the original Saya is this Saya's mother.

This was a great episode and the series is definitely improving.
