There's an ocean region in my universe referred to as The White Horn that's viewed as roughly the same as the Everfree, though it's functionally different. Nopony knows precisely what happens inside of it, since nopony who comes through is particularly excited to talk about it(Or anything else for that matter), but considering the recorded effects have included coat turnign from black to white, going mute, going blind, and donating all of one's wealth to Charity and disappearing into the countryside, it's generally marked as a 'no-go' zone just to be safe.

Even I haven't quite decided what happens in there, but I'm leaning towards 'the mist forms figures based on your negative memories, or ambient memories, and torments you, with some other side effects from the sheer magic in the area

But as for sailing, they almost definitely do - in the official map of Equestria there's a bay with a little boat on it, implying that there's a port there.

I feel your pain.

I apologise. I was unaware how long ago that chapter had been written, and even then I was a little too harsh about this.

Yeah, if Manehattan is anything like the real deal, it's at least partly a port city. They probably use it for trade with griffons or something.

Anyway, I've been working on a goofy little oneshot based on comments in the main thread. Which I will spoiler because I kinda want it to be uncertain how serious it is until it's revealed exactly what Celestia's obsessed with. Basically, Celestia has developed an obsession with stained glass windows that commemorate things. She starts with logical stuff like the elements of harmony and such, but when she runs out of major events she starts commissioning windows based on increasingly irrelevant stuff. The story starts when Luna goes to confront her about how she's wasting time and resources on things like making a stained glass version of a sandwich she liked.

So it starts off looking like something fairly serious, but gets increasingly ridiculous as it goes on.

I don't do a lot of plotless wordlbuilding, but that might be a future story to consider. Never Tamed; [Ad] The Everfree Forest is one of Equestria's most dangerous landmarks—a place where nature runs itself, where ponies have no control. Doctor [OC name] has been studying the place for decades, and is no closer to discovering why it is the way it is. After hitting dozens of dead ends, they decide to take their research in a new direction; the ocean.

The Unbroken Ocean Everfree Sea is a stormy, violent patch of water in the middle of the Pacecific Ocean. No ship has ever crossed it alive, no navigator mapped it, no pegasi redirected it. There are old mare's tales of an island at the center of the biggest storm, with treasure or sexy merponies or ancient temples or a dozen other temptations.

Only a ship crewed by psychopaths would dare enter it, but you'd be surprised who you a can hire with a big enough research budget.

Potential plot points include: an actual island being there; old-timey diving suits; an Awful Truth (ooh, maybe Celestia placed magic there to protect something? As a failsafe in case ponies ever went extinct? Maybe Discord or one of his precursors lost a limb there? Maybe rigidly controlling every other place creates feedback at certain spots?); A crew of colorful Ragtag Bunch of Misfits

[up][up]I'd probably read that.

Were you just going to focus on Celestia, or touch on the speculation that any pony who gains enough phenomenal cosmic power has the side effect of becoming obsessed with some bit of architecture? Like Sombra and his stairs.

(I want to tie Alicorn-Amulet-Trixie's distrust of wheels into this as well...)

That was the conversation that led to him getting the idea. Think it worked out that Luna was obsessed with balconies, and Twi of course, with making sure every single wall is full of bookcases.

Speaking of conversations, is there a Skype group for this thread or something? That would be awesome.

This one, not that I know of, but there is one for the main pony thread.

Sereg: Oi, that made it sound a bit too overly convoluted (which it kind of is, to be fair, but the time travel/loops part aren't needed to understand the pony part of the setting).

Basically, the Equestria in this AU is just one part of a Magical World placed onto another world (which is Mars, yes, but it doesn't exactly matter for the pony spinoff's plot). Several creatures of a wide variety of species and civilizations inhabit that world, including humans and ponies and the long staples of fantasy like elves and dwarves, but it's unusual for humans to head into Equestria.

You don't really need to read the mother fic to understand this one. The core mechanics of the altered setting are explained in the first chapter. The mother fanfic takes place in Earth and its characters and the ones seen in the spinoff haven't ever even met.

@Midnight: Apology accepted. I realise that you were trying to be helpful I do appreciate it. As Seraphem said, there's one for the mane pony thread if you're interested.

@JT and Clever: Interested in both ideas.

Also, it would be the Pegasific Ocean.

EDIT: @Napoleon: Sorry.

Whats he said!

All this talk of a damned part of the ocean reminds me of whatever the hell lies beyond SCP-1372.

"If anyone ever finds this, do not sail west from here. All those men we scoffed at were right after all. The world is flat after all, and I've seen its edge. The captain sailed over with almost all hands onboard. I and three others escaped attempts to restrain us and stole the ship's longboat, rowing away as fast as we could to screams of "coward" from the remaining hands. The ship never turned, though, and soon we watched the captain's flagship tip over the edge of the world and fall down into the gulf beyond… may God rest their souls... the moment I heard the men onboard that ship speak, I didn't want to understand their far-off words. I wanted to destroy them before they could speak again."

For it to be flat, what kind of non-Eucledan egometry would we be living in?

Also, what's with this standard horror tone? I can almost hear Mandus speaking...

The world isn't flat, it's just that one section of the Earth that's has an edge that leads to some horrible, Lovecraftian dimension.

I'm sick of those and the generic madness they generate. So far, only very few works of fiction seem to show actual medical madness. Lovecraftian madness looks like PTSD on steroids, and feels overdone. I want to see Del Toro's On The Mountains Of Madness, looks promising.

Wow, people really jumped down the author's throat on the way A Mighty Demon Slayer Grooms Some Ponies ended. Yeah, that swerve at the end made me go "wait, what?" but that's not reason enough to harass someone so much they delete the last chapter and cancel the intended sequel.

It's not really a "generic" madness. It's more of a Lovecraftian Brown Note that spreads to whoever knows what's over the edge.

"It is not the kind [of disease] that you know and that doctors treat. Not like the disease that covers the skin in painful spots, or that brings pain and sleep upon us. We call it ilekwah. It is carried not by sneezes, or by touching the blood of the infected, like the diseases you know. It is carried in the words of the infected one, in the knowledge he brings from beyond the edge of the world... the words of those who return from beyond the end of the world are a message from [REDACTED]. They sing his praises eternally as they sail the sea, and they speak of what you crave to know. And any who comprehend their words will fall to the plague as well."

The villains possessed Celestia and Luna way back when, created the elements of harmony, and ruled over Equestria in peace and love for milennia because they knew that the magic of friendship could trump the magic of the Rainbow of Light, and that they would be able to wield the magic of the elements in the human world because when (this comes from Equestria Girls) you bring the elements to another world they start to become corrupted. Also, Tirec is Megan's half-brother.

And it was all basically just an elaborate plan to get from Equestria to Earth and use the corrupted Elements of Harmony (said corruption being possible because, as when Sunset Shimmer stole Twilight's Element, the Elements are not on their home world anymore) to kill Megan.

Not to kill Megan, to recruit her and kill the Queen. Killing Megan was only plan B.

Haven't read it, so I can't comment.

@Meta: This story would just focus on Celestia, and would be basically Rule of Funny, but it definitely is a tempting idea to think that achieving a certain level of power inevitably results in an obsession with architecture. You could even get a lot of humor mileage out of the characters trying to figure out how the heck those two things are connected.
