I agree with this
Agreed too. We have to precise who sang it, and especially why.
That page is a horrific mess. Someone who knows music backwards and front is going to need to get in there and start the process, because I was completely lost simply reading it. It definitely needs a clean-up, to be certain.
I'll take a stab at the (very few) cases I know, but this page is definitely in need of an expert.
Edit: What should we do with all the Mondegreens? Keep? Move to the Mondegreen page?
Edit 2: Some cases won't fit the format, since they are related to a band or more general (the "country or rap" thing for example). What should be done with them?
Edit 3: Following the example of other meme pages, should we folderize according to bands? For example, The Beatles have a number of memes that might benefit from that.

Bump - anybody else interested in working on this?
This page seems to have a big issue with Zero Context Examples. We need a way to deal with them.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanOk, to get this started, some proposals: We could...
- Folderize according to creators, were appropriate.
- Move zero-context examples to their own page, and zap that page in, say, 3 months. If someone can say something about one of the examples, they can always move them to the main page.
- Split Mondegreens into youtube mondegreen videos and give those their own folder, and troper tales, which are zapped on sight.
- See how much remains, and deal with the rest as appropriate.

A sandbox would probably be helpful in doing all of those suggestions - we definitely can't endeavor to clean that thing without the help of one, honestly.
Would having a 'Meta' folder be a problem? The Milli Vanilli meme is far more about their scandalous reveal as not being actual singers than their song.
If there's more examples like this, we could have one (in fact, there's a "general" folder in the sandbox already). On the other hand, I see nothing wrong in having band-specific memes be in the band folder, even if it's not about specific songs.
Does this still need work?
Last time I checked, "needs more work" would have been an understatement.
Memes are supposed to be viral and internet phenomenons, nah ? I suggest massive clean-up and the removal of unfitting cases. Seriously, this page is the biggest mess of crap I've seen in Tv Tropes, hugger than the still huge Anime page.
This has been around far too long. It is very much still a mess, and it won't start to keep itself clean until everything there is properly done. Can all examples formatted incorrectly and without context for rewriting be pulled to the discussion page? That'd preserve them for future addition by people willing to enter them properly (I doubt any one person has the knowledge to get everything done) and clean the actual page.

That was the amazing part. Things just keep going. To be honest, in that case we would probably pull 90% of the page to discussion. Not that I would mind if we did so...
Yo TV Tropes, I'm real happy for you, I'mma let you finish, but the old Memes/Music article was one of the best articles of all time! One of the best articles of all time!
In all seriousness, this needs a bit of context on most of the examples.
I had a dog-themed avatar before it was cool.Would it benefit from sorting by genre as well, if the examples ever get cleaned up? (Seriously, this thread's been open over a year and at the time I'm writing this there's a grand total of seven examples in the new format. I'm fixing a few more now.)
I changed the wording of the format note to exchange "hottip" for "note/labelnote".
This fix is going slowly because most examples don't have the context required for the new format.
Unless we want to comment out all the contextless stuff - now SOP for zero context example filled pages, I notice - and close this.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanMy first thought on looking at it was pretty much "tear it down and start over." Your idea's a little less destructive.
OK, one last bump.
Is there any objection to commenting out the bad examples, then put this thread to sleep?
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanDid a trial page on Music Memes. Any comments on replacing the main Memes.Music with it?
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanLooks good.
A while back, it was proposed that we clean up all the meme pages by providing an explanation of each meme instead of just posting, say, quotes or song lyrics.
The Music page of "Memes" ( https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Memes/Music ) still doesn't follow the proposed format, for the most part. (Proposed format explained here: Memetic Mutation )
Time for a cleaning?
