Another issue I had: There were a couple of mistranslations I could spot even without having the original text on-hand. The more notable was when Yasumi said her name should be "pronounced in katakana". The other one was less prominent, which explains why I've forgotten it. I think it was later on though, and quite possibly also related to Yasumi.

Just read it.

I think I may have to read it again, just in case I missed some thing but mostly because it was so freaking awesome! cool

Does anyone else think that Kyon's meeting with future!Haruhi sort of implies that she finds out about everything eventually?

[up] Hmm. I thought it implied the opposite.

At the very least it implies that he never told her about that particular occasion.

Ah, that just reminded me: Haruhi didn't answer exactly honestly when asked why she decided to go to North High.

Given that that was immediately followed by a brief blurb about how the "feel" of a name changes depending on how it's written, I got the impression that she was just being kind of weird. It's kind of like making a fuss over whether or not a word is being pronounced with a capital letter, which I see all the time in fiction. And, well, katakana pronunciation is a thing, although it's usually considered to be a robotic way of speaking. It's just as notable as ALL-CAPS is in English, and like English that carries connotations when used for written dialog.

Yasumi really does state that she wants her name to be said "in katakana." (「どうか、ヤスミと呼んでください。できればカタカナで発音されると嬉しいです……ですってさ」)

My issue was not that she wanted it in katakana, my issue was that she wanted it pronounced in katakana. Pronouncing things is for when you're talking, not writing.

EDIT: Oh, and I'm going to read through that bit of Japanese you just posted now. (Just saying this to make sure you realize that it had no bearing on my statement above.)

EDIT2: Very interesting. And odd. 発音 does indeed refer to the verbal rendering of words and sounds (aka. pronunciation). I guess the whole thing's just an oddity on Yasumi's part then. :/

Just read both parts last night.

I'm not going to lie, I was actually rather underwhelmed with most of it, I guess due to the fact that it was really depressing ... until the final chapter. Then I realized that all the wait had been worth it (also, I guess since I'd already read the data space battle the instant it got translated that it didn't have as big of an impact for me). That final chapter though, ho-ly shit.

Random thoughts:

  • Itsuki is credit to team
  • I find it somewhat odd that Kuyou has almost gotten Karma Houdini status, in that no one seems to care that she tried to kill Haruhi. Sure it was at Fujiwara's insistence, but it's not like she had a problem with it.
  • I see that there's probably at least a couple of plot holes that have been dropped, what with the Kyon who fell through time thing that happened at the end.
  • A glimpse of all three TFEI at the end, surely this won't be the last appearance of Asakura. I really can't thank the Pt B enough.
  • What interests me the most though, has to be in the author's notes. Tanigawa specifically mentions a "somewhat strange thing and character" and then goes on to say "I think the character will have a damaged personality". I wonder if this is for a new series, or if this character will appear in an upcoming novel, or if he's planning to somehow even change one of the existing characters to fit this...

It was an awesome read though.

You can't call those plot holes "dropped" until the next few novels come up, considering that the author has a fetish for the Law of Conservation of Detail.

Ultimately, we completely missed the climactic confrontation of the story. Kyon disappeared right when things were heating up and we missed the rest of it. this echoes what happened in the 4th volume, and I wouldn't be surprised if it's revisited in future volumes, again like the climax of the 4th.

Oh, I didn't mean dropped as in "he's given up on them" I meant dropped as in "here, look at this tantalizing piece of information, bet'cha can't wait to find out how this comes about, can you?"

That's not dropped, that's just left hanging. Important distinction.

Does any nation of Earth deserve Karma Houdini status WRT what they did in the 20th Century?

To compare any TFEI (why do I always want to turn this into "Tiffany"?) to a mere nation of Earth, is to vastly understate the scope of the alien.

[up] What's WRT and TFEI?

I wonder if the fact that Koizumi is the leader of the Organization will be mentioned or be important later on.

The TFEI is the Integrated Data Thought Entity, maybe? No wait I don't know what that is.

WRT is "with regard to" I think

What Fujiwara said about Itsuki isn't necessarily true though.

More than likely it is based on Itsuki's reactions, but it isn't confirmed.

[up] That's true, and, I'll add that her method of delivery doesn't seem like she's trying to mislead either.

Don't know why I remembered it as Fujiwara trying to get to Kyon.

Were do we send the letters to make Kyonko the slider? evil grin

And at this point can we say that The Arthur Dent does not apply?

Dent himself actually makes a difference to his own plot. Kyon is just The Chew Toy in the hands of a kawaiikunee jealous God. His absence would only make God slightly more bored.

There were lots of prophets running around shouting that The Choice was his to make, but in the end his Leap of Faith only served to validate that The Chosen One was worth dying for.

I gotta admit, I didn't like volume 10 as much as I liked previous volumes. For starters, there was the issue being raised that Kyon making a new SOS Brigade with the other group.

Now it's one thing that ths obviously something Kyon doesn't want, so why even bring it up. But nobody else in that group wants this either. And the SOS Brigade wasn't there for Kyon foor begin with, they were there exacly because of Haruhi. It's just such an impossible suggestion that I really didn't get the attention it got. Secondly, on three seperate occasions at leas did Kyon finally understand that they were planning on making Sasaki a god. The second time I was like "Uh, yeah, you have told this already." The third time was at the end of a big speech concerning their power and I really didn't feel we were getting new info.

Lastly, no volume can sustain Koizumi, Sasaki and Kunikida all getting active speaking roles. Seriously. In fact, Taniguchi should get a bigger part on account of being the only character that can have a conversation with Kyon wihout it boggling the mind.

Sorry for the rant.

wild mass guess Yuki shot first!

Kuyou attacks Yuki, the moment she figures out that she's been chasing the wrong boy?

Perhaps she was attacking the person who had misdirected her in the first place...
