A Senate page was fired after she walked in during the Throne speech and held up a sign that read "Stop Harper".

[Translation for non-Canadians: A low level worker in the senate was protesting during the governing party's general address to the parliament]

She also prepared a statement to the media that read...

"Harper's agenda is disastrous for this country and for my generation," De Pape said in the release. "We have to stop him from wasting billions on fighter jets, military bases, and corporate tax cuts while cutting social programs and destroying the climate. Most people in this country know what we need are green jobs, better medicare, and a healthy environment for future generations."

So what do you think of this act of protest and the response?

Not exactly the proper venue.

Message is irrelevant, though I know that somebody wouldn't be fired for a supportive sign.

If she was busy disrupting official business on work time I could see her getting fired being with in reason. If she had done it on her free time I would say that was uncalled for.

Um, is firing Page for protesting in a non-violent manner even legal?

The thing about making witty signature lines is that it first needs to actually be witty.

Well, apparently the page did do it in the Senate Chamber, so probably.

Doing things on the place of business changes the equation. Then it's disruption of the event as much as the content of the poster.

Don't worry! If she appeals to Canadian Supreme Court (somehow) they can always write new law for the page!

Yeah, if she was doing it during work hours, perfect cause for firing.

Ah, right, that. I can't really say if firing her is justified, but it's certainly worth of some sort of punishment. After all, you have to have some place for politics to happen professionally (HA!) without all of the noise from various groups.

The thing about making witty signature lines is that it first needs to actually be witty.

Her term as a page was ending in three weeks anyways. No matter what the sign said, she would have been fired. Sometimes people are too quick to call bias.

Not that I disagree with her political statement.

I'm surprised that it seems like not a single member of the senate seems to agree with the position the page took (not the action, but the cause).

I mean, if something like that happened on the floor of the US Senate, such a person would probably find themselves promoted. Well... After they got out of jail for disrupting the duties of congress...

Well they largely did the agreeing by not pressing charges.

Yeah, the problem is indeed she did it during her work hours. She majorly neglected her duties, practically even went right against them. Of course that is a ground for firing.

While I can see how her firing is completely valid (Neglecting duties, talking shit about her employers), having seen the pictures I really think she was kinda badass.

I mean, if you are going to lose your job, talk about going out in style.
