First thing's first: KEEP. THIS. SHIT. CIVIL. If you can't talk about race without resorting to childish insults and rude generalizations or getting angry at people who don't see it your way, leave the thread.

With that said, I bring you to what can hopefully be the general thread about race.

First, a few starter questions.

  • How, if at all, do you feel your race affects your everyday life?
  • Do you believe that white people (or whatever the majority race in your area is) receive privileges simply because of the color of their skin. How much?
    • Do you believe minorities are discriminated against for the same reason? How much?
  • Do you believe that assimilation of cultures is better than people trying to keep their own?
  • Affirmative Action. Yea, Nay? Why or why not?

Also, a personal question from me.

  • Why (in my experience, not trying to generalize) do white people often try to insist that they aren't white? I can't count the number of times I've heard "I'm not white, I'm 1/4th English, 1/4th German, 1/4th Scandinavian 1/8th Cherokee, and 1/8th Russian," as though 4 of 5 of those things aren't considered "white" by the masses. Is it because you have pride for your ancestry, or an attempt to try and differentiate yourself from all those "other" white people? Or something else altogether?

I agree with the notion that they should fire him outright, especially if his contract is about to expire, you want people to understand that this sort of thing is not tolerable at any level.

Also, should I try to make a trope page for that? Good Is Hard sounds like a good counterpart for Evil Is Easy.

Instead of focusing on relatives that divide us, we should find the absolutes that tie us.

Why isn't he fired? Why is it so hard to fire bad teachers?

If there tenured it can be about impossible legally, pair in the union as mentioned previously and teachers are surprisingly hard to fire if they have been around for a while.

indefinite suspension can acomplish the same thing with much less legal hoops, even if it is much less satisfying. :/

By the way, anyone gonna do a Useful Notes on the Atlantic Slave Trade? As bad as it was, it was still an important event in Africa and North America, after all.

I worry that starting one is going to attract a certain kind of person.....

not that we shouldn't because like you said its important, but if we do we are going to need to watch it....

I think it should be done with some help of the moderators but it still must be mentioned since that event affected both Africa and America in many different ways.

And it's not like we are against making Useful Notes about controversial but important events like that as long as it's properly moderated. We have one for the Holocaust, after all.

The one for the Holocaust is likely badly in need of clean up I'll note. A lot of the edits were made by a troper who a) liked to present himself as a historical expert despite being nothing of the sort and b) was banned for Stalin apologia. Perhaps some changes have been made since then, but last time I looked, much of the page was still his work.

Long story short, I second the efforts to create a page for Atlantic slave trade very, very carefully.

While this thread usually focuses on American racism, Britain had their "hold my beer" moment recently with a batch of anonymous letters encouraging people to participate in "Punish a Muslim Day." Some letters mailed to muslim homes and businesses. Full article text

LONDON — The anonymous letters arrived this weekend in plain white envelopes with second-class stamps, and were sent to people in at least six communities in England.

Inside was a message so hateful it sent ripples of alarm across the country and prompted a national counterterrorism investigation.

The message said that April 3 would be “Punish a Muslim Day,” and that points would be awarded for acts of violence: 25 points for pulling a woman’s head scarf, 500 points for murdering a Muslim and 1,000 for bombing a mosque.

Riaz Ahmed, a Liberal Democrat councilor in West Yorkshire County, told The Mirror on Saturday that he had received one of the letters at his business address.

“It seems strange that anyone would send something like this to an address in a predominantly Muslim area," Ahmed was quoted as saying. "When I opened it and saw the content, I was horrified.”

People in Birmingham, Cardiff, Leicester, London and Sheffield have also reported receiving the notes, according to the authorities, a member of Parliament and an organization that monitors anti-Muslim activity.

The Metropolitan Police of London and other officials have warned Britons to be vigilant, and counterterrorism officials are investigating.

Naz Shah, a member of Parliament from Bradford West, said on Twitter and in a Facebook post that members of her community had received the letters and that the situation had become “very distressful, not only those who have received the letter but also for the wider communities.”

Shah said the North East Counter Terrorism Unit, which is coordinating the investigation, had informed her that the letters appeared to be linked and that “a thorough and professional investigation is well underway.”

The North East Counter Terrorism Unit said in a statement that it had received reports of “potentially malicious communications sent to individuals across the U.K.,” and asked victims to contact their local police.

The significance of April 3, 2018, was not immediately clear. Some neo-Nazi groups use the number 18 to signify the letters of Hitler’s first and last names in the alphabet.

I'm actually kind of surprised they didn't set it for April 20th, Hitler's Birthday. Maybe they're saving that date for "Fuck Over a Jew Day" instead?

That’s the epitome of privilege right there, not considering armed nazis a threat to your life. - Silasw

Oh damn, I wonder how that'll go.

At any rate: (The Grio) Black pregnant mom incarcerated by Stand Your Ground law

Siwatu-Salama Ra, a 26-year old pregnant, Detroit mother and community leader was just sentenced to two years in prison.

Last July, while she and her toddler were visiting her mother, Siwatu was confronted by a neighbor. The neighbor rammed her vehicle into Siwatu’s car while her two-year old was inside and then tried to use the vehicle to run Siwatu and her mother over. Fearing for their lives, Siwatu, who is a licensed concealed gun owner, held her weapon in plain sight, hoping it would stop her neighbor from running them over.

The weapon was unloaded and no one was hurt. Siwatu didn’t have any intention of using it. She was not engaging or thinking of engaging in deadly force. All she wanted to do was to protect herself and her family and defend herself without causing injury to any other person.

Michigan has a specific law, popularly known as the Stand Your Ground law to protect people who act by using a firearm to defend themselves from another person who they believe is going to cause unlawful harm to them if there is “an honest and reasonable belief that force is imminent.” However, instead of the law working for Siwatu, it was used against her.

So a black woman uses the law in possibly the safest and most justified case possible (an unloaded gun to deter someone trying to hurt a pregnant woman, a child, and an elder in, as far as is mentioned in the article, an unprovoked attack), and of course she gets sent to jail.

They're not even trying to hide anymore.

It's been fun.

The whole argument from the prosecution apparently was that she couldn't have really been scared. Because black women can't be scared, just angry. The only thing more infuriating than the prosecution making that argument was that it worked.

You know that if she was white she would have been lauded as a hero or something and held up as a role model by the NRA.

Well, this is just.....nice, pretty fucking nice, ughhh..

Something I have notice in US and probably other place is that White people have this "citizen first" mentality were they are consider by the defeaut a "proper" citizen, sometimes by virtues of being white, sometimes male and heterosexual, meaning they are individualized to such extent were they become just regular person WHO just happen to do a bad thing at random.

Well fuck this. We are basically a third world country when it comes to fairly representing minorities. As long as Republicans are in charge and figures like Trump are in the white house this will keep happening.

I don't blame anybody who wants to leave for Canada. Sometimes I feel like this country isn't worth fixing, because you know the white woman who tried to run her over will be considered a hero and probably given a parade by Republicans.
