First thing's first: KEEP. THIS. SHIT. CIVIL. If you can't talk about race without resorting to childish insults and rude generalizations or getting angry at people who don't see it your way, leave the thread.

With that said, I bring you to what can hopefully be the general thread about race.

First, a few starter questions.

  • How, if at all, do you feel your race affects your everyday life?
  • Do you believe that white people (or whatever the majority race in your area is) receive privileges simply because of the color of their skin. How much?
    • Do you believe minorities are discriminated against for the same reason? How much?
  • Do you believe that assimilation of cultures is better than people trying to keep their own?
  • Affirmative Action. Yea, Nay? Why or why not?

Also, a personal question from me.

  • Why (in my experience, not trying to generalize) do white people often try to insist that they aren't white? I can't count the number of times I've heard "I'm not white, I'm 1/4th English, 1/4th German, 1/4th Scandinavian 1/8th Cherokee, and 1/8th Russian," as though 4 of 5 of those things aren't considered "white" by the masses. Is it because you have pride for your ancestry, or an attempt to try and differentiate yourself from all those "other" white people? Or something else altogether?

There are plenty of Vietnamese I know call Asians as "yellow skinned people."

Even the Vietnamese flag colors signifies (other than a Communist knock off) red blood and yellow skin.

Something interesting I came across in my news feeds today:

Exclusive: Florida Public School Teacher Has A White Nationalist Podcast

https://m.huffpost.com/us/entry/us_5a99ae32e4b089ec353a1fba

Quick version: A Florida middle school social studies teacher has been outed as the host of a white supremacist podcast called "Unapologetic". As of yesterday, at least, she's been removed from the classroom once the district was made aware.

An excerpt:

In her most recent podcast on Feb. 26, a guest railed against diversity in schools, dismissing the idea that “a kid from Nigeria and a kid who came from Sweden are supposed to learn exactly the same” and have the “same IQ.” Volitich enthusiastically agreed with the guest, and went on to argue that “science” has proven that certain races are smarter than others.

In the same episode, Volitich boasted about bringing her white nationalist beliefs into the classroom and hiding her ideology from administrators. She said that when parents complained to the school’s principal about how she is injecting political bias into the classroom, Volitich lied to the principal and said it was not true.

“She believed me and backed off,” she said.

Volitich also agreed with her guest’s assertion that more white supremacists need to infiltrate public schools and become teachers. “They don’t have to be vocal about their views, but get in there!” her guest said. “Be more covert and just start taking over those places.”

“Right,” Volitich said. “I’m absolutely one of them.”

Not just admitting it. Boasting about it. That's some hubris right there. And we all know what follows hubris.

She was using an alias, albeit one that was mostly an anagram of her actual name. Where she lives and worked was something Huff post worked out.

The irony of using an alias to run a podcast called "unapologetic" is extremely amusing [lol]

Suspension is frequently used as a first reaction to get a teacher out of the classroom immediately before getting their bureaucratic ducks in a row to fire them permanently.

It's not about mercy. It's about doing it right so you don't open yourself up to wrongful termination lawsuits and the like. Especially since, as a teacher, there's likely a union involved, so the guy being suspended automatically has representation available.

If they're clearly in the wrong, the union can usually choose not to dispute the termination. But just having to go through the union to say "hey, you gonna fight this or not?" adds to the process.

The article did say that he's being transferred to a non-teaching position for the rest of the year, and that his contact expires in a few months. Whole lot easier to just not rehire him.

Easier, maybe - but better?

Good Is Hard? Is that a trope? The only way we're going to get assholes like this to understand that their racism is wrong is to punish them the right way, even if it's harder. If they just don't renew his contract, he can go on and get hired to teach kids somewhere else by honestly stating "my contract expired." If he gets fired for "spouting racist BS in class" that's going to be much harder for him to conceal from future employers.

They should definitely fire him, but any employer who considers hiring him from now on is at least going to Google search his name and find out what he's done. He won't just be able to pretend it didn't happen.
