I Know That Gun is now a redirect for Improperly Placed Firearms, its laconic is on the cutlist and the new laconic for Improperly Placed Firearms mentions how the weapons do not fit the setting of the work. The wicks should be fixed and cleaned up to fit that description, there are notes about the change on the Renamed Tropes page and in the renamed tropes thread, and I sent a report to move the discussion page.

I think there are a couple of remaining issues though. First, it would probably be a good idea to check the page's description and examples now that the rename has been completed since I did quite a bit of editing and I am not sure it was all appropriate. Would it be a good idea to cut the Real Life section? It seems a bit unnecessary to me personally, but I am not sure about that.

Second, it is worth it to make a trope about "a (fictional) prop gun is made of a real weapon or a model of a real weapon"*

? If so, the following would be some examples for that trope.

Film

  • Star Wars has many examples of this.
    • Han Solo's blaster is a Mauser C96 handgun with a scope and the nozzle of a fire extinguisher stuck on.
    • Rebel soldiers are armed with prop weapons the body of which is a cast of a WW 2 Sturmgewehr-44 assault rifle.
    • Stormtroopers tend to carry heavy blasters which are Lewis light machine guns without magazines, and rifles made from British Sterling SMGs.
    • Jawa blasters are made from British Lee-Enfield Mk. III bolt-action rifles with tin cans stuck on the end.
    • The body of Boba Fett's blaster is an Enfield No. 1 Mk. 1 flaregun.
    • You can take this all the way to I Know That Tank and even I Know That Battleship with the vehicles; the models built for shooting were detailled using parts of dozens of model kits of tanks, ships, aircraft and vehicles haphazardly arranged over their surfaces.
  • The assault rifles depicted in Starship Troopers are modified M14s, though this is really only noticeable when there's a close up of the ejection port.
  • Aliens
    • The M41A pulse-rifle is made from a Thompson SMG, its grenade launcher made from a Remington 870 shotgun inside the shell of a Franchi SPAS-12.
    • The smartguns are each made from an MG-42 machine gun mated with a Steadicam camera harness and some pieces of a bicycle.
    • The flamethrower built on a cut-up M16 receiver with an M203 handguard.
    • The sentry guns are built around WW 1 Maxim LMG 08/15 machine guns.
  • Some of the 'laser guns' in the first (low budget) Terminator movie are clearly contemporary auto weapons, such as the fifty-calibre machine gun in the car sequence.

Live-Action Television

  • The clerics' weapons in the Doctor Who episode The Time Of Angels are P90s with extra stuff strapped on to them.
  • In Red Dwarf's eighth series, the resurrected crew of the titular ship appear to use Steyr AUGs as their standard service rifle. Canaries appear to be armed with modified MP5s.
    • The canaries actually seem to be wielding some form of modified G3s, or variant thereof. The "magazines" are straight and more in line with a rifle caliber than a pistol one. Not to mention the amount of barrel forward of the foregrip.

I'd recommend that you take that to YKTTW. It seems to be a popular way to make props. I'm hollering for a clock though.

Fight smart, not fair.
