[up] Not talking about sterility though, talking about how EVA survived with an irradiated man, with the consequence being that she should have been dead pre-2014.

The same reason he survived all the way to 2014, and he was the one who was exposed to the Castle Bravo bomb's radiation by being on site. Before you even begin to question EVA's survival because of second-hand radioactive contamination for that long, you have to question that of Big Boss first about surviving first-hand contamination for that same length of time... and then take into account the fact that EVA's exposure happened 10 years after Big Boss's exposure, meaning that his original radioactivity level has dropped significantly already.

You can't actually get radiation poisoning from someone who was exposed in the past. That's like saying you could catch on fire by coming into contact with someone who received third degree burns 10 years ago.

What makes a good man turn neutral? Lust for gold? Power? Or were you just born with a heart full of neutrality?

[up][up] Actually, it's more complicated than that. Radioactive material from fall-out can get into tissues and body fluids. Like semen. And sweat. And saliva. And blood. Definitely blood.

Of course, radioactive decay is a thing. And I really doubt that one sexual encounter ten years after the initial exposure would have any noticeable effect. I mean, the body does have a little bit of polonium in it.

And we only see Snake and Eva with their clothes on in that scene. It could have been heavy petting, one of them might have had a condom, or pulled out or something.

Regardless. I mean, someone with massive exposure levels having sex with and kissing a person for an extended period of time might, in fact, have an effect.

Like, I think there was a really bad Spider-Man spin-off what-if thing where Mary-Jane got cancer because of sleeping with someone with radioactive spider blood for a few decades.

But Big Boss and Eva only hooked up the one time, ten years after the initial exposure.

EDIT: On the other hand, Volgin used one of those Davy Crocket nukes and then the Boss used the other one. Snake and Eva were nearby for both of those. So.

In light of the radiation thing, I stand corrected. Thanks guys.

Next order of business, anyone get the feeling Kojima has become a bit of a sadist to his characters recently? I mean, he doesn't want to acknowledge Portable Ops canon, which is where it's seen that Sokolov survived.

Kojima had pretty much nothing to do with Portable Ops other than having a Producer credit; which is why Peace Walker was specifically advertised as "... the first official Hideo Kojima game on the PSP system" and "A HIDEO KOJIMA GAME." (Source: Peace Walker's box.)

Also, no official statement has actually been made regarding MPO's canon-ness; it just tends to more-often-than-not not appear whenever Konami/Kojima shows a list of the MGS titles. That said, it is referenced in both GOP and PW, though the latter's is more of a Take That! than anything.

I was pretty sure that I read somewhere that Kojima said parts of MPO were canon and others weren't, but now I can't remember where that was.

A quick added note to the radiation thing:

First up, if Snake was irradiated 10 years ago in that incident, then he's probably not too sick any more. I would say that it's unlikely that radiation would come into play regarding sex with EVA. Now, fallout from the Davy Crockett launched at Sokolov's research facility, during the Virtuous Mission - that's something to think about.

Also, Big Boss has died/come close to dying numerous times - he was in the helicopter incident in GZ and spent 10 years in a coma, Solid Snake nearly killed him once and pretty much killed him the second time, and both of those times Big Boss got new body parts - cybernetic and organic, respectively. He survived for as long as he did for 2 reasons, pretty much - blind luck, and extensive medical surgery.

Also, the most fatal effects of radiation will manifest by the end of the first year or two, so the fact that BB's still alive 10 years after Castle Bravo means he wasn't doused with enough to kill him. Cancerous tumors in his older years, maybe, but it's not a guarantee (and probably never did happen from the looks of things).

Plus, keep in mind there are actually survivors of the Hiroshima bomb from WWII who were exposed to both the flash, dust, and rain and are still alive to this date in Japan. So even if BB for some bizarre reason was shooting out radioactive seed into EVA, it's probably not gonna be in sufficient quantities to give her cancer/sterility, let alone kill her.

New question: In Metal Gear 2 Solid Snake, Madnar sided with Big Boss because they Americans couldn't commission Metal Gear D, whereas REX got commissioned instead. Would that mean Baker had a hand with not commissioning D?

SgtRicko Since: Jul, 2009

Impossible to say. Kojima pretty much ignored Madnar and most of the technical details regarding Metal Gear's development once the Solid series started. So while it's a very plausible idea, I don't think we'll ever be able to confirm or deny it (unless the Phantom Pain adds some new details).

Oh hey I found the Metal Gear thread.

Currently in the middle of trying for a No Alert Normal run on MGS 3 HD. I'm up to the last bits of Groznyj Grad.

The tough part's going to be the bit with EVA in the jungle just before The Boss.

I sure said that!

I've actually managed these sorts of runs before (On both vanilla PS 2 and Subsistence) and I've got plenty of full stamina foodstuffs on me, so it shouldn't be too unmanagable.

Also its not for No Alert runs but EVA can at least take care of herself fairly well.

I think the hardest part of a No Alert run of MGS 3 is actually escaping from the prison.

Or at least that was where I resetted the most in Extreme.

[up][up]

While I haven't attempted it on higher difficulties, the hardest part for me was the chase through the jungle with EVA. The enemies just kept on coming and I had to wait for EVA to trudge along after me. It gets a bit easier once you're in the last area, where the enemies are stationed ahead of you.

Also, I did this on the original MGS 3. Subsistence's camera makes spotting the enemy far less irritating.

Just keep moving forward. Have loads of Calorie Mates or Noodles on you to shut her up and you're golden. And if you're going No Alerts, practice pistol shooting from afar.

Also holding up The End is a great idea for an achievement so I'm glad they implemented it in the HD versions.
