Local zoo wanted some new signs and props for their Halloween event. I had to make them.
Sounded like a great Project. How many volunteers did you have?
Let's see–between all three days and not counting family, I'd venture somewhere in the realm of 20 or so. But our troop is huge.
Refurbish and repaint the elementary school's workroom, over here. We had a large group to work with—perhaps a dozen Scouts and about that many adults.
Charlie Stross's cheerful, optimistic predictions for 2017, part one of three.Didn't make it that far - but I did manage to help in two Eagle projects way back in the day. The one that I remember most was redoing a bunch of cattle fencing for some farmer way out in the middle of nowhere. The scoutmasters dug the postholes, marked offf stuff and used the power tools to clear brush; we had to drive the posts in and run the fencing material to the posts.
That was a good project. Foil dinners were a veritable feast after all day of that kind of work...
I lost interest in Scouting when I was 14 and walked away from it. Couldn't swim, so stayed a Tenderfoot for, like, forever.
Happiness is zero-gee with a sinus cold.will be eagle by december!
Go play Kentucky Route Zero. Now.Let's see.....
Mine was actually was a two-parter project.
The main part was building a 200-Ft Boardwalk over a protected marsh. This way Classes and study groups can now be in the marsh without harming the Eco System. I Had about 85 volunteers over two work days.
The second part was organizing volunteers to catch food for newly hatched endangered Prarie Chicks. This meant sweeping the Prarie with nets for bugs and insects. Got about 30 people to help with that over 6 days.
Yet another Eagle Scout.
Who watches the watchmen?Interesting thing about my project–a friend and I were the first two scouts in our troop to have a project in several years. My friend got his project done first, but I actually got to Eagle first because he procrastinated on his follow-up paperwork so much that I actually managed to sneak in ahead of him.
I finished up my Eagle project the summer right after I turned 17, but didn't get the paperwork done until around Christmas that year.
My project was a book drive, collected ~2000 paperback books, which I then spent every weekend for two months distributing outside a food bank that was a block away from two different homeless shelters. I basically had one volunteer with me each weekend, never the same one twice. At the end, the ~150 books* I had left I brought to a used book store.
Now my oldest is working on his Bear stuff for Cub Scouts, and my youngest unfortunately can't start Tigers for another year thanks to the age cut-off for school.
That’s the epitome of privilege right there, not considering armed nazis a threat to your life. - SilaswMine was rebuilding a handicap access ramp for a church, installing a handicappd parking spot + sign, and rebuilding their steps on the other side. Then stripping, sanding, and repainting it. Other scouts in our troop did things like rebuild trails, replant a selective logging area, etc
Who watches the watchmen?I'm here. I actually got it at around 16.
"Only now, after being besieged by a flock of talking ponies, did he really understand what he'd lost. "My eagle scout project is adding a playground and paved are to a house owned by a fostercare orginization. As I said, I will be done by september
Go play Kentucky Route Zero. Now.Awestriker: When did you start scouting?
Jimmy: Good luck with your project.

Who watches the watchmen?I didn't start until 11/12 or so; no Cub Scouting or the like for me.
I've already spent portions of two summers as a counselor-in-training on Catalina Island; I've never had the time so far to dedicate a full summer as a counselor.
Charlie Stross's cheerful, optimistic predictions for 2017, part one of three.I did the one month thing one year and worked mostly at the rifle range and archery range.
I worked next year as a full staff member on the Commissioner staff. I helped prep camp sites and teach courses for the trail to Eagle. Ie we got a lot of basic requirements for the early ranks done so they could focus on the Merit badges and leadership portions later.
Who watches the watchmen?I started Boy Scouts at 12, but I know I was also a Cub Scout before then.
"Only now, after being besieged by a flock of talking ponies, did he really understand what he'd lost. "
I'm one. Anyone else?
