Well, apparently the "beauty gas" thing is a case of "Blind Idiot" Translation.

Fiat iustitia, et pereat mundus.Indeed. There's several other fanservice ladies that have a far better head on their shoulders like Litchi, Millia, even Kitana. They just make Mai look bad.
I'm quite confident in my shitposting you knowOn another note, I admit that I am only familiar with the KOF incarnation of Mai. How different is the Fatal Fury version?
Fiat iustitia, et pereat mundus. She does look pretty bad next to them, skimpier outfit only makes it worse.
Well, it sure doesn't help in any way. I must admit I'm not too familiar with her FF incarnation either except that she's not played as being nearly as dumb.

Hell in FF 2 and Special I got the feeling that she was actually more haughty and a tough feminist.
I'm quite confident in my shitposting you knowReally? Elaborate, please. Or better yet, if anyone has video links to relevant cutscenes from the game, that would be much appreciated.
Fiat iustitia, et pereat mundus. Most of her winquotes are of the tough "Don't take me lightly just because I'm a girl, punk" type. Well, as far as I can gather from early SN Kglish.
I'm quite confident in my shitposting you knowI wouldn't necessarily say that the degradation of Mai's character is a shame as it is a product of circumstance.
Ignoring the paper-thin story of fighting games and the roster generally being vessels for their specific playstyle more than anything else, we have to remember that King of Fighters started out as a crossover of Art of Fighting and Fatal Fury (and Ikari Warriors I guess). It kinda makes sense for her to act like she does because she's technically a guest character. In the beginning at least, she was put there to advertise Fatal Fury.
And then KOF got bigger than both of their home series and eventually spun off into it's own, separate canon, so pretty much every character that didn't debut in KOF is kinda stuck in this endless loop, where they can't really develop (or even add certain characters) because "what if a new AOF/FF game comes out?"
Or maybe I'm just full of shit. I'onno.

Don't ask what's wrong with me, because I don't know either. That's why we'll never see Wild Ambition Ryo ro Buriki One Ryo in a KOF game save Maximum Impact
goddamit
I'm quite confident in my shitposting you knowIt seemed they were trying in 2003. Terry in his Mot W outfit, Gato and others showing up, leaving out some of the elder characters; hell Mai wasn't in Arcade XI (though of course that wouldn't help in developing her).
Then XII comes along and everything goes back to the way it was more or less.

They kept Geese alive in the mainline KOF games too (he's in 96 for a reason)
I'm quite confident in my shitposting you knowYeah, though his role is horribly underdeveloped even compared to the rest of the FF cast.
I mean his only appearances since then were either as a passing mention or in console exclusives.
Exactly. I find it hilarious that people still debate if he's alive or not in the main KOF games when:
- He appears in the FF team's 94 and 95 endings
- He's playable in 96 an Krauser and Mr. Big treat him as if he is alive
- He's alive in Billy's 97 ending
- He's mentioned in an alive context in 2003
If that's dead I'd hate to see what they consider alive to be.
I'm quite confident in my shitposting you know'Alive' would be being a main, playable character in every Ko F game, rather than just making 1 canon appearance in one of them and then either making a cameo or a non-canonical playable appearance in some of the others.
...Either that, or prancing around like an elf of spring. Your choice.
Doctor Who — Long Way Around: https://www.fanfiction.net/s/13536044/1/Doctor-Who-Long-Way-AroundPutting it that way a lot of chars would be dead.
He also doesn't fade away as a striker in 2000 unlike the Orochi Team, Mature, and Vice, and even those two got revived in some odd way.
He is indeed dead in the Maximum Impact canon (which by now we know is separate from KOF and is probably actually set in the Fatal Fury verse) since he appears as Nightmare Geese (albeit nerfed) and still has the foot aura and his prologue bio is literally just a Billy Kane piece.
I'm quite confident in my shitposting you knowSo, I pretty much fell off KOF since after the NESTS arc. But I've had XIII for awhile now, but just barely completed the story for lack of interest.
HOLY FUCK. Ash.... this game punche's you in the fucking feels. I wasn't ready.
Louder than God's revolver and twice as shiny.Mature and Vice were still dead at the time. Even in XIII, they're still dead. It would be better to dub the two solid ghosts during their time in XIII. They even have a ghostly color as color 10.

Lampshade Hanging: It's a lifestyle. It was probably the former done by the latter if that makes sense
We got Tung's "Your fists of evil are about to meet my steel wall of niceness" out of it
I'm quite confident in my shitposting you knowWhile we're on the subject of Fatal Fury, I just watched the first OVA for the first time last night. It was... okay. Granted, it was no Shakespeare or anything, but it didn't have to be. It was basically a 70's&80's B-movie, and for that, it wasn't that bad. The best thing about it was Terry, who proves that he, like others of his SNK brethen, could actually work in other mediums if given the chance, and he got it. He's a cool, laid-back, likeable guy with a big heart, but still a badass. The other characters didn't get quite the same level of development, but hey, it was still early in SNK's career, and on top of that, there's a still another OVA and a feature film to help flesh some of these guys out. And of course, Geese was awesome as always, although I'm not sure how I feel about him being able to fire off a frickin' beam of energy. On the one hand, it's FREAKING AWESOME! ...But on the other, he's never really done anything like that in the games. Then again, they had Terry up and steal one of Teng Rue's supermoves, so I guess fair is fair.
So, I liked it. While I wouldn't say it's truly good, it's still cheesy enough that it becomes kind of enjoyable, though I wouldn't say it's so bad and/or cheesy that it outright transcends it's badness/cheesiness and becomes good.
And now for Krauser. Yayz!

I'm quite confident in my shitposting you knowlol
I need to get around to the OV As. What was with Terry's lovers dying in those movies?
Just finished the second OVA and, like with the games, it's an improvement over the original in every way. Terry's still as good as ever, but the other characters get more fleshed out as well, and Krauser is a Grade-A Bad Ass of the highest order. But more importantly, it takes the cheese and narm of the original, and amps it up just enough to be... I'm not sure if it's So Bad, It's Good, because I wouldn't call it bad, but it's definitely got a ton of Narm Charm. It's just plain fun. (And Terry becoming a wasted drunk practically overnight was just hilarious.)
But we're not done yet. Next up is the final part of what I guess wound up being a trilogy; the Motion Picture. Not exactly sure what I'll make of this one, as it used an original plot instead of adapting anything from the games, but I'm sure it'll still be a lot of fun.

Yeah Mai being an airhead ruins her as a character by quite a bit, sad really. While I don't dislike her, she'd be much more tolerable if she acted like she knew what she was doing.
I would say that her being dumb is some kind of stealth tactic, but there are scenes that suggest it isn't (beauty gas, yeah not quite).
