A single unified LGBTQ+ conversation

For most "religious" folks, religion isn't about bettering themselves and the world, it's about power. This makes things very difficult for actually religious folks who just want to practice their religion in peace, without hurting their neighbors, or getting blamed for the horrible shit that other religious folks do.

He responded with four paragraphs where he compared homosexuality to murder and adultery and tried to convince me to just "admit it's a sin."

People like that guy keep forgetting the part where you shouldn't judge others. He's just picking and choosing from the bible to back up his own bigotry (which btw is a sin).

ive seen some complain or act all passive-aggressive whenever you bring up the "not judge others" thing. ive seen a few of my conservative friends (whom i rarely, if ever, talk to) on facebook share a post that said "do you wanna know what grinds my gears? when the only thing people know from the bible is 'not to judge others.'" it honestly pisses me off to no end. and on the other hand, you also have.... certain gsrm people who cant help but dislike or feel bias towards christians, straight and otherwise (though i can understand why if they happen to have a damn good reason to.)

I find the full quote (Matthew 7:1-3) to be much more useful.

Bah homosexuality isn't even called a sin in the New Testament, at least not as far as my bible says. It reads "abusers of themselves with mankind", I choose to take the key word there to be "abusers" and read it as a condemnation of the unequal power dynamic teacher-student abusive relationships that were often common in the classical period.

Beyond the list examples there's just the one where giving in to sin means that the people of the city broke from their sexual orientations and just started sleeping with everyone they could, but that's not about homosexuality, it's about over indulgence of sin causing people to break from their orientations. The gay people in the town presumably also broke from their orientiston and the bi people in town will have broken from whatever standards or preferences they'd normally apply.

Over the years, I've discovered a constant. No matter how much I analyze and intellectualize their scriptures, fundamentalist types will always refuse to believe me. They'll tell me that I'm wrong, and they'll tell me that there's only one way to interpret their scriptures. This is in spite of many scholars and historians saying otherwise. If someone has a deeply-held belief, it almost becomes a part of that person. Any divergent viewpoint isn't seen as an attempt at education; it's seen as a personal attack. The same can be said of most internet arguments. People don't like to be told that they're wrong. Most people aren't interested in debate; they're only interested in carrying on with what they know. Any alternative is seen as an imposition of a new reality, and people don't know how to deal with that.

Don't forget the cherrypicking they love to do to win arguments.

Half the time fundies only bring up the Old Testament. They say that they're Christians, but they don't give a shit about Jesus' teachings.

They keep bringing up Leviticus even though the coming of Jesus made it so the rules in Leviticus were no longer followed by Christians. By citing Leviticus as religious law, you're saying that the coming of the Messiah never happened and therefore you are not a Christian, by the most basic definition

And to note that Leviticus 18:22 calls it 'an abomination', except what it actually says is "Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination." - which really just sounds like 'Look, don't do it like that'.

But that's the pedantic argument.

There is also the issue of Romans 1:26-27, except what exactly it means there requires some cultural background, and it's suspected simply to refer to a Roman practice involving anal sex - but that is a very complicated thing in itself.

Also, 'abomination' as translated in the King James Version is used for four different words - shiqquwts, sheqets and shâqats as well as the rather different to'ba.

So, there is the massive issue of what it means itself.
