My thoughts: Mr. Gingrich's less than ideal social conservatism is a good thing, but it manifested as hypocrisy. He's certainly far more likely to get my vote than Mr. Trump or Ms. Palin, but Obama's got that locked down more or less. My main complaint...

...is that he launched this via Youtube. Now, I like that Youtube is gaining in legitamacy, but it strikes me as being a little odd to make a main bid through posting a video there.

And yes, this could go in OTC, but it doesn't have to. Besides, as a right-winger, shouldn't he be on the right side of the forum?

Amusingly enough I haven't done much research on him despite being a Republican. I do have a couple of his fictional works though.

You know, I think Obama has just been relegated to a one-term Presidency.

Gingrich is an ideas guy, he leads. He's not the ideal person in terms of moral fiber, but then again neither was Clinton, or Bush 43 or Obama.

Besides Gingrich leading the House after 1994 is largely the reason why the Clinton-era budget had yearly surpluses by curbing the welfare state through reforms. (Which is in stark contrast to the trillions of deficits under Obama alone.) Meaning he has ideas on what to cut that won't actually do shit like compromise our defense or our economy.

I'll have to learn more about him, this could get interesting.

I am not sure what this means for Gingrich, but I think it is pretty interesting that besides President George W. Bush *

, all of the Republicans who won the nomination in open contests (i.e. ones without a sitting Republican president) since at least 1968, had run in a presidential primary before.

If that trend continues, I suppose that means that Govs. Romney and Huckabee have the best shot at getting the nomination. Still, what I just said may be basically worthless if this year is different. Given how things look now, I am not confident that either of those candidates will eventually win the Republican nomination. I honestly am not sure what the chances are that any of them will be the eventual nominee, actually.

I admit that I am not expert on politics or primaries so of course I could be wrong.

Hungry Joe: Hang on, what's this about Obama's moral fiber?

I can't speak for anyone else, but between the broken promises regarding Gitmo and the ongoing prosecution against Wikileaks and other whistleblowers...I'm not totally happy with Obama's "moral fiber", but I can't imagine that Gingrinch would be any better in those areas.

Aside from my personal tastes, I can't see this working out well for him. He's been out of the game, his name's been dragged through the mud, and based on the way he announced his candidacy (and the substitute for an exploratory committee) he seems to be trying to beat Obama at his own game without understanding why that works for him. I can't see Gingrich matching him for appeal and image management even if Obama didn't have the huge advantage of taking down bin Laden. The only way to negate that would be if Obama gets embroiled in some massive scandal, but Gingrich still wouldn't be the best choice in that scenario.

Granted, it's a much better prospect than Donald Trump.

Bleh, the only Republican who might be running that I'd vote for is Fred Karger, because I support his stance on certain social issues (real life example of Gay Conservative) and he owns a kickin' cowboy hat, which is the best reason to vote for someone, it really is.

Romney

Blech.

Donald Trump getting the nomination would probably signal a major shift in politics, one I could see possibly being for the better in the long run, but that I'd rather not have to live through.

As for his moral fiber, I'd agree with you, Haven, that he backed off on promises, but he's a politician, and the Wikileaks stuff is kind of a gray area. But yeah, I can see why that would make you lose a considerable amount of faith in the man.

My problem with Gingrich is that he's among the few Republican candidates who's actually opened his mouth on subjects I have an opinion on. I can't say anything for or against the people who just want to make economic changes, since I don't know anything about economics, but even I know enough to question some of his foreign policy remarks.

A conservative Baptist friend on another site has said he'll write in a vote for Osama Bin Laden's corpse before he votes for Gingrich. Ozombie Bin laden also wins the vote over Trump in his opinion. *

Gingrich is such an awful name. Like some villain from a kid's cartoon. If I was American, I wouldn't want a Saturday-morning villain as president.
