"Examples of Other"??? Yeah, the subsections are lame.
Given that it was softsplit, it would be better to leave the games in a pile unless it gets larger. Then again, I'm not a fan of soft splitting example sections.
Fight smart, not fair.I'm kind of curious why no one offered any feedback on this when I was seeking it here in TRS and in YKTTW while example farming when we fixed this trope.

Waiting on a TRS slot? Finishing off one of these cleaning efforts will usually open one up.Huh? I remember it being in for a Rename, but I don't remember it being patched.
Fight smart, not fair.We renamed it and voted to expand it. I wrote the trope description, and ran it through YKTTW. You even commented on it while it was there. The whole process took over a month, during which it was nearly impossible to get feedback on the action. And now, here it is right back in the TRS.
Waiting on a TRS slot? Finishing off one of these cleaning efforts will usually open one up.I will admit to not visiting YKTTW very often. Technically, we could handle this on the Discussion page, we're not trying to redefine or rename, which are the harder parts, the OP just doesn't think the way it's organized is good. I agree, but I've developed a prejudice against soft splits where it's a checklist.
Fight smart, not fair.I think I agree with removing the folders, there's so few examples in a given section that the folders end up cluttering things, which is the opposite of the reason you'd use folders.
We can make the folders for the soft split only. It will feel more organized and less annoying to read.
So, consensus to remove folders?
I say merge the folders, and repetitive examples. Splitting by genre alone works fine.
I'm on the internet. My arguments are invalid. If there are no objections, I will merge all the folders together tomorrow into the standards instead of how it is currently divided.
Am I the only one that thinks "hitting the target" and "stealth bypass" are basically the same thing? From the former: "includes hitting an "invisible" target that can't normally be targeted at all". From the latter: "target cannot be normally hit because they are under cover or out of line of sight". Sounds the same to me.
Really from Jupiter, but not an alien."stealth bypass" as described on the page is about hitting targets that "are under cover or out of line of sight." So no, it's not the same, but the section has a really inappropriate name.
My point is that "using splash damage to hit things that are hard to hit directly" sounds like one thing, regardless if they're hard to hit because they just have high evasion or they cannot be targeted at all for some reason (stealth, cover, line of sight, etc).
Really from Jupiter, but not an alien.Well, that objection has nothing to do with whether or not to merge the folders, so I'm going to go ahead and do that part now.
I think they're functionally the same, but they're different mechanics (that do the same thing). One of the other reasons of stealth is if the game allows dumb targeting or hard smart targeting, if it allows dumb targeting, I can just shot in the general direction of and hit them with splash. If it only allows hard smart targeting, I'll have to send a suicide scout or get a detector unit in range.

Fight smart, not fair.I think no matter what the actual categories are, there's going to be some level of overlap or something excluded. The current categories, for instance, don't mention the Good Bad Bugs wherein splash damage ignores otherwise impenetrable barriers and/or covers a cylinder of infinite height (yes, I played Everquest 1). In any event, since the categories are really only mentioned in the description, they're easier to fix than the messy examples.

The folders look OK to me; did they get fixed already and if so, is there anything more that needs doing?
I went and fixed them, yeah. I guess I forgot to mention that I had done so.
When looking at the article for Splash Damage Abuse, it becomes clear that all examples are divided into five different categories of different ways that Splash Damage can be abused. However, it appears that many works which feature splash damage typically feature two or more styles of abusing it, meaning that the page ends up becoming jumbled with repetition.
From looking at the article, there are 27 folders, none of which have more than 4 examples. Would it be unreasonable to ask for the different subsections to be merged so that there's only one folder for Real-Time Strategy and other genres instead of 5?
