Is there / should there be a male counterpart to Woman Scorned? It came up in the 'Always Female' thread that it's ambiguous. Would a rare male example who is played and portrayed in the same fashion as a Woman Scorned go onto that page, or should it have its own separate page?

There are definitely different tropes that apply to a rejected male and how they react. But this opens the question of whether a story where Woman Scorned tropes are applied to a male should be listed on that page or not...

Basically, the questions are:

1. Should Woman Scorned be defined axiomatically as a female-only trope, with no male examples allowed period under any circumstances?

And, related:

2. Should there be a separate trope for males? (And if there already are tropes that cover this ground, which should be linked to from Woman Scorned?)

I think I saw three male examples on there at one point, most male examples usually end up under the "If I Can't Have You" trope.

If it's from a Genderflipped fanfic I say leave them there, not enough Straight male examples.

I don't recall a lot of male examples offhand, but "rejected suitor seeks revenge on the woman who rejected him" is not uncommon. It is handled differently, though — most male characters will go after the guy who 'took her away from him' where most 'woman scorned' scenarios have her going after 'the guy who rejected her' — so they both go after the male involved, but the male victim is playing a different role in the scorning/rejection, where a straight gender-flip would have the scorned man taking revenge on the woman who scorned him.

Covered by Crazy Jealous Guy and If I Can't Have You…. The concept of the Woman Scorned is as old as storytelling itself (see The Epic Of Gilgamesh example); why male characters who exhibit similar emotions, sentiments, and behavior weren't historically considered so significant is a mystery, but there it is.

It's because Most Writers Are Male and men never do those things those crazy womenfolk are always doing. At least originally.

Eventually, it came to be that women were seen as normally domicile, so when they went all-out against a man who wronged them it surprised anyone who wasn't aware of the trope. Men treated women as disposable and were surprised their women weren't at least a little understanding of that. Because they were in charge and used to it, they also didn't think twice about the fact that cheating wives could get burned at the stake. I'm pretty sure that's a fury like a woman scorned.
