Hey, cats and kittens! Time for another round of Guess That Trope!

The title: Reef Blower

The definition: comedy trope where extremely minor wrongdoing has immediate, and horrible, consequences.

Could you tell what it was supposed to be? I sure couldn't.

As for usage, it's got 12 wicks and 32 inbounds. Only two of its wicks are actually work pages. Of those, one is the trope namer and the other doesn't actually have a separate entry for this trope. This is actually a really old page (Wayback Machine gives October '07 at the earliest) so I think it's had its chance.

So. Any ideas for a new name?

Hilariously Disproportionate Retribution?

I reject your requirement for a witty statement or fanboyish squealing in my signature.

Sounds like an exaggerated form of Disproportionate Retribution. I don't think it has any value.

Wow, that name makes no sense. I mean, I know sound Captain Obvious - like here, but that name reaaaally makes no sense.

[up]I'm inclined to agree. It's Disproportionate Retribution but up to eleven.

[up][up][up], [up][up]: See, I don't see it as quite the same. Disproportionate Retribution implies someone intentionally doing something horrible back to them. The way I read this trope, it could be accidental. It's more akin to karma than retribution.

It can be accidental. The trope namer is an episode of Spongebob Squarepants where Squidward kicks a shell into Spongebob's yard rather than clean it up properly. Spongebob, unaware of anything except that there's a shell in his yard, inadvertently causes more and more problems for Squidward, until finally his yard is completely ruined. It'd fall more under the Karmic tropes than Disproportionate Retribution, unless Disproportionate Retribution can also be accidental.

Bump. This trope is as vague as always. It's been 3 months since this thread started, and the trope has only picked up a few inbounds. It's definitely not thriving.

Apparently, this is an exaggerated and Played for Laughs form of Can't Get Away With Nuthin'. The latter's description has this paragraph:

"If this is intentionally comedic and overblown, it's a Reef Blower. If the disaster that comes from risky behavior is implausible rather than merely happening quicker than you might expect, it's a Space Whale Aesop."

It's actually increased by no inbounds whatsoever, only +2 wikilinks, so yeah, not thriving.

Adding to the name suggestions, maybe something like Karma Avalanche? Kind of conveys the idea of the universe punishing one little bad thing (like a cough in the mountains) with a ridiculous amount of trouble.

(Edit: Well, I don't know if avalanches actually work that way, but that's how it always happens in cartoons.)

There is now a page action crowner for this trope here. Feel free to add more options as you so choose.

Dont What Do You Meant Its Not Heinous and Cant Get Away With Nothing cover this?

I'm on the internet. My arguments are invalid.

Despite the fact that neither of those are links:

No. What Do You Mean It's Not Heinous? is about a character an/or a work treating a Poke the Poodle situation like an actual crime.

Can't Get Away with Nuthin' is about getting caught doing the smallest thing.

This is about Poking the Poodle, and karma itself decides to treat it as if you Kidnapped the President's daughter or something like that.

[up] If so, would we need to slightly expand the definition of Disproportionate Retribution and/or All Crimes Are Equal to include karma, if the crowner votes settle on that option?

(Edit: ...Or would that be forcing trope decay onto one or both of them? Hmm.)

I think it would be forcing trope decay into all of them. This trope is fairly specific, and I'd hate to see it cut because of a horrible name.

I move that we lock the crowner and pick a new name.

I'd prefer a cut, but I'm okay with it given the crowner.
