[up][up][up] Eh, I wouldn't find problem with dentist on its own, in general case. Not all character traits gotta be meaningful and in service to plot and foreshadowing. Just have some unrelated penchants or quirks or preferences.

In this case the preference would be "likes to rape little girls specifically in the mouth" but you gotta do what you gotta do when grimderping it up.

Ahh, hella pagetopper too.

that seems like the kind of thing only a little kid would be afraid of

Dunno about that, ever since I got my wisdom teeth removed I've held the opinion that dentists are scary as fuck. I was seriously uncomfortable every time I was in there, even if I was only there for a quick checkup. tongue

My uncle is in his 50's and he has never gone willingly to the dentist. He's so terrified of them. Same with the doctor, which is ironic since his father (aka my grandfather) is a doctor.

From the respective perspectives of a human(oid) scientist on the one hand and a non-humanoid scientist on the other hand, would it make sense to classify individuals of a species of simultaneously hermaphroditic humanoids into "male" and "female" based on the observed fact that each of the designated sexes not only looks more similar to their counterparts in non-hermaphroditic species, but their gonads produce much less of the "opposite sex" gametes than the other sex does?

[up]If they have persistent physiological differences then yes, it could make sense to have classification based on "primary" sex. However, culture of the aliens themselves plays a role - in here, you can define however you want whether they have such distinction and to what degree.

For example, they could consider the reduced production of the "secondaries" to be highly rude to mention, and consider themselves one gender species, with details of physicality being relevant only in medical records, with such classification being not quite equal to sex&gender classification of humans, thus making such adjustment a world-building element.

And even if they consider themselves one-gender, they could still have concept of separate sexes based on other life on their planet, unless everything is hermaphroditic over there. Could play into some Fantastic Racism - considering other species weird for having separate genders, and/or getting offended when other species apply strict gender separation onto them.

That's true. It's food for thought, at least.

New topic: I'm trying to come up with a plausible Theme Naming scheme for military vehicles of a hypothetical United Europe.

The current scheme I came up is as follows:

  • Cars and other light armored vehicles would be given Italian names, referring to how Italy is home to some of the world's most renowned car manufacturers, such as Maserati, Ferarri and Lamborghini.
  • Tanks and other heavy armored vehicles would be given German names, referring to Germany's fame/infamy for Tank Goodness during WW 2 (and possibly even today, if the Leopard 2's entries on the aforementioned trope is anything to go by).
  • Artillery platforms, be they shell-firing guns or rocket/missile launchers, would be given French names, owing to Napoleon Bonaparte having effectively pioneered the widespread use of massed artillery in warfare.
  • Aircraft would be given English names, partly as a nod to the Royal Air Force's valiant defense of the British Isles during WW2 against Nazi Germany's Luftwaffe, and partly because this United Europe's roster of military aircraft are more or less derived in one way or the other from both the Eurofighter Typhoon, Eurocopter Tiger, and/or the UK-made Harrier Jump Jet.

What do you think?

[up] Nice concepts. :)

  • You can try the VN 84 Rospo amphibous car (Indicating an Amphibian vehicle due to Rospo meaning Toad.)
  • There's also the Meisterjäger 11 Tank (Meaning Master Hunter)
  • For Artillery, try the Å’il de lynx 300MM (In reference to Eagle Eye, and the fact this self-propelled artillery is capable of firing from long distances.)
  • And for Aircraft, try the Interceptor Air Maiden Excalibur (In reference to...you know.)

Your thoughts?

So I'm assuming all the tanks are overengineered pieces of crap that break constantly and can't fight toe to toe with their cheaper and more reliable enemy vehicles of a lower weight class?

Oh really when?

No, United Europe's tanks are Tank Goodness done right. And the naming scheme doesn't imply that the country in question is the only one to make that gear; like the Eurofighter project, practically everything is a multinational effort.

Given Brexit, I have a feeling that any United Europe would exclude the UK, which means English would be less prevalent.

Also, no love for naval vessels? And how far from 20 Minutes into the Future is this United Europe? Is there a Space Navy? (I recommend Spanish names for spacecraft, referring to the early Spanish exploration of the Americas.)

Alternate History is at work here.

Also, no love for naval vessels?
They basically use the same methodology as real-life navies do: A ship belongs to a class, and has its own individual name too. The pool of names is of course much bigger, given the supranational nature of the United European navy; that being said, I suppose it wouldn't be implausible for them to more often than not pick names of famous figures of the respective maritime histories of the UK, the Netherlands, France and Spain (the dominant maritime powers of Europe during the Age of Discovery) for some of the more important vessels (e.g. supercarriers and ballistic missile submarines).

And how far from 20 Minutes into the Future is this United Europe?
Not too far, as far as I've conceived. No space navy yet. I'm kind of making this for a story inspired by the setting of the Rise of the Reds mod.

In a superhero setting, what would be a feasible pretense for a high school principal to coerce the registered metahumans in his school to form a team? I'm trying to come up with ideas for a series like Teen Titans but where the kids actually go to school, but can't thick of a single reason why they should come together in that setting. Something with a cult? No, cults don't typically set up their headquarters in high schools. Alien infiltration? Too Animorphs. I've got nothing.

Perhaps there's an administrative reason he'd want to get a team together. Maybe the city has an incentive program to schools who contribute to the city's safety. Or maybe they give the schools better coverage on insurance if metahumans cause damage, and schools always benefit from lower rates. Or maybe the best super human team in the county gets a stipend? And the principal, being face of the school, would get written up about in a good way.

I have an interesting question. I'm trying to design a sapient race for my fantasy setting (inspired by manticores and sphinxes) that is equally "at home" walking on all fours or on two legs. However, whenever I try to draw it, it always looks more awkward in one of those poses than the other. Any pointers?

No, no, that was what I was looking at earlier. Chimps walk mostly on all fours, only occasionally rising on their hind legs, and while pangolins do walk on their hind legs they have a very low, horizontal posture while doing it. I'm trying to figure out the logistics of a creature that can switch between a fully upright humanoid stance and a fully quadrupedal stance with equal proficiency at both. Alternatively, I could just make them shapeshifters and call it a day, but that feels lazy.

[up]Does it really make sense for them to be equally comfortable in both? Each posture has advantages and disadvantages for each situation, as well as a necessary muscle and bone configuration to bring it to its maximum effectiveness, which means that when relaxing or calmly walking around they may feel preference for one of them.

Maybe walking and running on fours when they don't mind getting their "hands" dirty, want speed, or are relaxed and thus choose the posture that spends less energy, and standing on two feet for manipulating/carrying objects (including weapons) or when they want to keep their "hands" clean, but never actually moving 'gracefully' as bipeds, and having inferior range of rotation of their upper limbs.

As an even lazier alternative, you could make them centaurs, with fully functioning arms with thumbs, hind legs purely for walking, front legs being something in-between and having more versatility.

Spiral out, keep going.

I don't want to do that. Not because I have anything against that sort of design, but because I think it wouldn't be good for the sort of character I have in mind.

What's the style of martial arts where the practitioner uses their opponent's movement against them? For some reason I have Bruce Lee's "flow like water" quote stuck in my head, but I don't know the context or if it's even related to the style I'm thinking of.
