I have a question the Shadow Archetype, I know not all psychology is Jungian but does every shadow archetype need to be someone's suppressed psyche or 'true self'? Can the Shadow or evil version just be that and not just your repressed desires?

[up]Sorry, no. The shadow archetype refers exclusively to the unconscious mind, either the entire thing or merely the negative parts that get denied, neglected, and buried (i.e. the Id). There's no such thing as an "evil twin" in psychology, no matter whose school of thought you prescribe to.

If a city were to somehow lose a good third or more of its population in less than a few weeks due to illness or natural disaster, would the city ever recover if the infrastructure was unharmed, or would the city simply be abandoned over time as people slowly trickled out and moved elsewhere? Does it make a difference if it's a small city versus a major metropolitan area?

It's hard to imagine a natural disaster killing a third of the population while leaving the infrastructure intact.

It's more of a supernatural disaster if you want to get into the specifics. The disease metaphor might be more appropriate. Something that arrives suddenly and swiftly kills an overwhelmingly large number of people in a short time.

Well, infrastructure doesn't maintain and operate itself. If a third of the population got wiped out, I imagine the systems would wind up understaffed at best, or worse, go into total chaos due to losing some important people.

This "faculty lot" you speak of sounds like a place of great power...

We dont have to imagine it, that actually happened during the Bubonic Plague. London and Paris recovered quite well, in fact they were better off a generation later than they had been before the plague.

It largely depends on the city.

How healthy it was and how it was healthy before the loss of 1/3 of its population would be the biggest factor — Detroit would probably go into a steep decline (although it wouldn't die entirely, because, — hey, deep-water port —- you can't just move those to another place) because it's already weak; but Chicago (deep-water port, commodity rail hub) would rebound, as would New York (same reasons), New Orleans (same reasons, plus Mississippi river commodity port), Galveston (same reasons, plus oil refineries and drilling platform supply hub), and other cities that are healthy.

Las Vegas would probably die, because it exists only as a tourist destination, and that business would dry up and there'd be little reason for new people to move in to replace the dead. The same thing applies to other towns and cities that are heavily tourist/vacation oriented.

Thanks Madraguda, that was actually very helpful smile

So how long would it take for a city like New York or Chicago to bounce back from something like this? Months? Years? How would it affect those still living in the city while it recuperates?

Again, it would depend on a lot of factors that you haven't specified. One big one is "Was there a demographic that was hit particularly hard?" The Black Plague killed roughly a third of the populatioin, but didn't have one demographic that was more affected than others, (The very wealthy stood a slightly better chance of escaping it, because they could leave the cities where it was concentrated because of its vector (rats and fleas) but they weren't safe). But WWI, despite having a much lower casuality rate in percentage of the population (slightly over 1% for the "entente nations" — Britain, France and their allies — and 5% for the Germans and their allies), all but wiped out one particular demographic in Europe: males between 18 and 35, and took longer to recover from because of the resulting drop in births.

In your case, if the disaster particularly targets one economic class or one type of worker, its effect may be more or less severe depending on how vital to the cities health that class or type of worker is.

You'd probably be looking at years for anything close to full recovery.

Let's just assume it killed indiscriminately.

Then recovery would be relatively smooth (emphasis on relatively), since the city wouldn't be missing entire classes of people. They'd need more laborers and more managers and more young men and women to make babies, but they wouldn't need to completely replace any of those groups, which would help them survive longer while they replenish naturally.

Which is proper grammar: To capitalize a rank at all times, or just as part of a name? For example: The captain in "Captain Smith" is capitalized, but when referring to him just by rank, would it be "the captain" or "the Captain"?

Can be tricky. If the Captain of a ship is John Smith, he's "Captain Smith". If he's acting in his capacity as Commander of the ship, he's "the Captain". If he's at a cocktail party and you want to distinguish him from another person, he's "the man by the buffet, no, not the lieutenant, the captain".

[up]This is more of an "up to you" question, methinks.

Is So Ho in the Lower East Side? I have a character visiting Katz's Delicatessen for lunch, and I need to be sure I'm not making a factual error when I say the deli is in So Ho a short walk from 240 Centre Street.

Everyone knows about the serpentine and wise Eastern dragon and the winged and destructive (though not always) Western dragon, but are there dragons from other regions of the world?

... dude, there is a dragon for every culture that has a remote idea of what a lizard even looks like. Dragons are fucking everywhere in human history. You can spit at a history textbook and I guarantee it'll land on a culture in which dragons played a significant part in their mythology.

[up] You obviously did not understand what I was asking. I was asking whether there was a dragon in another broad, large area of the world. Eastern dragons are wingless, serpentine, and wise; Western dragons are winged, muscular, and usually brutish. What I want to know is whether other very large, broad parts of the world (such as the south) have anything closely resembling dragons (and which are NOT gods like Quetzoecatl).

I'm trying to do research for a trans character. He did not bind his chest safely as an adolescent (he started when he was about ten) because he kept trying to convince himself that the pain would go away eventually and now his lungs and ribs are crushed and he has to take great care not to strain himself physically so he sometimes uses a wheelchair. I'm having trouble finding more specific information for the following. Most sources talk more about how not to bind unsafely, not how to take care of yourself if you've already done so.

  • Will it ever be safe for him to bind ever again?
  • Would surgeons flat-out refuse to perform top surgery on him?
  • Would this affect his lifespan?
  • If he wore his binder 24/7 except to take baths, how long would it have taken him to hurt himself this badly? Weeks? Months?

[up][up][up] No, you just said, "dragons are everywhere in history!" You did not tell me what a Northern or Southern dragon was like, and how it compared to the Eastern and Western dragons.

Slasher: No, there really is not a third widely-distributed type if "dragon" comparable to the "Eastern wise benevolent dragon" and the "Western bloodthirsty, malevolent dragon.". There are other types of dragons in some cultures, but they tend to be rather narrowly restricted to the area that that culture had social or political dominance.

How much does localizing an anime or game set studios back? Just curious. Do they lose money in the process?
