Looks like Isabel has to confront her Eightfold/grandpa feelings. *Stocks up on tissues*

Every time I see a condemnation of the side mouth as "not a style" I forget how much I find said style silly, out of sheer spite.
Whether or not it's a good style, aesthetically, or in the development of artistic ability, and howevermuch its origins are rooted in a practice meant to save effort in animation,
It is a style.
I think Paranatural is a good example of the ol' Cheeky Mouth showing up occasionally and not looking utterly freaking ridiculous?
Mostly does better things now. Key word mostly. Writes things, but you'll never find them. Or you can ask.I think the point is that it's not a style in the same way that "bad anatomy" is not a style. It's not done for stylistic reasons, ie as a deliberate artistic choice in order to convey something to the audience (except, perhaps, as a form of Stylistic Suck). It's done because it's easy to draw and cheap to animate. It's certainly a "style" in the sense that it's a signature of certain artists, but you wouldn't consider being Off-Model a "style" in the sense of artistry even though that's also a thing that frequently occurs with some creators' works.
Really from Jupiter, but not an alien.Eh, I think it's painting with too broad a brush to say that it's actually never used for stylistic reasons, and trying to say that something is a bad convention by arguing that it isn't a style at all just seems... dumb, to me?
And while I can't exactly think of a specific example off the top of my head, (that isn't Stylistic Suck) I'm sure there are works where frequent Off-Model is part of the style; probably for, well, surrealism?
I'unno.
It's not like being a legitimate style makes a convention any better or worse.
Mostly does better things now. Key word mostly. Writes things, but you'll never find them. Or you can ask.Cheeky mouth can be a cheat for people that know what they're doing and for those that don't they see it as "well that's how it looks, right? My animes said so"
As someone who does a lot of drawing there will always be temptation to use those shortcuts to make things faster or easier, it's typically just deciding when to. It's not a style, it's a shortcut, a way to make things easier or in certain cases to get a certain look. I can totally understand the usage for some scenes, using a properly formed isn't always going to be the most aesthetically pleasing choice. For other moments like where a character is further in the background, less detail is warranted.
And frankly what he does all the time tends to be so detailed and wacky and extreme that i feel it's alright to let it go if he does something like this on occasion. It's no big deal. I mean when I first read the page I noticed it almost immediately but then promptly ignored it becuase it wasn't ugly and wasn't taking me out of the story or the characters.
The Blog The ArtI know a few episodes of Space Dandy have intentionally been off model- most notably the episode where Dandy ends up on a planet made up entirely of sentient plants.
also screw you druple now i have to read all of lackadaisy
"There's not a girl alive who wouldn't be happy being called cute." ~Tamamo-no-MaeI'm assuming that this was not what Mr. Spender thought she was going to bring up.
I suspect Isabel brought that up specifically because she knew what Spencer was trying to say and didn’t want to talk about it.
What do you think he was trying to bring up?
I was thinking Eightfold at first but the way her hand is placed in the last panel makes me think of her dog issues.
He does start to mention "what happened last night", so it's probably not her dog issues specifically. That said, things that happened last night (in webcomic time) that probably warrant a Serious Talk include: 1) the loss of Eightfold, 2) the fact that Spender totally bailed on Isabel when she was trying to ask his help in explaining the loss of Eightfold to her grandfather, 3) freaky evil dog spirits, 4) Consortium shenanigans, 5) the fact that they're stuck in Mayview until the train regenerates, and 6) freaky shadow spirit.
It was a busy night.

I have a message from another time...I meant more along the lines of "what's the deal with spirits that don't play by the normal rules (respawning, etc) and speak in evil skulls instead of English" than "let's discuss my Freudian fear of dogs in general".
Really from Jupiter, but not an alien.we've heard she "Doesn't like" dogs, and what with the bedroom plastered in save the animals type stuff I imagine it's more a tragic backstory than a legit "fear of dogs"
"Coffee! Coffeecoffeecoffee! Coffee! Not as strong as Meth-amphetamine, but it lets you keep your teeth!"I mean we know what happened with the dogs.
She was attacked by an angry Doberman as a child; her powers were as good as imaginary against it.
Dog pictures are basically a child's idea of exposure therapy, and like most people's idea of exposure therapy it is ineffective.
Despite my screen-name, ranting to you about One Piece is not my top priority. Also, we've seen that having doglike things around fucks her up enough to make her lose that spar with Female Vegeta and generally stop displaying her cheery love of violence. It's still affecting her, no matter how many swollen-eyed-dog posters she puts up.
Man, we know Spender's a fuckup and morally dubious, but it's hard not to like him.
Dopants: He meant what he said and he said what he meant, a Ninety is faithful 100%.I appreciate those top middle panels.
Well, he's an idiot who seems to think he's doing the right thing. And he's funny. So I'm willing to forgive him so far
Sure the show's stupid but it's bright, fun, and you see grown men get punched in the face multiple times an episode. What's not to like?
That's how I'm reading it, too.
